
John R. Hillen, Sr. John R. (Jack) Hillen, sr., 80, of Kelly Lake died in Minneapolis, Minn. on Saturday, Nov. 21.
Born in Milwaukee on Dec. 9, 1928 to the late Evelyn (Roehl) and Joseph Hillen, he graduated from Marquette University in 1953 with a degree in Business Administration.
On June 13, 1953 he married the former Nancy Knoedler. She preceded him in death on Jan. 18, 2008 after 54 years of marriage. The couple resided at Kelly Lake since 1989. He served in the United States Army from 1954 to 1956. He was released from the Army to attend school and was hired by Travelers Insurance Company in Milwaukee. He worked for the company for 40 years, selling group insurance and managing the Green Bay office until retirement in 1989.
He was a member of St. Matthew Parish serving on the Parish Council and School Board. He and his wife were longtime members of Shorewood Country Club, Green Bay Cotillion Dance Group and Green Bay Square Dance Club.
Seven children survive. They are Mrs. Michael (Julie) Ignasiak of Green Bay, Mrs. Brian (Sara) Boevers of Coon Rapids, Minn., Mrs. John (Amy) Thorson of Wauwatosa, John (Dr. JoAnn Sperl-Hillen) Hillen, jr. of Minnetonka, Minn., Mrs. Sean (Martha) Hennessy of Glen Ellyn, Ill., Mrs. Victor (Clare) Narusis of Woodstock, Ill. and Paul (Karen) Hillen of Plymouth, Minn. He is further survived by 34 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mary Ann Knoedler of Madison and Mrs. Erv (Jean) Pinnow of Milwaukee and a brother-in-law, many nieces and nephews, relatives and friends.
Besides his parents, a brother-in-law, Dr. Bill Knoedler, sr. and a granddaughter, Margaret Mary Bahr, preceded him in death.
Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Wednesday, Nov. 25 at 1 p.m. at St. Francis Xavier Cathedral, Green Bay, concelebrated by Msgr. Roy M. Klister and Rev. Gery G. Meehan, O Praem. Military honors followed and entombment was in Allouez Mausoleum. Schauer & Schumacher Funeral Home, Green Bay assisted the family.
