1/2 Game Separates Top 3 Teams; Coleman Makes Big Move, Dogs Defeat Suring

Things continue to remain tight in the M-O Conference boys hardwood chase as only a half game separates the top three teams. Coleman and Suring currently share top billing at 4-1 with Peshtigo sitting back at 3-1.

Coach Jim Rosner’s Cougars made the biggest move of the week knocking Peshtigo from the unbeaten ranks 54-47 Thursday before routing Wausaukee Tuesday 63-38.

Meanwhile Suring and Peshtigo came up with a split on the hardwood courts. The Eagles clipped Crivitz 47-24 while the Bulldogs were collared by Coleman. Looking to stay in the thick of the chase, Peshtigo flexed their defensive muscle to hand Suring their first loss of the season 47-43 and move into third place.

Elsewhere around the circuit, STAA collected a pair of big wins as scoring ace Tyler Price torched the nets for 55 points to knock off Lena 63-34 and Gillett 72-62 for a 3-2 conference readout.

Defending champion Crivitz got back on track and improved to 3-2 with a 75-60 victory over Lena Tuesday.

Two more dates await the conference cagers prior to the holiday break. The biggest of the battles will find the current co-leaders squaring off in Coleman on December 22.

Defense, Strehlow

Key 47-24 Suring Win

Combining a stingy defense along with another 21 point performance from Chad Strehlow, Suring rolled to their fourth straight conference win by clipping Crivitz 47-24.

Defense was the name of this slow down cage clash as the Eagles held Crivitz to single figures in every quarter. The home win also marked the return of senior guard Ryan LaMarre from a broken leg suffered during the football season.

While the Wolverines struggled for points, Suring put six players in the score book to cruise to the win. Leading the way was the 6’3 Strehlow with 21 points and 6 rebounds. Strehlow was at his best in the first half tossing in 14 points. Being able to score from inside or outside, Strehlow finished with five two-pointers and a trio of threes. The soft shooting Suring scorer twirled the twine twice from behind the arc in the opening quarter then added a fourth period bomb.

Keith Manecke added 8 points and 8 rebounds, Neil Dickson netted 7 while LaMarre chipped in with 5 points. One of LaMarre’s shots found the mark from three point land. Blake Strehlow handed out 4 assists and LaMarre 3 while the Eagles shot 19-47 from the field (40%).

With Strehlow tossing in 8 points and Manecke two, the Eagles jumped out to a 10-8 lead at the first break. Suring managed to keep the upper hand in the second frame (12-6) as Strehlow continued to find success around the bucket with 6 more points.

Tightening up their defense over the final two periods, Suring ran off a 25-10 scoring spurt to win going away. A 10-4 third frame put the Eagles in charge at 32-18 before sealing things with a 15-6 fourth quarter edge.

Brandon Gross and Richie Fullerton topped Crivitz with 6 points each, Jordan Hardy and Nick Sterry added 4 each while Bryant Czerniewski and Dan Poh tallied 2 points each.

Coleman Hands Peshtigo

First Conference Setback

Coleman used a nice all-around floor game by junior guard Garry Johnson to knock Peshtigo from their unbeaten ranks in conference play 54-47. The Cougar floor general burned the Bulldogs for 16 points while continually weaving his way through their porous man to man defense to get the ball to open mates. Johnson added an assist and two rebounds.

Andrew Korpi, the other half of the Coleman backcourt, chipped in with 11 points and 4 rebounds, Steve Kuchta added 8 points and 5 boards, 6’6 Brandon Dey 7 points and 15 rebounds while Greg Phillips added 6 points and 8 boards.

“It was an ugly win, but a nice one,” Coleman coach Jim Rosner said. “Coming off the Crivitz game and with no practice on Wednesday because of the snow, we came out with some intensity and reversed the ball better on offense. Plus our role players got some big rebounds and put backs.....proves we can play with other good teams in the conference.”

Thanks to the quickness of Johnson and Korpi, Coleman was able to jump out to a commanding 18-4 lead after 8 minutes then maintained their composure after Peshtigo knotted the score a couple of times in the second half.

“Johnson got around a lot of their defenders and did a nice job against the press. He is quicker than people think. Korpi is a good shooter and when he gets in a zone like that, he doesn’t miss,” Rosner remarked. “This was a big win for us. Coming in we knew it was going to be a big test and our kids responded. Now we have to continue to play at that level.”

While Coleman had their way early and often, the Bulldogs struggled locating the hoop. Coach Ryan Spaulding saw his troops connect on 29% of their shots (17-59), including 24% on three pointers (4-17). Free throws were another sore spot for the Bulldogs (9-21), but just 1-6 in the fourth quarter.

“I don’t think we were flat, but we do have to come ready to play. We knew Coleman would be a tough match up, especially at their place. It wasn’t just one thing that hurt us, but a number of different things. That is good because if we do a couple of things better, we win this game,” Spaulding said.

Collin Terry topped the Bulldogs with a double-double.....22 points and 10 rebounds, 16 of those points coming in the second half. James Meeks netted 10 points and 4 steals, Brandon Barrette 5 points and 3 rebounds, Jeff Gardon 5 points and 6 boards while Michael Berth chipped in with 4 points and 3 rebounds.

“Bottom line this loss needs to help us if we want to get to the next level. The kids have to realize we can not just go on the court and win,” Spaulding added.

It was all Coleman in the first 8 minutes as Rosner watched his cagers nearly land an early knockout punch with a 18-4 scoring spurt. Johnson and Dey were the offensive catalysts with 5 points each while Dey used his height advantage to pull down 8 rebounds in the period.

Kuchta nailed a jumper to put Coleman up 3-0 before his mates went on a 12-0 run for a commanding 14-2 spread. Dey tallied 5 straight points on a trey and offensive rebound (10-2) before Johnson dribbled his way in for a pair of buckets and that big lead (2:51).

Terry finally got Peshtigo back on the board drilling a pair of free throws with 2:44 remaining in the frame only to see Ethan Bornick connect on a jumper and Johnson beat the buzzer for a 14 point cushion.

The teams switched roles in the second frame with the Bulldogs getting things straightened out to the tune of a 15-4 spurt. Picking up the Cougars fullcourt and trying to force a faster tempo, Peshtigo opened the quarter with a 12-2 surge. Meeks got things rolling with a layup, Gardon converted a three point play and Terry connected on a pair of free throws for a 20-13 deficit (3:33). Peshtigo continued to apply pressure allowing Terry to sneak in for a layup and Meeks to convert a steal into points for a 20-18 score.

Two free throws by Johnson temporarily stopped the Bulldog comeback (22-18) only to see Berth hit the front end of a bonus shot with 33 seconds left for that 22-19 halftime score.

Continuing their fast pace approach, the Bulldogs got even at 25-all on a three point play by sophomore guard Brandon Barrette (5:54) but could never gain the upper hand. Baskets by Johnson and Korpi gave Coleman a 29-25 lead only to see the Bulldogs close within a point as Terry drilled a trey with 5:01 left.

Coleman didn’t crumble, instead relied on the play of their backcourt aces to regain control with a 8-3 run. Johnson snuck through for a layup then watched Korpi hit back-to-back three point shots for a 37-30 spread (2:11). A pair of free throws by Johnson (0:20) followed by a buzzer beating bucket from Johnson allowed Coleman to take a 41-34 lead into the fourth quarter. Korpi and Johnson combined for all 19 Coleman points in the period, including 11 by Korpi and a trio of three point shots.

Terry drilled a jumper to get the Bulldogs headed in the right direction to open the fourth quarter before things went down hill from there. Four straight missed free throws by Gardon, Tyler Marquardt and Barrette allowed the Cougars to pull out to a 43-36 edge (2:59).

With time winding down, the Bulldogs were forced to foul 10 times in the period. Coleman took advantage of the “hacks” hitting 7 of 14 free throws to stay in front. Kuchta went 4-8 in the period, Johnson 1-3 while Eric Nasgovitz added a pair of tosses with under a minute to play.

The closest Peshtigo got in the final two minutes was 47-42 on a three point shot by Terry at the 1:12 mark. Kuchta went 3-4 over the next 40 seconds to stretch the Coleman lead to 52-44 (0:20), Nasgovitz added two tosses with 12 ticks left and Meeks beat the buzzer for Peshtigo’s final points.

“Defensively we didn’t stop them like we should have, need to play smarter on that end of the court. Give Coleman credit, they came ready to play,” Spaulding said.

Coleman finished with a 40% shooting mark (19-47) and made 12 of 23 free throws. Off the backboards the Cougars put together a 44-30 edge, including 13 offensive rebounds. Rosner was pleased with the play of his “paint people” with 30 points while also owning a 12-1 edge in bench points.

Prices Fires In 27 Points

As Cavaliers Roll 63-34

Putting together his best shooting effort of the young season, Tyler Price found the mark for 27 points as STAA leveled Lena 63-34.

Price was certainly right in this clash registering 10 two pointers, one three and going 4-4 at the free throw stripe. The sharp shooting senior poured in 13 points in the first half then burned the Lena defense for 12 in the third quarter.

Price had plenty of back up as Joey Brostowitz collected 14 points, Diego Alvarez 11 and Victor Duffrin 7.

Craig Huberty led Lena with 10 points, Luke Imig added 8 and Robert Harley 7.

After claiming a 16-11 first quarter lead, the Cavaliers took control of the game by shutting out Lena in period two 8-zip. Price keyed the offense in the spurt with 8 points and Duffrin added 4.

Leading 34-11 at halftime, STAA rode 12 more points from Price to a 20-12 third quarter spurt and a 54-23 spread. Over the final 8 minutes the Cavaliers were outscored 11-9 as Huberty tallied 6 of his team high 8 points.

Lena claimed the jayvee game 28-18.

Krause Leads Gillett

Past Niagara 60-54

Nick Krause, the conference’s leading scorer, was back at it again Friday night pumping in 31 points as Gillett knocked off Niagara 60-54 for their first M-O win. Krause paced a trio of Tigers in double figures as Zach Johnson added 15 points and Blair Hicks 10.

In the closely played cage clash, Gillett held the upper hand throughout the entire first half with a 15-13 lead after one period and 28-24 at the midway point. Niagara closed the gap to 44-41 after three frames before Gillett wrapped up the win with a 16-13 surge over the final 8 minutes.

Ryan Dunnick topped Niagara with 14 points while Devin Jeffords added 13.

Defense, Rebounding

Send Bulldogs Past

Suring For 47-43 Win

A superb team defensive effort along with a 36-22 rebounding advantage sparked the Bulldogs to a thrilling 47-43 win over previously unbeaten Suring. The battle of conference heavyweights saw the Bulldog defense limit high scoring Chad Strehlow to 12 points, 9 points below his average while dominating the boards to the tune of 16 on the offensive end.

While Peshtigo did a number on the defensive end, a trio of seniors took care of things on the offensive side. Collin Terry recorded his second straight “double-double” with 17 points and 10 rebounds, Jeff Gardon flashed plenty of hustle and determination with 15 points and 8 rebounds while James Meeks collected 7 points and 4 rebounds to go along with some clutch free throws in the final minute. Another senior, Michael Berth, didn’t make his way into the scoring column, but hauled down down 7 rebounds and led the charge to limit Strehlow.

“Our guys gave a huge effort on the defensive end. Berth and Barrette worked hard to help stop two very good Suring players in Strehlow and LaMarre,” Spaulding explained. “We would have not beat them without a team effort...showed we are capable of beating anybody when we come to play.”

Displaying better shot selection, the Bulldogs connected on 18 of 49 field goal attempts (37%) and 6-12 at the charity stripe.

Keith Manecke topped the Suring scoring with 15 points and 6 rebounds, Strehlow added 12 points and 3 boards. Showing no ill effects from that football injury (leg) LaMarre netted 8 points and 5 boards while directing the Suring attack.

“Peshtigo’s interior defense made things difficult for Chad...then at times Chad was open and we did not get him the ball,” Suring coach Gary Regal said. “Ryan’s leg is fine. We probably had too much of a two man game tonight...had too many guys standing around and watching, instead of playing.”

After Strehlow completed a three point play and Neil Dickson tossed in a jumper for a 5-3 Suring lead, the Bulldogs went on a 10-5 spurt to close out the opening quarter on top 13-10. Gardon snuck through for a layup to tie the score at 5-all before Terry sandwiched a pair of three point shots around a Meeks jumper.

Peshtigo stretched their lead to 21-15 at the 5:08 mark of period two as Gardon worked for two offensive rebounds leading to a free throw and bucket, Terry continued to be red hot canning his fourth “trey” and Barrette hit a 5-foot leaner.

Suring wouldn’t back down as Manecke converted a three point play (21-18) and Strehlow a jumper for a 23-20 deficit with 3:01 left in the half. Points were hard to come by the rest of the period as Gardon put Peshtigo up 25-20 with a drive to the hoop (2:21) and LaMarre used a nifty head fake to twirl the twine with 1:42 remaining for that 25-22 halftime score.

Period three started in Peshtigo’s favor as Terry found the mark for a trey and a 28-23 spread (7:02) only to see Suring reel off 8 straight points to gain the upper hand at 31-28. Freshman Blake Strehlow, cousin of Chad, tallied a trey, LaMarre followed with a jumper to tie the score at 28-28 (6:18) before Manecke drilled a three pointer.

With the momentum clearly on the Suring sideline, the Bulldogs bounced back as Gardon made his mark in the “paint area” with back to back buckets for a 32-31 lead (4:02). After Strehlow answered with a “trey”, Gardon grabbed another offensive rebound and scored for a 34-34 contest. Sophomore guard Barrette hit from just inside the free throw stripe (0:47) only to see Manecke fire in a three pointer with 27 seconds left to give Suring a 37-36 edge at the break.

Manecke upped Suring’s lead to 39-36 to open the fourth quarter before two free throws by Terry and a driving layup from Gardon put Peshtigo back on top for good 40-39 with 5:31 left. Showing some much needed patience on offense, the Bulldogs padded their lead shaking junior guard Tyler Marquardt free for back-to-back layups and a 44-39 cushion (3:07).

But this game was still far from over. Manecke and Strehlow hooked up on jumpers as Suring closed within 44-43 (1:43) only to see their next possession get ruined by Gardon, who blocked a LaMarre layup attempt.

The defensive gem kept the Bulldogs in front and helped set up their final surge. All free throws by Meeks. Overcoming some late game ball handling woes, the Bulldogs sealed the win as Meeks hit two free throws with 37 seconds left (46-43) before swishing the front end with 3.9 left for the clinching points.

“Last year we didn’t win many close games, but this year are...sign of maturity. This is a good win for us but we aren’t looking at the conference right now, we just want to win as many games as we can and keep on improving,” Spaulding added.

Suring finished with a 17-47 shooting mark (36%), including 6 of 20 three pointers and 19 turnovers.

“Peshtigo is probably the most athletic team in the conference and they caused us some problems tonight. Peshtigo out-played and out-hustled us...played with a lot more heart than we did. They bloodied our nose and we did not fight back,” Regal concluded.

Peshtigo claimed the jayvee game 41-20 as Scott Duffield pumped in 11 points.

Balanced Scoring Sends

Coleman Past Rangers

Putting three players in double figures, the Cougars maintained their share of first place with a 63-38 road win over Wausaukee. Steve Kuchta paced the Cougars with 18 points, Brandon Dey added 15 and Garry Johnson 14.

Coleman busted out to a 31-18 halftime cushion and was never pressed over the final two frames. Kuchta fired in three of his four “treys” in the first half while Johnson added 8 points in the fourth quarter.

Jason Schlies netted 13 points to lead the Rangers, 9 of those coming in the first half. Jake Wszelaki added 9 points while Corbin Mosher, Ryan Nystrom and Rudy Krueger tallied 4 points each.

Wausaukee won the jayvee game 35-30.

Crivitz Cleans Up

On Wildcats 75-60

Points were plentiful as Crivitz rolled to a 75-60 home win over Lena. In a high scoring first half, the Wolverines raced to a 40-36 lead before using a 17-7 third quarter run to pull away.

Nick Sterry tallied 20 points for the winners, Richie Fullerton 12, Bryant Czerniewski 11 and Brandon Gross 10. Sterry was at his best in the first half with 14 points while Gross tallied 8 in the opening frame.

Zach Klister tossed in 14 points for Lena, 9 in the second period. Luke Imig and Craig Huberty added 11 points each while Bryan Klister scored 10.

Brostowitz, Price Net

28 Points Each As

Cavaliers Tip Tigers

In a shootout featuring two of the top scorers in the conference, STAA got 28 points each from Joey Brostowitz and Tyler Price to turn back Gillett 72-62. Brostowitz connected for 11 baskets and went 6-6 at the free throw line while Price had 8 buckets and a 12-14 effort at the foul stripe.

Victor Duffrin added 7 points for the Cavaliers, Diego Alvarez 5 and Matt Wubben 4.

The league’s top scorer, Nick Krause, paced Gillett with 27 points while Blair Hicks and Zach Peterson added 10 each.

Gillett claimed the jayvee game 52-21.

Niagara Gets Nudged

By Northland Pines

Niagara owned a 26-24 halftime lead before coming out on the short end of a 49-45 setback to Northland Pines Tuesday. The biggest problem for Niagara was coming up with points down the stretch as they went scoreless for the final 3:30 after building up a 4 point lead.

Ryan Dunnick led the Badgers with 20 points while Peter Sharrow fired in 22 for the winners.
