Riverside Cemetery To Focus On Vet Graves

The Monday, May 14 meeting of the Peshtigo Riverside Cemetery Board of Trustees was highlighted by a presentation from Bev Doucette of Marinette on the requirements and procedures for looking after the military-issued headstones of veterans. The requirements are a part of state statute and every cemetery is obligated to care for them.

In Riverside, Doucette noted that the cemetery caretakers show great compassion for caring for the stones and the entire burial grounds, but she noticed there are some veteran headstones that are not yet in compliance with statute. Usually this comes about because of the nature of grass to attempt to over-grow the ground-level flat headstones or because of the effects of gravity on the heavier stones to sink a little and become unlevel or worse yet, to fall over. The age and make up of some of the veteran’s headstones also lend to the growth of moss or erosion, she said.

Doucette explained that she has background and experience with the location and restoration of veteran’s headstones and she is willing to coordinate the effort at Riverside. She spoke of some of the ways that have developed to clean and preserve headstones in poor condition. Many simply require cutting back the growth of the grass and others require more significant work, like leveling of the stones by placing gravel or a cement block foundation beneath the current stone. Other veteran headstones could require more extensive work to repair the ravages of time.

Doucette and the board of trustees hope to gather a group of volunteers willing to survey the entire cemetery and locate all the veteran graves. Some of the military stones in the cemetery belong to veterans all the way back to the Civil War. The next step would be to develop a plan to clean and restore the headstones in need. Doucette noted the cemetery staff has done work on some of the stones already.

Since these are military-issued headstones, there is a program in place through the Department of Veterans Affairs to reimburse the cemetery for special and normal work done on veteran graves.

The board appreciated Doucette’s presentation and intends to concentrate on the issue. Anyone interested in helping locate and restore/clean veteran graves should contact the Association president MaryLou Richter at 715-582-1035.

After a great deal of discussion, the trustees confirmed the quote from Frank’s Logging to remove a couple of deteriorating trees and to trim some suspicious and troublesome branches on another tree. Frank’s was also chosen as the trimming service for the cemetery for this year.

Further enhancements planned by an Eagle Scout project were also approved. The enhancements include a small scout plaque for the post and bench project. The placement of the plaques, was in keeping with past precedence.

A thorough review of the two bids received on the development of a possible website for the cemetery took place. The bid from UES computers was selected. Trustee Dave Zahn will work with UES through the process. A special meeting may be called in the middle of summer to preview what the website will look like. The present plans call for the website to include what might normally be expected on a cemetery website, like directions, By-Laws, contact information, cemetery charges, rules and regulations, and a section for images.

The trustees approved the development of job descriptions for the sexton and assistant sexton. The current sexton and assistant will begin the process by writing down all of the things they currently do.

An item of correspondence brought up a question on graves and burials, especially when it comes to permissions and survivorship. Sexton Joel Guay explained the current process and procedures.

Other items of correspondence included a request on burial information from Yakima, WI, and a note from a former Peshtigo resident who read in the paper about the Memorial Day service and questioned whether her uncle was buried in the cemetery.

Guay reported that he and John Garon have been accommodating family requests to have the sand/dirt pile removed from the grave area for a committal. He noted that several have expressed their appreciation for this provided service.

Association treasurer Don Richter reported there is currently $197,000 in the perpetual care endowment funds, and they provide the cemetery with just over $400 per month for care of the cemetery. An additional $3,732.39 will be added to the next Perpetual Care CD that comes due. As of May 14, the cemetery checking account showed a balance of $32,246.79.

Guay reported that the river drawdown started May 15 and that after about a week, the river level will be too low to draw water for cemetery needs. He added that the cemetery should be fine as long as the water barrels are kept full and adequate rain falls. The city is willing to drop off water when needed. He said people have been very understanding of the situation. Guay was given board approval to proceed with the purchase of a new chainsaw since the current unit, which is over 20 years old, has bitten the dust.

The trustees also continue to consider ways to raise money for much needed road repair/replacement in the cemetery. About $90,000 was discussed as a goal for this project.
