John Kasten John Robert Ervin Kasten, 94, of Gillett died Monday, July 26 at the Shawano Medical Center.
Born Oct. 28, 1915, son of Frederick “Fred” and Mathilda “Tillie” (Bahrke) Kasten, his parents both died the same night with typhoid fever when he was only 2 years old. The family was then separated with each child going to live with a different relative. His mother’s sister, Hermine “Minnie” became his mother and when she married Herman Ueker, they moved to Gillett.
He attended Gillett schools, graduating in 1935 and was very active in the sports and music programs. He also delivered the Milwaukee Journal at the age of 15, worked for Bill Hartwig for $8 a month, was Scout master for the Nicolet Area Boy Scouts for two years and earned letters in both basketball and baseball all four years of high school. He loved music and organized a German band and was a Merit Honor Student at graduation.
On Sept. 25, 1937 he married Emma Benter at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Bonduel. She preceded him in death on Feb. 23, 1986. The couple would have celebrated 50 years of marriage.
His working career included being in partnership with Ed Neuman and his Chevrolet Garage; owning a Texaco Service Station on E. Main Street; working at Norcor Manufacturing Co. and owning a restaurant, Kasten’s Soda Grill. He worked at F.W.D. at Clintonville; Linwood, Inc. in Mosling and in 1951 began a 40 year career in banking at the former Gillett State Bank, known today as the Wells Fargo Bank of Gillett.
In 1988 he married Margaret Tanz at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Fall Creek and they celebrated almost 22 years of married life. His civic career included a lifetime membership of the Lutheran Church, Missouri Synod, attending two National Synodical Conventions, many years of involvement in the community life of Gillett, serving as Gillett City Council alder man and president, member of Gillett Civic Club, Revitalize Gillett Inc., and a founding member of the Gillett Area Historical Society. Other special recognition's were Certificate of Appreciation for Valuable Contributions given to the International Lutheran Laymen’s League in 1969, North Wisconsin District of the International LLL for congregational membership representative in 1992, outstanding service for North Wisconsin District, L.C.E.F. in 1992, Oconto County Rural-Urban Recognition in 2002, grand marshal for the 4th of July Parade in 2004, Certificate of Commendation from Wisconsin Governor Jim Doyle at the age of 90 for being the oldest serving alderperson in Wisconsin state history, appreciation of 19 years service to the City of Gillett in 2006 and the Kay Stewart Award for documenting the Bahrke Family Genealogy in 2007.
Surviving are his wife, Margaret; a son, Neil (Judith) Kasten of Norton, Mass.; three stepchildren, Peter Tanz of Kalamazoo, Mi., Anita (Timothy) Gullickson of Eau Claire and Melissa (Jeffrey) Haldeman of West Salem; two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; six step-grandchildren and one step-great-grandson.
Along with his parents and his first wife, Emma, he was preceded in death by his foster parents, Herman and Hermine Uecker and their children, Norman Uecker and Lucille Thompson; a brother, Art Kasten and a sister, Esther, Burmeister.
Friends called from 11 a.m. on Wednesday, July 28 at Faith United Lutheran Church, Gillett until time of the funeral service at 1 p.m. Rev. John Laatsch officiated and interment was in Immanuel Lutheran Church Cemetery, Town of Gillett. Kuehl Funeral Home, Gillett assisted the family with arrangements.
