Gal Powers To Square Off

Top-Ranked Teams Put

Unbeaten Marks On Line

In Pre-Christmas Showdown

It’s looking more and more like a two-team race in the M & O Conference, with the Peshtigo and Gillett gals assuming early control with identical 4-0 records.

Peshtigo is dominating their opponents along the way, while Gillett is doing plenty to get by and out with a win.

The two teams will be in action Friday night (Gillett at Crivitz, Peshtigo at home against Lena), and will likely head into Tuesday’s mega battle with 5-0 records.

Peshtigo completely dominated Coleman and Suring over the week, while Gillett knocked off Niagara and STAA in close but not too close battles.

Peshtigo senior Alyssa Pyscher scored 31 points Tuesday night to reach 995 for her career, and she will be at home Friday night in her quest for 1,000 career points.

She is averaging 21 points per conference game this season and will almost certainly achieve the honor Friday.

In other match-ups, Wausaukee was 1-0 on the week with a last-second win over Coleman, while Lena got their first win, as did Suring.

Bulldogs Pull Away

Late For Lopsided

Win Over Cougars

Despite a small first-half margin, the Peshtigo Bulldogs were able to win with relative ease over their conference rival, the Coleman Cougars, 60-36.

Turnovers plagued the Cougars against a Peshtigo team stacked with offensive weapons.

“Basically, you cannot beat a good team having as many turnovers as points,” said Cougars coach Jeff Bronson. “When Peshtigo had a chance to score on a break–they did.”

The Bulldogs had three players reach double figures and had a total of six with at least six points, taking advantage of every opportunity given while the Cougars shot just 28%.

Alyssa Pyscher scored 15 points to lead the Bulldogs, while junior Taylor Huss added 13 more.

“You know going into the game Pyscher will get her points and (Sarah) Dobbin will play well (six points), (but) Huss is what makes them dangerous,” Bronson admitted. “She played well on both sides of the ball. She is strong, quick, fluid. A very underrated player.”

Melissa Stone came off the bench to add 10 points for Peshtigo, who scored 36 points in the second half.

The Cougars were led by Gina Gwidt’s 11 points, but the shooting still wasn’t there, and thanks to turnovers, neither were the opportunities.

“We are not a good shooting team so we need all the shots we can get,” Bronson admitted. “As I have been saying, we have lots of work left to do.”

“(Friday) showed that if we can limit the turnovers, we can play with the top half of the conference–we just cannot fall apart,” Bronson concluded.

Kayla Johnson added nine for the Cougars.

Third Quarter Run

Lifts Tigers To Win

An 11-4 third quarter run helped the Gillett Tigers pull away from the Niagara Badgers Friday night in a 38-30 victory.

Ali McQuillan had a three and Lauren Kasten and Laura Wagner each added a pair of buckets in the period as the Tigers assumed control after taking a 24-21 halftime lead.

McQuillan, who had seven points as the Tigers stayed ahead in the second quarter, finished with a game-high 14 points to lead the Tigers.

Kasten added eight points, while Wagner and Alaena Wocking each chipped in with seven.

Niagara was led by Ashley Beauchamp’s 10 points. Haylee Rose added seven.

Molosky Gets Help

As Cavalettes Prevail

Juliana Molosky was able to find some scoring help on the St. Thomas Aquinas team, and that translated to another win for the Cavalettes, who knocked off Lena 43-34 Friday night.

Molosky still shouldered the brunt of the scoring for the Cavalettes with 17 points and 10 rebounds, but she also saw an eight-point, 11-rebound performance from Keisha Stuart.

Lexi Wilson was able to add six points for St. Thomas Aquinas, Marlena Ryan had five, Maranda Ryan had four and Natalie Dombkowski had three and seven rebounds.

Becky Huberty led the Wildcats with 11 points, and teammate Marlena Wagner added eight.

Suring Does Just

Enough To Edge

Wolverines, 33-31

After Suring took a 22-21 halftime lead, both the Eagles and the Crivitz Wolverines slowed down their scoring, but the Eagles did enough to pull out a 33-31 win.

The teams combined for just nine points in the third quarter and had 12 collectively in the final quarter, as the Eagles prevailed.

Lindsey Schroeder, Brittany Thomas and Shantel Schroeder led the Eagles in scoring, as all of them chipped in with a half-dozen points.

Ali Hockers led the way for the Wolverines with 15 points in the loss.

-Tuesday’s Results-

Pyscher Owns Eagles,

Closes In On 1,000

Alyssa Pyscher scored 31 points and two other Peshtigo players reached double figures as the Bulldogs dominated the Suring Eagles Tuesday night, 70-29.

Pyscher now needs just five points in her next contest to reach 1,000 points in her career, a milestone for any high school player.

Pyscher, who scored 20 points in the first half Tuesday night, will have a chance to do that in front of her home crowd Friday night as the Bulldogs take on Lena at 6 p.m. before the boys’ game.

The Bulldogs raced out to a 23-8 lead in the first quarter and added 20 more in the second, grabbing a 43-17 halftime lead and never looking back.

“All the girls on the team played a great game and everyone contributed,” said Bulldog coach Matt Paris. “Couldn’t be prouder of the girls.”

Taylor Huss added 14 points for the winning squad and Melissa Stone had 10.

Andrea Cisar and Jordyn Sleeter each had five points to lead the Eagles’ effort.

Peshtigo will be hosting Lena Friday and will play for first place outright Tuesday at Gillett.

That game will also be a “same-site” game, which means the girls and boys will both play at the same site, with the girls starting at 6.

Suring will host Wausaukee Friday night in a same-site game, and takes on Coleman at home Tuesday at the normal time.

Coleman Misses Chance

At Win, Arndt Doesn’t

This was Coleman’s opportunity to prove they belonged in the top half of the conference.

Playing a team that has established themselves as one of the league’s best, in a tie game, with the ball and a chance for a final shot.

But it went just about as bad as it could go for the Cougars, who executed the play almost the right way but wound up fouling Wausaukee’s Brooke Arndt, turning the ball over and putting Arndt on the line to ice a 32-30 win for Wausaukee.

“The end of the game sums our year to date,” admitted Jeff Bronson. “We had the ball with 5.7 seconds left, set a play–executed it correctly–but could not score and then for an added bonus we fouled.”

The quick turn of events in what was a 30-30 tie led to Arndt calmly sinking a pair of free throws and letting Wausaukee sneak away with a victory.

“I give Wausaukee credit, they made the plays when they needed to,” added Bronson.

The Cougars played good defense and allowed the Rangers just eight field goals all night.

But what has plagued the Cougars all season came about again, as they turned the ball over and didn’t shoot well.

“As a team we need to do a better job valuing the ball,” Bronson opined. “Too many travels, too many passes to no one or to our opponents.”

“Not being a good shooting team means we need all the shots we can get, and right now we are making it too easy for defenses,” Bronson concluded.

Megan Arthur had six of Wausaukee’s eight two-point buckets, while she also hit on 7-of-10 free throws for a 19-point total.

Wausaukee was 16-of-23 from the line on the night.

Brittany Fifarek added eight points on 6-of-7 shooting for Wausaukee.

Jenna Kerr’s 10 points were tops for Coleman.

Wausaukee will look to continue their winning ways when they travel to Suring Friday night for a 6 p.m. tip-off, and when they take on Lena.

Coleman has off in the league Friday night and goes to Suring Tuesday.

Lena Gets

First Win

Becky Huberty scored 15 points and grabbed eight rebounds as the Lena Wildcats got their first win of the season, a 33-24 victory over Crivitz.

The Wildcats went into the final period down by a point but outscored Crivitz 17-7.

Marlena Wagner added seven points for the winning squad, and Charity Dufek had five.

Ashley Behnke’s 10 points led the Wolverines, and Katie Gauthier had six.

Lena will be at Peshtigo this Friday night (6 pm) and will host Wausaukee on Tuesday, a pair of tough games.

Crivitz will search for their first win when they host Gillett Friday night and go to Niagara Tuesday.

Gillett Knocks

Off STAA, 46-38

Lauren Kasten had 14 points as the Gillett Tigers defeated the St. Thomas Aquinas Cavalettes, 46-38.

Juliana Molosky scored 14 points to lead the Cavalettes, while Lexi Wilson added 10.

No information was received from Gillett.

The Tigers improved to 4-0 in league play with the win and will take that record to Crivitz Friday night, before an ever-important battle with Peshtigo (4-0) Tuesday night in Gillett.

STAA will go to Niagara Friday night.

-Non-League Results-

Badgers Fall To

Northland Pines

A 35-20 halftime deficit was too much for Niagara to overcome in their 47-34 defeat to Northland Pines Tuesday night.

Ashley Beauchamp led the Badgers with 11 points and Haylee Rose added eight.

One of Niagara’s top scoring threats in Miranda Lundin did not play.

Megan Gwyn sparked Northland Pines with 15 points, all coming in the first half.
