
Florian Robert Rhode Funeral services were conducted Tuesday noon, May 26, for Florian Robert Rhode, 87, 4025 North Shore Drive, Menominee, Mich., at the Anderson-Kell Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Ronald Helgerson officiating. The 20 Year Military Club presentation followed with burial in Glenwood Memorial Gardens. A combined VFW and American Legion service preceded the rites.
Rhode died Friday, May 22, at Bay Area Medical Center. He was born Jan. 7, 1922 in Carney, Mich., to the late Florian (Gladys Foster) Rhode Sr. On Feb. 4, 1961 he married Helen Kidrick-Ballard in Janesville.
In 1942 Rhode joined the U.S. Army serving as a Staff Sgt. in the 2nd Army 466 Medical Battalion in the European Theater of War. He saw extensive war time in England, France, Holland, Germany and Russia. He received the Purple Heart and 5 Bronze Stars for serving in the battles of the Battle of the Bulge, Normandy Invasion, Brest France, Ardenenes Woods and Nancy France.
Following the war, he worked as a crane operator, heavy construction, operating engineers local 139. Following retirement, the couple ran the Army-Navy Surplus Store in Peshtigo and in the 1960s operated a resort in Lake of the Woods, Minn.
He was a member of VFW Post 1887 and American Legion Post 146.
Survivors include his wife; six children Michael (Nancy) Rhode, Park Rapids, Minn.; Susan Ballard, Madison; Roger (Mary) Rhode, Black River Falls; Susan Olson, Cashton; Mark Rhode, Green Bay and Patricia Briar, Peshtigo. Also nine grandchildren and great grandchildren. He is further survived by two sisters, Bernice (John) Simonetti and Betty (Darwin) Waldo and seven brothers Clifford, Alan, Blaine (Gloria), Floyd, Gerald (Hazel), Howard (Rosanne) and Raymond.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, June Sharpley, one son, Paul Rhode, a son-in law Richard Briar, a sister Irene Rhode and two brothers, Herbert and Robert.
