I.W. Stephenson, III Prominent area resident, I.W. “Ike” Stephenson III, 76, of Green Bay passed away Monday, Feb. 1 at his home.
The great-grandson of Senator Isaac Stephenson of Marinette was born May 1, 1933 in Hartford, Conn. to I.W. Stephenson, II (Col. USAF) and Molly George. His mother was killed in a car accident in 1934 and his father, an aircraft engineer, raised him while working for Pratt and Whitney Aircraft Corporation. Later when his father obtained the rank of Colonel in the Air Force and while serving during World War II, he lived in Marinette with his Grandmother Stephenson.
In 1947 his father was also killed in a car accident and he was then cared for by his aunt and uncle, Mary (Stephenson) and George Denman. He completed his secondary education at Admiral Farragut Academy, St. Petersburg, Fla. and then earned a degree from Spartan Aviation College, Tulsa, Okla. His aviation career followed. He flew all types of aircraft from single engine private planes to commercial airliners. Flying jobs included pipeline patrol in Oklahoma, transport trips to India, running Stephenson Air Taxi, serving as chief pilot at Island Air in the United States Virgin Islands and flying for Fontana Aviation of Iron Mountain, Mi. He was an advocate for general aviation and for the Twin County Airport, serving briefly on its governing body.
His primary avocation was sailing, which began as a youth and continued his whole life. While in California he sailed in the Mercury Class and later in the Dragon Class competing in the 1956 Olympic trials. He sailed as crew on the Great Lakes for noted yachtsman, such as Douglas Jones and Daniel Coffey. His first boat was a Kings Cruiser called Cayo. For the 1967 season he sailed Perfection, a Lecomte Medalist, which was a fixture in the Menominee Marina for the rest of his life. He raced her in the Chicago Mackinac Race, 100 Miler and 100’s more races.
He married the former Susan Lindsay on Nov. 26, 1966 in Escanaba, Mi. at the First Presbyterian Church. The couple first lived in the Caribbean as he continued his flying career. They then moved to Menominee and made their home at 1818 First Street. She assisted him in racing Perfection and later performed race committee work. Their son, Isaac was born July 5, 1971.
An avid reader, he also wrote for the Menominee Herald Leader and Marinette Eagle Star on aviation in “Wings and Things” and sailing via “Waterfront News”. He was also heard on WMAM. He was a member of numerous organizations, including M&M Yacht Club, US Sailing Sports Car Club of America, Coast Guard Auxiliary and Rotary. He served as Commodore, Rear Commodore and Director of the M&M Yacht Club and as president of Rotary.
His wife, Susan survives, along with his son, Isaac (Jennifer) and a cousin, Mary Kay Denman.
Friends may call at Cadieu-Thielen Funeral Home on Friday, Feb. 5 from 4 p.m. until time of service at 6 p.m. Rev. Craig Mansur will officiate and burial will be in Forest Home Cemetery in Marinette.
