DOT Plans 64/141 Overpass In 2014

Mike Berg, Northeast Wisconsin Regional Director for Wisconsin Department of Transportation recently passed along the good news that an overpass interchange should be constructed at the intersection of Hwy. 141 and Hwy. 64 in Pound in 2014.

Berg met with local officials in Coleman on Friday, June 23 to discuss their concerns about the intersection. “ The DOT is very concerned about safety on the highway and we’ve been watching that intersection since it was built and we made some modifications to it already,” Berg said. “We had fatalities there and were very concerned.” Berg said the modifications after accidents there helped. In 2008 and 2009 there were no crashes. Berg said DOT people felt better about it, “but local residents who used it on a daily basis felt different. Then a fatality again this spring made us look again.”

After meeting with local officials on June 23 Berg told them he would have to go back to his office and look at where engineering was in regard to the hoped-for overpass and if they could find money to fund it.

“I am pleased to say we can build that in 2014. The engineering will be done and we were able to find the funding,” Berg told the Peshtigo Times Wednesday, July 28. He said WISDOT had previously purchased the property that will be needed for the interchange.

In a letter to Marinette County Board Chair George Bousley dated Wednesday, July 21, Berg said the June 23 meeting had ben very productive and he appreciated the perspective shared by local officials.

“Since the meeting in June, we have reviewed the status of the engineering design and the highway program for the region. I am pleased to inform you that based on the status of the engineering design and funding availability, the NE Region will schedule a project that constructs an interchange at the intersection of US 141 and WIS 64 in calendar year 2014,” the letter stated.

It concluded, “Between now and 2014 the region will continue to monitor the intersection and address any issues that arise. We look forward to working with Marinette County and other local officials as we work to improve the safety at this intersection.”

Among those at the meeting in addition to Berg were Bousley, County Highway Committee Chair Russ Bousley, Coleman/Pound area Supervisors Ken Casper and Jerry Pillath, Coleman Village President Glenn Woulf, Pound Village President Kevin Schutte, Town of Pound Chairman Jerry Heroux, State Representative Jeff Mursau of Crivitz, and Lt. Jim Albright of Marinette County Sheriff’s Department
