
Ernest R. Sunila Ernest R. “Ernie” Sunila, 94, of Menominee, formerly of Carney, Mi. passed away on Monday, July 13 in Iron Mountain, Mi. following a brief illness.
Born Aug. 17, 1914 to the late Robert and Marie Sunila in Daggett, Mi, he served in the United States Army during World War II from 1942 to 1946, including 1 1/2 years in Italy. He attained the rank of TEC 4.
Following his return from service he married the former Ellen Gustafson on April 5, 1947 in Milwaukee. He worked at Frigo Co. as a cheese maker and maintenance for 30 years, retiring in 1976. He was a charter member of the Mid County VFW Post # 5966 and Carney Nadeau Legion. He enjoyed an occasional trip to the casino, hunting, fishing, camping and his camp east of Carney.
His wife, Ellen survives, along with three daughters, Mrs. Bud (Eunice) Wingo of Ingle Side, Tex. and Mrs. Richard (Janice) King and Mrs. Pat (Bonnie) Charlier, both of Menominee; a son, Wayne (Jean) Sunila of Menominee; 11 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren and a sister, Senia Eliasson of New Berlin.
He was preceded in death by two grandchildren, Kristopher and Catherine; five brothers, Oscar, Eric, Elmer, Donald and Henry and two sisters, Elsie and Martha.
Visitation will be Thursday, July 16 after 2 p.m. at the Anderson Diehm Funeral Home, Stephenson, Mi. with a veterans service at 3:45 p.m. and funeral service at 4 p.m. Burial will be in Carney Evangelical Free Church Cemetery with the 20 Year Club conducting Military Rites. A luncheon will follow at the Carney Legion.
