Marinette County Fair Time At Wausaukee Aug. 27-30 Marinette County Fair Grounds at Wausaukee were bustling with activity early this week in preparation for the official opening of the annual County Fair at 11 .m. Thursday, Aug. 27. Rides open at 1 p.m. Activities run throughout the day and until late at night on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, and conclude Sunday evening, Aug. 30.
In late August each year, Marinette County hosts the memorable 4-day party that features a family friendly environment with plenty of entertainment and a grand variety of food and refreshments. In case of rain there are roofed pavilions and refreshment stands and numerous enclosed barns and display buildings.
The 4-H crowning ceremonies will be held at 5:30 p.m. Thursday. Candidates are Carly Strutz, Lizzy LaCoy, Mia Haberl, Kristin Lepinski and Logan Gruszynski.
General admission price is $5 per day or $15 for all four days. Special prices on rides are offered during wristband nights from 5 to 9 p.m. Thursday and Friday, and during an Early Bird Carnival Special from 1 to 4 p.m. on Friday.
As always, there will be live animal exhibits of all sorts, displays of arts, crafts, photography, and wood carving skills. Farmers, gardeners and hobbyists will offer up the fruits of their labor, literally and figuratively. For those with fun in mind, there will be carnival games and rides, an amazing array of live entertainers, Demolition Derby competition, and horse, farm tractor, lawn mower, truck and kiddie tractor pulls.
Fairgoers can see dairy cows, horses, chickens, rabbits, kittens, puppies and much more. Vendors will offer their wares, several county agencies will offer informational activities and displays.
The Marinette County UW-Extension office in the Courthouse in Marinette will be vacant Aug. 27-30. Staff members will be busy sharing information and answering questions in the Education Tent on the Marinette County Fairgrounds. The Education Tent is co-sponsored by UW-Extension, Marinette County Land & Water Conservation Department and Parks, Forestry and Outdoor Recreation Divisions. This year’s edition of education at the Fair includes “The Underground,” a simulated subsoil adventure for youth and adults.
The Education Tent is located directly across from the fair office and main exhibit building on the fairgrounds’ “Main Street.” It offers visitors the opportunity to relax, learn, and make the most out of their fair experience.
The four program areas of UW-Extension (Agriculture/Horticulture; Family Living/WI Nutrition Education; 4-H/Youth Development; and Community, Natural Resources, & Economic Development) will all have information, activities, and displays.
A main item of interest for youth and families to view will be the reptiles, amphibians, and arachnid display. These live samples will showcase the variety of these species which can be found in Marinette County.
In the grand tradition of fair booths, youth will be able to choose from a number of free items, including stickers. Staff will be present in the Tent from noon to 9 p.m. Thursday, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday. Normal UW-Extension hours are 8:30 to 4:30 Monday through Friday, 715-732-7510.
Marinette County Tourism Alliance will have a display in the main exhibit building offering free maps and brochures and a brand new continuously running slide show video of county attractions.

Despite her youth, Charissa is a singer, songwriter, and recording artist. She has already written and recorded half a dozen of her own songs. She also plays the quitar and bongo. She has been performing on stages in Wisconsin, Illinois and Indiana and even Nashville, Tenn. since age seven, and has been lead singer with “Charissa & the Auburn Sky Band” since age 10.
In 2005, she was chosen to shoot an advertising commercial for Country Thunder, USA, and was guest performer at four shows there with the Michael Scott Band on the Jack Daniels stage.
In 2007 Charissa won the largest nationwide country music talent search contest, “The Colgate Country Showdown,” and later that year was announced as Wisconsin State Champion by unanimous judges vote at the Wisconsin State Fair, the first time ever that a child was the winner.
Charissa was featured on the air live in June of 2008 as celerity artist with “The dinner Tour.” Despite her youth, she has shared the stage with numerous country music superstars, including Billy Curington in 2004, Trick Pony and Confederate Railroad in 2005, the Oak Ridge Boys and Danielle Peck in 2007, Joe Diffie in 2008 and Carolina Rain and others in 2009. She opened for Lonestar in 2006 and for Jo Dee Messina in 2007.
Renee Srauss is backup vocalist for the group. Her husband, Rick, who is band manager and sound engineer as well as harmonica player, is Charissa’s brother-in-law.
Other members of the band are Larry Perez, bass guitar; Kevin Schroeder, lead quitar; Tom Sokal, keys and acoustic guitar, and Mykel Alekzanderh on drums. The band practices weekly at the Strauss home in Kenosha.
