Marinette 10-0 After 5-4 Victory Over Kingsford

Showcasing their diamond talents to the Michigan side of the 9-team circuit, the Marinette Redbirds moved to 10-0 following a thrilling 5-4 win over Kingsford Sunday. Prevailing in the battle of division leaders, the Redbirds opened up a 3 1/2 game cushion over second place Crivitz in the Wisconsin portion of action with 6 games left to be played.

Sunday’s huge win was keyed by the arm of righthander Cody Bezio and the legs of leadoff swinger Jordan Powers. Bezio registered 12 strikeouts and gave up 4 hits over 7 1/3 innings before handing the ball over to relief hurler Cody Woods for the final 5 outs. While Bezio and Woods took care of things on the mound, it was the speed of Powers that produced the winning run. The quick stepping leadoff swinger scored two of Marinette’s 5 runs, including the game winner on a straight steal of home plate in the 8th inning. Daring move, but one that paid big dividends.

A pair of strong pitching efforts enabled Crivitz to sweep Peshtigo 7-2 and 9-4 for a 6-3 readout. The defending league and playoff champions saw their one-two “Jeff” punch of Baumann and Dorschner kayo the Timbers for 31 strikeouts in the twin win.

You know about Baumann as the southpaw whiffed 13 batters in a 7-2 game one win. The nightcap saw Dorschner move from second base to the hill, where he fanned 18 Timbers over 9 innings in a 9-4 victory.

The McAllister Hunters shook off a season-long skid with a 3-2 and 5-1 doubleheader sweep of Porterfield Sunday. Elsewhere in league play, Felch claimed a 3-2 opening win over Tri-City in a game that went 13-innings while game two was won by Tri-City 10-8.

The season continues to wind down as the league playoff date is slated for Sunday, August 15 at Pedersen Park in Marinette. Three games will be played with the first place finishers taking on the number two teams from the opposite division in the semifinals at 11:30am and 2pm followed by the 4:30pm title game.

Redbirds Slip Past

Kingsford, Now 10-0

Marinette pushed across a trio of first inning runs as they knocked off Michigan Division leading Kingsford 5-4 Sunday. This win was anything but easy as the talented Kings tied the score in the third frame before falling behind 4-3 in the 7th. Over the final two innings, the Redbird defense turned a pair of timely double plays, including a game-ending 6-4-3 effort.

“We came up with big road wins over Tri-City and Kingsford the past couple of weekends. We combined some clutch hitting and good pitching with the running of Powers to stay perfect at 10-0. Our defense came up big at the end with a pair of double plays and right now we are glad to be home for the next 4 games,” Redbird boss Nick Brukardt said.

Marinette jumped out to a 3-0 first inning lead as Powers got things rolling with a single, Jeff Hmielewski walked and Todd Olsen slapped a run scoring single. A ground out off the bat of Steve Campbell along with Mitch Kushava getting hit by a pitch with the bases loaded sent the other two runs home.

The 3-run cushion didn’t last very long as Kingsford answered in their half of the first frame. Evan Neuens drilled a leadoff single then strolled home on Scott Evosovech’s two-run homer. The Kings crowned the plate again in the third frame when Bezio lost his focus and walked four straight batters...Evosovech, Jake Miller, Nate Steber and Frank Prefontain.

The deadlock remained until the 7th inning inning when Marinette took the lead for good at 4-3. Andrew Shaver earned a one-out free pass, stole second base and eventually scored on an infield ground out by Kushava.

Marinette padded their lead to 5-3 in the 8th inning, thanks to the speed of Powers. After getting on base with a bunt single, Powers stole second and moved to third on a passed ball. Sitting just 90 feet from the plate and the pitcher in his windup, Powers didn’t wait long as he raced in with the 5th run on a successful steal of home.

“He is probably the fastest runner I’ve seen in Wishigan baseball...not only fast but quick as well,” Brukardt added.

Trying to protect that slim lead, Bezio saw an error allow Evosovech to reach base leading off the 8th inning before a sac bunt sent him to second. With Bezio running out of gas, it was time for a pitching change as Woods took his place on the mound. Steber greeted the reliever with a RBI single for a 5-4 score before Woods avoided further trouble coaxing Mike Vangas to hit into an inning ending 5-3 double play.

The birds threatened in the 9th inning as Shaver drew a leadoff walk. Unfortunately he went nowhere as two strikeouts and a ground ball ruined the rally.

Needing just three outs to secure the win, Woods and the birds ran into early trouble. Jason Hinds cracked a leadoff single but remained at first base as Woods got the next batter, Joe Hinds, on strikes. The final two outs came compliments of the Redbird defense as number nine hitter Jake Church grounded into a game-ending 6-4-3 double play.

Crivitz Cleans Up

On Peshtigo Twice

Pitching gems by Baumann and Dorschner sparked Crivitz to a doubleheader sweep of Peshtigo 7-2 and 9-4.

In the opener, Baumann limited the Timbers to 2 hits and fanned 13 batters in the 7-2 win. While the veteran hurler quieted the Peshtigo attack, a pair of Timber twirlers couldn’t locate the strike zone issuing 13 walks while fanning just two. Starter Max Finger went 4-plus innings before Eric Grom got the call for the final 3 frames.

Crivitz struck for 4 runs in the opening frame, combining four walks with singles off the bats of Ted Voss and Tom Tomaszewski.

Peshtigo pushed across their first run in the third inning when Joey Sparks singled and scored on a ground out.

The Wolves managed to push their lead to 7-1 over the next two frames. In the fourth inning, Crivitz batters drew five walks with Voss and Jake Johnston scoring. Nick Sterry tallied the 7th run of the game with a 5th inning walk and headed home on a single by Dorschner.

Joey Sparks also accounted for the second Timber run in the 7th with a walk before scoring on an error.

Game two went extra frames before Crivitz claimed a 9-4, 9-inning win. Peshtigo grabbed a 3-0 second inning lead on singles by Cory Grom, Kory Weed and Derek Smith. The margin grew to 4-0 in the third frame when Joey Sparks reached on an error, stole second and crossed the plate on a ground out. Unfortunately for the Timbers, that was the extent of their offense.

Max Hansen singled and scored on an error to get Crivitz within 4-1 in the fourth inning before three more runs were plated in the fifth on singles by Mike Walters, Voss, Johnston and Dorschner.

After loading the bases in the sixth with one out, Peshtigo blew a golden opportunity to move ahead as Dorschner used a ground ball and strikeout to end the threat.

Crivitz finally took control in the 9th inning slapping out five hits to tally 5 runs. Dylan Hanson walked with one out then kept on running as Baumann, Max Hanson and Johnston punched out singles. Leading 6-4, up stepped Dorschner, who ripped a three-run homer for the 9-4 final score.

Dorschner finished with 18 strikeouts and 3 walks during his route going performance.

McAllister Takes

From Porterfield

The one-two McAllister mound duo of Bobby Anderson and Tyler Lorenz limited Porterfield to 8 total hits while sweeping a doubleheader Sunday 3-2 and 5-1.

In the opener, Anderson scattered 5 hits over 7 innings while fanning three to best Porterfield’s Steve Pettit, who also gave up 5 hits and struck out 4.

The Truckers staked Pettit to a 2-0 third inning cushion on back to back run scoring singles by Matt Lund and Chuck Bird.

McAllister came right back in the bottom of the third knotting the score at 2-all. Ryan Suennen lashed a leadoff single and moved to second on a bunt by Jeremy Boone. The strategy paid off as James Hartz singled in Suennen and later scored on a two-out hit by Kyle Watson.

The score stayed at 2-2 until the 7th when the Hunters put together their winning rally. Zach Meyers got aboard on an error and moved up 90 feet on a walk to Boone. That brought up the clutch hitting Hartz, who drilled a game winning double to score Meyers.

The nightcap was all about hard throwing Lorenz and the Hunters. Lorenz recorded 12 strikeouts, walked one while giving up 3 hits in a 5-1 win.

The Hunters put two runs on the board in the third frame when Suennen walked and scooted home on a single by Lorenz. The second run was plated by Lorenz, who swiped third and home.

Two more Hunters headed home in the fifth on singles by Brett Watson and Hartz along with three walks and a hit batsman.

Lorenz lost his shutout bid in the sixth as Matt Jacobs, Justin Borowski and Lund punched singles.

McAllister picked up their final run in the sixth as DJ Stank walked, stole second and third before cruising home on a passed ball.

Billy Betts took the loss yielding 5 runs on 5 hits over 5 innings before Lund toed the rubber for the sixth inning.

Felch And Tri-City

Enjoy Sunday Split

Lane Holsworth reached on a fielder’s choice and eventually scored when Garth Budek’s ball was booted as Felch tipped Tri-City in 13 innings Sunday 3-2. The game one pitching victory went to Dave Holsworth, who came on in relief for the final two frames.

Dave Speaker was the tough luck losing pitcher, allowing just 3 hits over 13 innings. Speaker fanned 10 and did not issue any walks while throwing over “200 pitches”, according to coach Dave Speaker, sr.

Tri-City came back in the second game to post a 10-8 win. Dan Nelson hurled all 7 innings for the win with Dave Holsworth getting tagged with the loss.
