MARINETTE SLUDGE SPILL–City of Marinette workers clean up 4,000 gallons of sludge (treated human waste) which spilled Tuesday morning, Nov. 3, when a tanker overturned on Hall Ave., U.S 41, and Stephenson Ave. It happened in front of the Marinette County Courthouse and Marinette City Hall. A worker uses a hose to suck up the oily looking sludge before it enters the sewer. Traffic had to be detoured about 4 hours across the Hattie St. Bridge as travel on the Interstate Bridge was also detoured. Quick response had one person put leaves over manhole covers to prevent the sludge from entering the sewage system and going into the Menominee River. The Marinette City Department of Public Works quickly arrived on the scene with a loader and sand. Tanker Carrying Sludge Overturns In Marinette

A tanker carrying 6,000 gallons of treated sludge overturned at the intersection of Hall Ave. (U.S. 41) and Stephenson Ave. in Marinette in front of the Marinette County Courthouse and Marinette City Hall about 11:44 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 2. An estimated 4,000 gallons of treated sludge, bile material or treated human waste, spilled onto the street.

The tanker, owned by Veolia Environmental Services, Baraboo, was coming from the Marinette Wastewater Treatment plan and the sludge was to be spread on a farm field. It was making a left turn from Stephenson Ave. onto Hall Ave. when it overturned landing on its passenger side. A lamp post was struck and pushed into the Veterans Memorial Fountain at the courthouse. The driver suffered minor injuries and was treated at the scene and then transported to Bay Area Medical Center.

Quick response was made by the Marinette City Police, Marinette Fire Department HazMat Response Team and Emergency Rescue Squad as traffic on both lanes of Hall Ave, U.S. 41, had to be rerouted over the Hattie St. bridge. Traffic was unable to cross the Interstate Bridge. Traffic resumed about 3:40 p.m.

Immediate collection of the sludge began to prevent as much as possible from seeping into the sewer system. DNR Conservation Warden Mike Kitt reported he didn’t believe that enoucgh sludge had entered the storm sewer system to cause a problem for the Menominee River.

There were no hazardous chemicals involved and there was not any concern for public health or safety.

The Marinette County Emergency Management also responded and credited John LeFebvre, County Land Information Director, for immediately putting leaves on top of catch basins to stem the flow of sludge until the personnel of Marinette City Department of Public Works and Water Treatment plant arrived with a loader and sand to berm the area. They were able to contain and clean up the sludge.

Also responding were the Marinette County Sheriff Department, Menominee Police and Fire Departments, Marinette County Emergency Management, DNR and City of Marinette Water Treatment personnel.

The first 911 call thought the tanker was carrying fuel oil because the sludge appeared to be a thick oil like substance.

After the fuel leak was mitigated and the tanker was pumped down to a safe level it was uprighted by a wrecker and towed away.

Cause of the accident is under investigation by the Marinette Police Department.
