Co. Library Board Rejects Peshtigo Lease Rental Hike

The Marinette County Consolidated Library Board’s main agenda item for the Thursday, Oct. 16 meeting was “Discuss/Consider 2010 Peshtigo Library Lease contract, action if any.”

The discussion did not take very long. The Peshtigo City Council had voted to raise the monthly lease rental from $650 to $700 per month effective Jan. 1, 2010. Chair Cheryl Maxwell stated it briefly, “Shall we cancel? Not renew the lease and find another location?”

Bob Berndt noted, “Costs are going up all over.” Maxwell also reported the county has cut the library budget by $18,000.

There were no conciliatory comments. Evie Dieck moved to not renew the lease, and Lois Outcelt gave a second. There was no further discussion. The vote was unanimous.

Dieck said the old highway department business office is a possibility. It is owned by Marinette County and is vacant, not used at present. It is in the west end of the main building, fronting on Stephenson Street, and has two floors with a stairway and landing.

Director Jennifer Thiele said some fund transfers are pending but she will present them at the next meeting.

Facilities Director Shawn Baker was on hand to discuss the original front entrance doors that face Hall Avenue, and have had little use since the new addition was finished. He has advised that the old doors expand in the summer making closing difficult and they shrink in the winter allowing cold air to leak in. Maxwell asked if the integrity of the classic doors can be maintained. He offered a few ideas, such as sealing up one of the two doors. “What style do you want?” he asked, and added they will work fine in winter but not in summer, or will work well in summer but not in winter because of expansion and contraction of the wood. Connie Seefeldt said she wants it to be efficient. Dieck then moved “to pursue restoration of the old doors,” and the motion was approved unanimously.

Baker reported that the tuckpointing of the old building starts the next day and the security cameras installations have been approved by the Building and Grounds Committee.
