Bulldogs Bag Third At Brillion Bayer, Drees Pocket Titles;
Coleman, Oconto Falls
Back Up Early Rankings
The Oconto Falls Panthers and Coleman Cougars are the top teams in their respective divisions in the first edition of Wisconsin Wrestling Online’s team rankings, and they showed why over the week.
After blanking Marinette Thursday with a perfect 84-point showing, Oconto Falls finished as a runner-up to Wisconsin Rapids (top-ranked in Division 1) at a power-packed Battle on the Bay tournament Saturday, edging teams like Green Bay Preble/East and Luxemburg-Casco.
Coleman simply dominated a double dual Tuesday night, knocking off Bonduel and Manawa and allowing just 12 collective points.
Peshtigo sent their squad to the Brillion Invitational Saturday and was impressive, getting out of there with two wins (Josh Bayer at 103 pounds and Mack Drees at 112).
-Thursday’s Results-
Crivitz Blasted
By Bonduel
The Crivitz Wolverines ran into a buzzsaw Thursday night in the form of the Bonduel Bears, losing a non-conference dual 54-18.
The Wolverines managed just three wins, one coming on a forfeit, in the defeat.
Kyle Reinke (112 pounds) and heavyweight Joe Rodriquez both won with second period pins.
Reinke took down Derek Liebergen in 3:50 for his win, and Rodriquez beat Ryan Diemel in 3:46.
The other win for Crivitz came from Amanda LaFave, who won by forfeit at 119 pounds.
The Wolverines surrendered seven pins in their 11 losses on the night.
Oconto Grabs Early
Lead, Hangs On To
Knock Off Antigo
The Oconto Blue Devils grabbed the first 18 points of a dual with Antigo and led 24-6 before holding on for a 45-30 non-conference victory.
Blake Bostwick and Trevor Fischer followed Andy Thome’s forfeit win with a pair of first-period pins to put the Blue Devils ahead by 18, and Ben Thome and Casey Telford added decision wins to make it 24-6 nearly halfway through the match.
Antigo was able to get right back in the match with back-to-back pins (making it 24-18), but Ben Ruechel’s 9-4 win took the momentum away temporarily.
Antigo’s forfeit win at 215 pounds made it a tight 27-24 Oconto lead, but Nathan Ruechel’s big second-period pin made it 33-24, and all Antigo could manage was a forfeit win from there.
Steven Stock won by a pin at 112 pounds and Kyle Sharkey won by forfeit at 119 to close out the match and the win for Oconto.
Oconto Falls Perfect
In Dominating Win
Over Marinette
There are 84 possible points in a wrestling dual.
Oconto Falls took every single one of them against Marinette Thursday night in an 84-0 beatdown.
The Panthers made quick work of the Marines, winning five matches by forfeit and the other nine by pinfall, nearly all of them coming in the first period.
The only two matches that went into the second period were Mitch Friedman’s 2:55 pin over Cody Bantle at 125 and Cody Nielsen’s 4:52 third-period win over Jaden Boivin at 152 pounds.
Cullan Morrissey (130 pounds) won in 1:45, Aaron Heidersheid (135) beat the clock in 1:59, Bryce Iverson (140) took the win in 1:20.
At 145, Kyle DeBauche needed 1:11 for a win, Jacob Morrissey (160) needed just 21 seconds, Clayton Selsmeyer (171) worked his opponent in 1:31, and Josh Zeitler (215) almost was under a minute at 1:02.
-Saturday’s Results-
Bayer, Drees Pick Up
Wins In Brillion
The two lightest wrestlers from Peshtigo made the biggest impact on the Bulldogs’ third-place finish at the Brillion Invitational Saturday, as 103-pounder Josh Bayer and 112-pound senior Mack Drees wrapped up individual first-place finishes.
Both wrestlers improved their records to 10-0 on the year with the victories.
Derrik Maye (135 pounds) and Mitch Johnson (140) added second-place finishes for Peshtigo and Jake McClain was third at 152 pounds.
Drees worked his way into the championship match with three pins, all coming in the first period, before taking the title with an 11-2 major decision over Sam Parker of Brillion.
Bayer had two byes and won his way into the championship bracket with a late second-period pin.
In the title bracket, Bayer pinned Tanner Brey of Two Rivers in 30 seconds before knocking off Winneconne’s John Roycraft in a tight 10-9 decision.
Maye used a pin and a decision to get into the championship bracket, where he won his first match in 1:11 over Jasob Becker of Green Bay West/Southwest.
In the title match, Shiocton’s Thomas Dahlke pinned Maye in 1:09.
Johnson had a similar fate to get into the championship bracket, and he got into the championship with a 12-3 major decision over Jared Danke of Omro.
In the title match, West/Southwest’s Matt Demars decisioned Johnson 11-7.
McClain lost in his first match of the championship bracket to Winneconne’s Bryce Wenzel (9-4), but won his third-place match in just 41 seconds.
Peshtigo’s 202.5 points was good enough for third place, a half-point ahead of Two Rivers.
Host Brillion won the event with 301 points, and Shiocton was second at 257.
Reinke Wins, Crivitz
Lands In Sixth At
Logroller Invitational
Crivitz got a win from Kyle Reinke at 112 pounds and landed in sixth place at the 17-team Wabeno Logroller Invitational Saturday.
Coleman sent their reserves and finished a respectable seventh, while Gillett-Suring was eighth, and Menominee fell to 14th.
To go along with Reinke’s win, Crivitz also got a second place from John LaFave (140 pounds) and a third from 103-pounder Cody Caylor. The Wolverines finished with 110.5 points. Tomahawk ran away with the event with 284.5.
Coleman sent just a half a team but still managed 94.5 points.
Justin Gryzbowski narrowly missed out at 112 pounds and settled for second, as did 135-pounder Mason Mergener.
Jordyn Schaal added a third-place performance at 145 pounds for the young Cougars.
Gillett-Suring’s only top-three finish came from heavyweight John Verhagen, who was second.
Menominee didn’t get anyone in the top three of any weight class.
Reinke, a junior, improved his record to 11-0 on the season with a bye, a technical fall win (16-0), a pin over Tomahawk’s Turner Wegner (2:42), and a 9-8 decision over Grzybowski, who had a bye and two first-period pins in getting to the final.
LaFave looked good at 140 in getting to the finals, advancing with a bye and two pins, one coming in the first period at 1:59 and the other in the second at 3:02.
In the finals, LaFave lost to Tomahawk’s Rudy Chagoya.
Despite being tech falled by Athens frosh phenom Danny Triminer, Caylor took third place with a pair of pins.
At 135 pounds, Mergener made his mark on a fellow M & O wrestler in Brad Mueller of Gillett-Suring, beating him 12-6.
He went on to win on two more decisions (9-5 and 12-11), before being pinned in the finals in 30 seconds.
Schaal picked up a pin and a decision before being pinned, moving him into the third place match, which he won 3-1.
Verhagen pinned his way into the championship match but lost 7-4 to Escanaba’s Kyle Lajoie.
Menominee didn’t have any top-three finishes but Nick Theuerkauf and Chris Briar both finished in fourth place.
Oconto Falls Lands
In Second At Stacked
Battle On The Bay
If you wanted a power-packed invitational Saturday, this was the place to be.
With three of the top 11 teams in Division 1 (according to the latest Wisconsin Wrestling Online poll) and four of the top 11 in Division 2, including the top teams in both divisions, the competition was about as heated as it can be for December.
Division 2’s top team, the Oconto Falls Panthers, had to come away happy with their result, a second-place finish with 460.5 points at the Battle of the Bay at Bay Port High School.
Division 1’s best, Wisconsin Rapids, ran away with the event by scoring 536.5 points, but the Panthers beat out Luxemburg Casco (412 points, ranked fourth in D2), Green Bay Preble/East (393, 11th in D1) and Pewaukee (371, 6th in D2) for the runner-up spot.
Mukwonago (9th in D1) was sixth and Seymour (11th in D2) was 10th.
The Panthers got a pair of individual wins from their two standout seniors, as Cullan Morrissey and Aaron Heidersheid remained perfect on the season with wins in their respective weight classes.
Morrissey pinned his way through the pool pairings, pinned his way into the championship (all three matches first-period pins) and then got a second-period pin over Pewaukee’s Mitch Teeters to win the title.
Heidersheid used a pin and a decision to get in the championship bracket, where he won by 3-1 decision over Luxemburg-Casco’s Jordan Giachino, and took out Kasey Einerson of Rapids 7-3.
To go along with the two wins, the Panthers got a second place finish from heavyweight Riley Delzer and a third from 125-pounder Mitch Friedman.
Delzer scored two pins to get in the championship bracket, where he got another to advance to the title match.
In the final, Curt Fuller of Rapids knocked off Delzer, 7-4.
Friedman won his two pool matches by pinfall but lost his championship match debut to Chad Stuiber of Ashwaubenon.
In the third-place match he escaped with a 1-0 decision over Josh Berg of Pewaukee.
Matt Damp (103 pounds), Matt Samsa (189) and Josh Zeitler (215) all were fourth-place finishers.
-Tuesday’s Results-
Coleman 2-0,
Gillett-Suring 0-2
At Manawa
The Coleman Cougars flexed their muscles in dual meet format, going 2-0 at the Manawa Double Dual Tuesday night.
The Cougars absolutely dominated both Bonduel (63-6) and Manawa (69-6), while the Gillett-Suring Matmen limped to an 0-2 mark, losing to Bonduel (68-4) and Manawa (41-36).
In Coleman’s impressive win over Bonduel, the Cougars lost just two decisions, while picking up seven pins and a forfeit for a huge total.
Getting pins were Mitch Champagne (:53), Jacob Engels (5:07), Russell Townsend (4:56), Troy Stillings (2:51), Jerit Zeitler (3:00), Jordan Zeitler (1:27) and Chett Birr (4:44).

Champagne, Stillings and both Zeitlers also got pins against Manawa, as did Birr, Mitch Mergener and Baker.
Behnke, Engels, Mike Mergener, and Kuchta all won by forfeit.
Magee won by decision, while Markiewicz and Townsend lost on decisions.
For Gillett-Suring, Brad Mueller got the only win against Bonduel, a 13-4 major decision, while also winning by forfeit in the loss to Manawa.
Also winning against Manawa were Mitch Reinhold, Karos Reinhold, and John Verhagen, all by pin, and Kyle Kallies and Josh Wood by forfeit.
Crivitz Splits
Dual Matches
The Crivitz Wolverines won a thriller over Lakeland 28-27, but also fell to West Iron County 66-12 in a pair of duals held at West Iron County Tuesday night.
In the win, Kyle Reinke and Parker DelosSantos recorded back-to-back decision wins to get the Wolverines the narrow win.
Also winning in the match were John LaFave (major decision), Jake Dobesh, Jon Kersten, Roberto Santos (decisions) and Cody Caylor (forfeit).
Reinke’s pin and Clay Dudkiewicz’s forfeit were the only wins for Crivitz in the loss to WIC.
