Charles Jay Hawley Funeral services for Charles Jay Hawley, 66, of Watersmeet, Mi., formerly of Green Bay, were held on Friday, Oct. 9 at Calvary Lutheran Church.
Pastor Earl Vorpagel III officiated and burial was at Oakhill Cemetery in Land O’Lakes. Proko-Wall Funeral Home, Green Bay served the family. He died unexpectedly on Sunday, Oct. 4 at Woodruff Hospital.
Born Dec. 27, 1942 to the late Charles Allan and Marguerite Kathryn (Holling) Hawley, he was a 1960 graduate of Crivitz High School.
He joined the Coast Guard in 1961 and served until 1965. During this time he was a member of the Coast Guard Color Honor Guard during President Kennedy’s presidency and received many honors for their color guard performances.
On Jan. 10, 1966 he joined the Green Bay Police Department and was a member of the Snowmobile Patrol and Police Honor Guard. In 1985 he received the Distinguished Service Award for helping save the life of a drowning victim in the East River. He also handled the school crossing guards and wrote various grants. He retired at the rank of Captain on Dec. 31, 1995. A member of the Monday Night Musky League in Eagle River, he earned many trophies for his fishing talents. He also shot darts and was a member of the Pazaza Club. On Oct. 27, 1995 he married Sherry (Krueger) Gierczak in Watersmeet, Mi. and they made their home there after his retirement.
In addition to his wife, Sherry, he is survived by two stepchildren, Kelly (special friend, Andrew DeGrave) Gierczak and Brian Gierczak, both of Green Bay; a daughter, Cheryl Hawley of Neenah; an adopted daughter, Bonnie Hawley of Santa Cruz, Calif.; his mother and father-in-law, Ken and Marilyn Krueger of Green Bay; five brothers, Michael (Marilyn) Hawley of Marinette, Neil (Michiko) Steitzer of San Antonio, Tex., Dave (Marilyn) Steitzer of Rhinelander, Dick Steitzer of Nebraska and Richard Hawley of Michigan; three sisters, Joyce Heart of Marshfield, Jeanne Bufe of Traverse City, Mi. and Beverly Heinrichs of Stevens Point; two brothers-in-law, Kim (Joy) Krueger of Sparta and Michael (Lisa) Krueger of Green Bay; three grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers-in-law, Eugene Heinrichs, Lee Heart and Robert Bufe; a sister-in-law, Sally Steitzer and a granddaughter, Jacquline Kulhanek.
