THE CITY REBORN FROM THE ASHES OF AMERICA'S MOST DISASTROUS FOREST FIRE
New Walkway Constructed In Evergreen Park
The Village of Wausaukee and the Wausaukee American Legion Post combined to construct several foot bridges and walking paths at Evergreen Park in Wausaukee. The Legion Post was made aware in July that the Village of Wausaukee Board and the Park and Rec. Committee were planning a Nature Trail in the Park. The Legion Post volunteered to provide labor and some funding for the project. Village Streets and Park Superintendent Daryll Schmidt staked out and marked the trail, and once approved by the State of Wisconsin, the Village Board also allocated funds for the project.
Volunteers from the Legion knew that one or possibly two bridges would be needed to connect the trail over the Wausaukee River, and voted to assist with construction. Materials were purchased from Wausaukee Lumber and work began. The Wausaukee American Legion Women’s Auxiliary also voted to help with funding.
Legion members helping with the Project include Mike Gavigan, Dave Schlies, who also assisted with engineering, Glen Putz and his son Todd. Jeff Townsend, Village President and Kerra Stumbris, seasonal employee for the Village of Wausaukee, also helped.
According to Legion Member, Mike Gavigan, generous donations from the local community allow the project to become a reality.
A formal dedication of the Trail will be held in 2010, when the walkway is complete. Gavison states the scenery and nature of the trail adds to the beauty of the park, and said the Legion is proud to be a part of the project.
