Pre-Season Favorite Peshtigo Cruises To Opening Victory

Tigers And

Rangers Also

Impressive

The M & O Conference basketball season got underway without any major surprises Tuesday night, as Peshtigo, Gillett, Wausaukee and Coleman pulled out victories over their respective opponents.

The Bulldogs, Tigers and Rangers all dominated their contests, winning by 23, 28 and 24, respectively.

Coleman’s win over Niagara was a bit closer, but they still won by nine over Niagara.

The key match-up of the coming week will likely be on Tuesday when Wausaukee travels to Peshtigo.

That game could very well determine how the rest of the season plays out.

In non-conference action earlier in the week, Wausaukee picked up a win while St. Thomas Aquinas lacked scoring in a loss to Sevastopol.

Bulldogs Come Out

Firing Against Crivitz

Sarah Dobbin scored all 10 of her points in the first 3:13 of Tuesday night’s conference-opening win over Crivitz, catapulting the Bulldogs into comfortability in a 58-35 victory.

Dobbin hit three of four free throws, banked in a layup after a steal, hit a mid-range jumper and buried a three, lifting the Bulldogs to a 10-4 advantage against an inconsistent Crivitz squad.

Taylor Huss would add five points later in the quarter on her way to a dozen points, while Alyssa Pyscher took over late as the Bulldogs pulled away.

Pyscher finished with a game-high 18 points in the contest.

The Bulldogs went on an 8-2 run midway through the second quarter to take a 15-point lead, and never looked back.

Crivitz was outscored 26-10 in the second half.

Danielle Suchon had 14 points to lead the Wolverines.

Coleman Ices

Win At The Line

After just 10 points in the first half, the Coleman Cougars erased a six-point halftime deficit by scoring 14 points in the third quarter, and held on to secure a 35-26 win over Niagara in the M & O Conference opener for both teams.

“Their man pressure caused early turnovers and led to good scoring chances,” recalled Coleman coach Jeff Bronson. “(We) took care of the ball better in the second half, reducing their wide-open chances.”

“It helped that they had an off night shooting,” Bronson continued. “Niagara will not miss the shots they did tonight.”

Coleman guard Kayla Johnson made all nine of her free throw attempts, including seven in the second half, as the Cougars hit on five of six late to preserve the win.

Johnson finished with a game-high 13 points, despite sitting early with foul trouble.

Miranda Lundin had 11 points, including five in the second quarter as Niagara established an early lead.

Coleman was 11-of-18 from the free throw line, while the Badgers attempted just eight free throws and hit only two of them.

Meg Cagle added eight points for the winning squad, and Gina Gwidt had six.

“Both teams played hard,” Bronson noted. “The defenses for both teams (are) way ahead of the offense.”

The Cougars will have a realistic chance at a hot start as they take on St. Thomas Aquinas Thursday night on the road, before traveling to Crivitz on Tuesday.

Niagara will look to get back on track with a game at Suring Friday night, before hosting Lena on Tuesday.

Balance Keys

Ranger Romp

Brooke Wickman’s 11 points led a balanced Wausaukee effort as the Rangers cruised past St. Thomas Aquinas 44-20 in the conference-opening match-up.

Leading by just three at the half, the Rangers outscored the punchless Cavalettes 27-6 in the last 16 minutes.

Brittany Fifarek added 10 points for the winners, and Megan Arthur had nine and Ashlie Zeutzius chipped in six.

Arthur added eight rebounds and Zeutzius had seven for Wausaukee, but Karlie Francour was tops with 10 rebounds on the night.

The Rangers box-and-one defense held the Cavalettes’ top scoring option (Juliana Molosky) to just four points in the contest.

Keisha Stuart was tops for STAA with six points.

Wausaukee will use the win as a tune-up for a week in which they travel to Crivitz (Thursday) and Peshtigo (Tuesday).

The Cavalettes will search for a victory when they host Coleman Thursday, or when they go to Suring on Tuesday.

Tigers Start Hot,

Rout Suring 41-13

The Gillett Tigers put the clamps on Suring in an M & O Conference opening match-up Tuesday, taking a 26-3 first-half lead on their way to a 41-13 rout.

Alaena Wocking scored 10 of her team-high 12 points in the first half as Gillett assumed control.

Lauren Kasten knocked down three second quarter jumpers on her way to 11 points for Gillett.

Kelsey Hischke and Sam Styczynski each added six points for the Tigers.

Suring didn’t have a scorer with more than two points in the contest.

Gillett will be hosting Lena on Thursday night, while Suring plays host to Niagara on Friday and STAA on Tuesday.

-Non-League Action-

-Friday’s Results-

Cavalettes Lack

Punch In Loss

To Sevastopol

The good? Juliana Molosky had a game-high 18 points.

The bad? The rest of the team had five.

Still in search of a scoring threat aside from the four-year starter Molosky, the St. Thomas Aquinas Cavalettes fell to Sevastopol in a non-conference match-up Friday night, 54-23.

Molosky knocked down three three’s and was 3-for-4 from the charity stripe on her way to a solid night, but Natalie Dombkowski’s four points accounted for all but one of the other points for the Cavalettes, who fell behind 22-13 at the break and were outscored 14-3 in the third quarter.

Jessica DeMeuse scored 13 points to lead Sevastopol.

-Saturday’s Results-

Big First Half Keys

Wausaukee Win

After opening up a slight lead in the first quarter, the Wausaukee Rangers used a 17-4 run to pull away from the Goodman-Pembine Patriots Saturday night, winning the non-conference match-up, 49-30.

Megan Arthur had 15 points and nine rebounds to lead the Ranger win, and Brooke Wickman added nine points, five steals and four assists in the complete performance.

Karlie Francour contributed eight points and eight rebounds for Wausaukee, and Brittany Fifarek and Brooke Arndt combined on 12 points and 12 steals.

Ashley Janczewski led the Patriots with 14 points.
