
William James Mercier, Jr. Mass of Christian Burial was held on Monday, June 22, at 10 a.m. at St. Andrew Catholic Church in Nahma, Mi. for William James Mercier, jr., 80, of 9717 EE .25, Rapid River, Mi., St. Jacques area.
Fr. Brian Gerber and Fr. Ben Paris officiated. Burial followed in the church cemetery with military rites conducted by Rapid River American Legion Post #301. He died Monday evening, June 15, at his home, following a lengthy illness with cancer.
He was raised in Nahma, Mi., born there on May 12, 1929 to the late William and Laura (McDonald) Mercier.
He entered the United States Army Air Corps in 1948 and was stationed at Dow A.F.B. in Bangor, Ma., where he met and later married the former Ruth A. Murchison on Aug. 8, 1951. The couple lived in numerous military installations in America and overseas. He moved his family to St. Jacques in 1972, after which he received orders for Vietnam. He retired out of K.I. Sawyer A.F.B. on May 31, 1974. He was a member of the Escanaba D.A.V. and the Rapid River American Legion Post #301.
His children survive. They are Robin (Julie Robinson) Breen of Fayetteville, N.C., Mrs. Paul (Donna) Beauchaine of Marquette, Mi., Michele J. (Ron M.) Larson of Gladstone, Mi. and William Mercier III of St. Jacques, Mi. He is further survived by numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; a brother, Carl (Estelle) Mercier of Marinette and a sister, Helen Pasik of Taylor, Mi.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Margaret A. Jones in 1979; a son, Francis X. Mercier in 1985; his wife, Ruth in 1991; his father, William, sr. in 1997; a brother, John Mercier in 1999 and his mother, Laura in 2001.
