4 Turnovers Prove Costly; Finish 9-2

Putting together one of their finest seasons in nearly a decade, the Wausaukee Rangers (9-2) saw 4 turnovers prove costly in a 48-28 Division 7, Level 2 setback at the hands of state-ranked Clayton Saturday afternoon.

Wausaukee owned its lone lead at 8-0 before Clayton gradually pulled away.

“Although we would have liked to advance further in the playoffs, we were pleased with the things that we achieved this season. It was a great group of young student/athletes to work with,” Ranger boss Pat Edlbeck said.

Offenses were certainly the name of this game as the teams combined for 954 yards, 82 passes, 132 plays and of course, 76 points.

“It was a high scoring game with close to a thousand yards of total offense. Defensively we weren’t able to get any pressure on their talented quarterback and did not make enough plays in pass coverage. You have to do one or the other against a high powered passing game like Clayton employs to be successful,” Edlbeck added.

Sparked by a 359 yard aerial effort from senior signal caller Brett Edlbeck, the Ranger offense more than held its own against Clayton. Wausaukee totaled 462 yards...103 rushing and 359 passing.

Winging the ball on 45 of Wausaukee’s 74 offensive plays, Edlbeck connected 27 times for 359 yards and 3 scores. The Ranger rifleman hit Beau DeLaet 10 times for 64 yards and a score, Ryan Nystrom 9-179, Aaron Schlies 3-89 and a teedee, Joe Jaworski 3-21 and a score, and Cole Lewandowski twice for 7 yards.

Unfortunately for the Rangers, the passing attack had its share of problems as Edlbeck was picked off 3 times, including a 97 yard interception return for points with just 7 ticks left in the half.

“Offensively we were able to move the ball up and down the field with our passing game. Unfortunately, three times we failed to score when we had first down inside their 10 yard line,” coach Edlbeck added.

Defensively the Rangers had their hands full with Clayton quarterback Kyle Larson, who completed 25 of 37 passes for 376 yards and 4 touchdowns. Zachary Schradle (6’3) was his favorite target with 11 catches for 200 yards and two scores, Jordan Gilbertson 7-94 and Matt Gretzlock 6-54.

An interception by Mike Wojnicki set up the initial Ranger teedee. Starting at the Clayton 20, Wausaukee moved to the end zone in 5 plays. Lewandowski tallied runs of 6 and 5 yards, before Edlbeck hooked up with DeLaet from 8 yards out (5:32). Nystrom hauled in the conversion pass for an 8-0 lead.

Following an exchange of punts, Clayton got even on the board with 2:24 remaining in the opening period. The one play drive saw Larson fire a 47 yard scoring pass to Gilbertson with Schradle grabbing the two point pass (8-8).

Wausaukee ran into trouble on its next possession as three plays forced a punt. Edlbeck’s boot never got off as Dustin Ferguson got his hands in the way and blocked it with Clayton taking over at the Ranger 7. On the very next play, Larson tossed a teedee pass to Schradle while Gilbertson was on the receiving end of the conversion.

A fumble recovery enabled Clayton to pry open a 22-8 edge with 3:31 left in the half. Starting at the Wausaukee 48, Clayton used pass plays of 18 and 12 yards to Skyler Henley and Schradle to move to the one. Henley plowed into the end zone on the next play.

Looking to stay close, the Rangers required just 16 seconds to answer as Edlbeck hurled a 65 yard touchdown pass to Aaron Schlies (3:15). Nystrom snared the conversion pass for a 22-16 score.

With the momentum back on their sideline, the Rangers were quickly deflated as Clayton registered two more scores to close out the half on top 34-16.

Clayton moved 70 yards in 7 plays with Schradle on the receiving end of a 16 yard scoring toss (1:15).

Trailing 28-16, the Rangers tried to stay close, mounting a late drive that moved the ball from their own 36 to the Clayton 3 before disaster set in.

Along the way, a roughing the passer penalty along with tosses of 16 and 25 yards to Nystrom left Wausaukee just 3 yards from the end zone. They never got there as Clayton defensive back James Hoffman picked off an Edlbeck pass and raced 97 yards the other way for a 34-16 halftime score (:07).

Clayton continued to apply the pressure, taking the second half kickoff and driving 93 yards in 6 plays for a 41-16 spread (10:08). A 56 yard completion to Schradle put Clayton at the Wausaukee 20 before Gretzlock hauled in the teedee toss.

A fumble recovery by Jared DeLaet gave the Rangers new life at the Clayton 24, allowing Wausaukee to cut the deficit to 41-22. The 6 play drive saw Schlies gain 12 yards on a third down pass to the 11 before Jaworski broke free on a 6 yard scoring reception with 5:54 remaining in period three.

Clayton pushed the lead to 48-22 with 3:19 remaining when Henley scored from 3 yards out and Larson booted the PAT.

With time running out on their season, the never-say-die Rangers hit paydirt with 1:56 left. A five play drive covered 70 yards and was highlighted by a 48 yard pass from Edlbeck to Nystrom down to the Clayton 22. DeLaet grabbed a 14 yard pass to the one before Edlbeck snuck in for the score and that 48-28 finale.
