Name Jason Figas To Fill Wausaukee Trustee Post

With the appointment of Jason Figas as its newest trustee on Monday, May 14, Wausaukee Village Board became even more of a family affair. Figas, son of Trustee Rosie Figas, will fill the seat vacated by Bob Wesolowski, who resigned effective Thursday, April 5. He was the only one to file an application for the post, and was praised by Village President Jeff Townsend as the best person he could think of for a spot on the board.

In his application for membership on the board, Figas wrote, “I am an active member in our community and value its long-term wellness and growth. I earned a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Michigan Technological University and am currently employed at Wausaukee Composites as a project engineer. I am also active in our family business located in the Village of Wausaukee. I volunteer for many community functions and organizations, most notably as a firefighter on Wausaukee Fire Department, where I am proudly fulfilling my third term as the elected Assistant Chief. I believe my professional experiences, community involvement, and positive attitude would make me a valuable asset to your board.”

During the meeting, the board went outside to view the newest Fire Department acquisitions - a new pumper truck purchased with town and village funds, and a new brush truck purchased and equipped entirely through efforts of firefighters, at no cost to the town or village.

Prior to accepting a motion to approve Jason Figas, Townsend told the board he and Clerk Toshia Ranallo had done a little research on the issue. Clerk Ranallo said they had talked with people from the League of Municipalities and explained that potentially half the board would be relatives of the proposed trustee. They were told there is no problem with that, except that a trustee could not vote on possible of a spouse.

With that, Trustee Ann Hartnell, with a second from Trustee Hilbert “Slug” Radtke, moved to appoint Jason Figas to the board. “It looks like I’m the only other unrelated person here,” commented Radtke.

Vote to approve Jason Figas was unanimous, except that his mother, Rosie Figas, abstained. Trustee Kyle Stumbris and Toshia Ranallo are cousins of the newest trustee, Townsend is also a relative, and Trustee John Ranallo, husband of Clerk Ranallo, is related by marriage.

At a long session that started at 4:30 p.m. Monday with a special meeting for updates on the Hwy. 141 project, the board learned that rebuilding of the highway through the village is being pushed back by the state to 2016 due to budget difficulties. “There is no chance now that it can be built in 2014,” a spokesman for Coleman Engineering told board members present for the late afternoon meeting. The board was told Coleman Engineering has been asked to complete their plans now and shelve them in case the work can be done in 2015. Plans currently are to let bids in December of 2015 and start construction in spring of 2016.

Other subjects of that meeting were review of bridge design options, including decorative concrete work at no extra cost, and funding for Streetscape planning being done in connection with rebuilding the highway through the village. Rosie Figas, chairman of the Finance Committee, said only $5,000 had been budgeted this year for the Streetscape planning and design work being done by Stantec, Inc., and bills from that company already total $6,800. Later, at the regular board meeting, it was decided that the Economic Development budget has $10,000 that can be used toward Streetscape planning. Several trustees were upset that they had awarded the contract to Stantec because of local connections and the fact that it has an office in Crivitz but they were billed $2,500 for expenses of a planner who traveled from Minnesota to attend a planning meeting. Decision was that in future these types of consultations will be done via telephone or computer interactions. “We can’t afford to pay him to come here for a two hour meeting,” Trustee Hartnell declared.

“We’re giving this guy $2,500 for a short meeting, and beat our employees over the head for a couple hundred dollars to go to training seminars,” Trustee Hilbert Radtke declared.

A bit later in the meeting the board agreed to send utility employees David and Pam Heritsch to a Treatment Process seminar at Kewaskum at a cost of $530.28, with Rosie Figas casting the sole opposing vote.

In other action, the board approved plans of Jon Mosher to level and fill in an empty lot between Mosher’s Auto Repair and A&M Heating between Hwy. 141 and the railroad tracks after he described the project and promised to be sure everything he does complies with the village ordinance and maintains the functionality of the water flow. Clerk Ranallo said Building Inspector Jane Meisner also will be sure everything is complaint with DNR regulations and runoff requirements. He plans to use the leveled area for parking, and will slope it toward the west and south. He said A&M Heating owners also are in favor of his plan.

Open Book will be from noon to 2 p.m. on Tuesday, May 31, and Board of Review will be on Tuesday, June 19 from 4 to 6 p.m. Townsend appointed trustees Ranallo, Figas and Stumbris to the Board of Review, and reminded them they will need to take on-line classes to become qualified. Townsend commented that in the years he had served on the Board of Review they only had to deal with one person.

Operator’s licenses to sell intoxicating beverages were approved for Michelle Laun to work at Exxon and Mackenzie Bryant to work at Hoover’s.

The board agreed to give discounts for weekly stays at Evergreen Park by giving a seventh consecutive night free, agreed to have the dam fence replaced by Fence Link $3,322 because it has become a safety issue. The price was $80 above that of the next lowest bidder, but they have done work for the village before and they have been good to work with.

Contract for next year’s propane purchases went to Country Style Propane for $1.29 per gallon, which is 50 cents a gallon less than last year. This, Townsend said, equals a $4,000 a year savings.

Picnic tables in the park will again be painted on the end this week with a bright orange stripe to prevent unauthorized “borrowing”. Radtke said he had seen one the previous day taking “an unauthorized trip from the park,” and it was returned. There are provisions for residents to borrow tables, but arrangements must be made at the Village Hall prior to taking them or anything else from village property.
