Trooper Earns Award For Homicide Capture
A member of the Wisconsin State Patrol, who captured an armed murderer in the killing of three teenagers on July 31, 2008 at a popular swimming site on the Menominee River near the City of Niagara, received a special award Wednesday, Sept. 9, at the State Capitol in Madison.
Trooper Gary V. Czlapinsk, Stevens Point, was among 21 members of the State Patrol who received special awards for saving lives and other exemplary service.
Czlapinski was among a contingent of law enforcement officers responding to find Scott J. Johnson, 38, Kingsford, Mich. who had retreated into the woods near the killings. On Aug. 1, he observed Johnson coming out of the woods carrying a rifle and other items. Czlapinski ordered Johnson to drop the items, which he did. Johnson was then taken into custody without incident.
The State Patrol reported Trooper Czlapinski put his life at risk while apprehending an armed murderer. For his courage and professionalism in performance of his duties, Trooper Czlapinski earned the Meritorious Service Award.
Johnson was sentenced to 295 years in prison on May 21 by Marinette County Circuit Court Judge Tim Duket. He was sentenced on three counts of first degree intentional homicide using a dangerous weapon, six counts of attempted first degree intentional homicide using a dangerous weapon and one count of second degree sexual assault by use of force.
For the three first degree intentional homicide, Johnson received three life sentences without possibility of parole.
