Suring Takes Over M-O Lead; Tumble Continues For Bulldogs

In a pre-Christmas first place showdown at Coleman, senior guard Ryan LaMarre came to the rescue time and time again to lead Suring to a hard fought 45-40 victory. The win gives the Eagles (7-1, 6-1) sole possession of first place in the M-O while the Cougars dropped all the way to third.

Only getting a minute of playing time from talented inside performer Chad Strehlow (flu), the Eagles turned things over to LaMarre and he didn’t let his mates down. The backcourt ace fired in a game high 22 points, including 10 in the fourth quarter as Suring opened up a one game conference lead.

Elsewhere in league play, Crivitz overcame a slow start to turn back Niagara 49-39, Lena whipped Wausaukee 66-42 and Gillett rode a 29 point, 9 rebound performance from senior standout Nick Krause to a 57-48 home win over Peshtigo.

The loss was the third in the last four games for the inconsistent Bulldogs, who were expected to be one of the top three teams in the circuit. Peshtigo (3-3, 3-3) owns wins over the top two teams in the circuit, Suring and Crivitz, but has come up on the wrong end of setbacks to Coleman, Lena and now Gillett.

Following a couple of holiday tournaments, conference play will resume on Tuesday, January 5 with a full slate of games. League leading Suring will get a bye to open the new year while Crivitz heads to STAA, Coleman visits Lena, Niagara travels to Peshtigo and Gillett entertains Wausaukee.

M-O hardwood contests tip off at 7:30pm.

-Tuesday’s Results-

LaMarre Leads Suring

Past Coleman 45-40

The brilliant play of LaMarre sparked pre-season favorite Suring to a hard earned 45-40 win over Coleman. The battle of the top two teams in the conference saw LaMarre tally 22 points as the short-handed Eagles prevailed.

Short handed? You betcha! The flu bug limited talented junior center Chad Strehlow to a minute of action before he was forced to leave the game and the gym.

“Chad was sick with the flu the whole day...at school, on the bus, during the jayvee game and obviously the varsity game. He tried to play, but only lasted a minute before being forced to leave. Chad then went home with his dad,” Suring coach Gary Regal said.

With Strehlow out of action, the Eagles looked to LaMarre even more in this pre-Christmas showdown. Putting together a brilliant floor game, LaMarre more than made up for the loss of Strehlow according to coach Regal.

“Ryan got his swagger back, took over the game and not just in scoring. He did a great job of ball control, drive and dishes as well as handling their pressure down the stretch,” Regal added. “We don’t play again until January 4, so it will be nice to have Ryan and Chad 100% after the holiday break.”

LaMarre wasn’t the only Eagle to have a big game as Mitch Jensen nailed a pair of three point shots to finish with 8, Blake Strehlow and Neil Dickson added 4 points each while Keith Manecke chipped in with 3.

“Jensen gave us a big lift...hit some big shots, took care of the ball and defended well,” Regal said.

Displaying plenty of patience on offense, the Eagles busted out to a 13-9 first quarter lead as LaMarre fired in 6 points, hitting a trey as did Jensen. The Eagles held the upper hand over the next 8 minutes 12-9 with LaMarre drilling another three point shot for 5 in the frame while Jensen, Charlie Truttman and Ryan Paulick added a bucket each.

Over the opening 8 minutes the best of the Cougars was Steve Kuchta with 5 points, including a second quarter trey. After going scoreless in the first quarter, the 6’6 Dey managed 4 points in the second frame.

Holding that 25-18 halftime spread, the Eagles saw their offense stall in the third frame as Coleman unloaded a 9-5 spurt. Dey pumped in a pair of buckets and Andrew Korpi a three point shot while Dickson fired in two jumpers for Suring.

After seeing their lead cut to 30-27, Suring held on thanks to a 15-13 spurt and the play of LaMarre. With the game on the line, the smooth shooting southpaw tallied 10 points, including a 6-8 free throw mark.

Dey paced Coleman with 13 points, 9 of those coming in the second half while Korpi added 8 and Kuchta 7.

Krause Exploits

Bulldogs, Scores

29 In Gillett Win

As Nick Krause goes, so go the Gillett Tigers,

Krause went off for 29 points and the Tigers picked up a 57-48 win over Peshtigo last Tuesday night.

Krause’s 29-point, nine-rebound, four-block effort gave us all another reminder as to why he was the league’s player of the year choice last season.

Whether it was driving to the basket for layups and free throw attempts or spotting up for a jumper from anywhere inside the half-court line, Krause made it happen for Gillett at Peshtigo’s expense.

The Bulldogs, meanwhile, shot just 31% from the floor throughout the game, including a 5-for-17 performance from outside.

Both teams protected the ball well and the rebounding battle was even, but Krause, who started hot with eight first quarter points, proved to be the difference.

His eight points in the first frame helped the Tigers roll out to a 17-9 lead, but Peshtigo outscored Gillett 21-12 in the second quarter and took a one-point lead into the halftime break.

Collin Terry drilled back-to-back three’s to pull Peshtigo within five early in the quarter, and he would add six more points in the quarter to pull Peshtigo back.

The Bulldogs also got buckets from Tyler Marquardt, Michael Berth and James Meeks while Gillett cooled off.

Gillett eased back into a rhythm in the third quarter as the teams traded buckets.

Brandon Barrette started the half with a short bucket to give the Bulldogs their biggest lead of the entire evening (three), but back-to-back buckets from Krause put Gillett back on top.

Terry’s three with 5:01 left in the third made it 35-33 in favor of Peshtigo but Krause tied it with a two-pointer and made it a two-point Gillett lead with two free throws a half-minute later.

Krause was simply unstoppable in the frame, scoring two more buckets before Peshtigo finally broke a nearly four-minute scoreless streak when Berth hit two free throws.

Marquardt’s bucket with 40 seconds left in the quarter cut the four-point lead in half and Peshtigo still remained close.

Travis Lewis opened up the scoring in the fourth and pushed Gillett’s lead back to four, but consecutive buckets from Barrette and Marquardt tied it back up.

Lewis and Terry traded three’s before Lewis hit on a short bucket and Krause followed suit, putting the Tigers up by four.

Marquardt cut it in half but Blair Hicks’ bucket made it four again.

Peshtigo had a chance to trim it to a one-possession game, but Jeff Gardon missed a pair of free throws and Krause and Bryce Johnson iced it from there.

Terry spent much of the second half in foul trouble but still led the Bulldogs with 19 points.

Meeks added 10 points and Marquardt had eight for Peshtigo.

Zach Johnson’s nine points and six rebounds provided a big spark for the Tigers, and Hicks and Bryce Johnson each added six points.

Gillett shot 47% from the floor and had 36 points in the paint.

Fullcourt Press Keys

48-39 Crivitz Victory

Falling behind 8-0 to open the game, Crivitz turned to fullcourt pressure to eventually wear down Niagara and cause numerous turnovers in a 48-39 road win.

Coach Jeff Baumann’s troops battled within 12-10 at the first break then unloaded a 16-3 second period blitzing to take control. The lone Niagara bucket came on a three point bank shot by Kris Reed.

Despite being outscored 24-22 over the final two frames, Crivitz stayed in control and was never threatened.

Working his way along the baseline, Brandon Gross pumped in 17 points, floor general Rich Fullerton added 12 points and Bryant Czerniewski 8.

“We started out poorly but the press got us going and led to some easy buckets. Fullerton had a nice game at point guard and took care of the ball. The kids worked hard for the win,” Baumann said.

Ryan Dunnick and Devin Jeffords topped Niagara with 16 and 13 points while Joey Zawada chipped in with 8.

“We jumped out to a 8-0 lead and then turnovers (23) started to add up. We actually played fairly well at times,” Niagara coach Jim Hooglund said.

Niagara finished with a 17-50 shooting mark (34%) and hauled down 36 rebounds with Zawada grabbing 12 and Weston Sexton 7.

Crivitz connected on 18 of 45 shots (40%) while claiming 29 boards, 8 by Czerniewski.

Wildcats Wallop

Wausaukee 66-42

The one-two punch of Zach Klister and Luke Imig combined for 37 points as Lena had too much offensive firepower for Wausaukee 66-42.

After getting held scoreless in the first quarter, Klister pumped in 19 points the rest of the way to lead Lena. Imig added 12 of his 18 points in the first half while Evan Petska chipped in with 8 points, 6 in the opening quarter.

Jason Schlies was the lone Ranger to make his way into double figure scoring with 21 points. The senior was blanked in the opening frame then scored 8 in period two, 7 in the third and 6 more in the fourth. Jake Wszelaki chipped in with 7 points and Rudy Krueger 6.

A big first half scoring explosion allowed Lena to take control...12-6 in the opening frame followed by a 24-14 second period surge. Over the final two frames, the Cats kept the scoring pressure on with a 30-22 edge.

In the jayvee game, Wausaukee claimed a 40-24 win.
