$100,000 Bond In Drug Robbery

Jason Charles Baker, 30, N3050 Seward Heights, Peshtigo, will have an adjourned initial appearance with Council on four felony charges resulting from the May 31 armed robbery of the ValuCare Center Pharmacy, 1435 Main St., Marinette, owned by Steve Wilke. It will be held at 8:45 a.m. Thursday, June 7, before Marinette County Circuit Court Judge James Morrison who set a cash bond of $100,000 at an initial hearing held Monday, June 4.

The court also ordered he have no possession or consumption of drugs or alcohol, no driving motor vehicles, no firearms and no prescription drugs without a valid prescription.

Baker faces charges of armed robbery, theft of movable property less than $10,000, vehicle operator fleeing an officer and first degree recklessly endangering safety.

According to the complaint, Marinette Police received a 911 call at 3:11 p.m. Thursday, May 31, reporting an armed robbery at the pharmacy.

Vicki Lange, an employee, told authorities that Baker came into the pharmacy holding a knife with a three or four inch blade. He asked for three drugs and informed her she had 30 seconds to get the drugs. The pharmacist took several bottles of Adderall pills and placed them into a box and gave it to Baker who then left.

Lange, the pharmacist and another person left the store after Baker and observed him get into a vehicle. They got the front license plate number and noticed there was no rear license plate. The vehicle then entered Main St., across from the Fire Station. It was reported 906 capsules of Adderall pill were stolen amounting to $5,660.06.

A passing motorist, Richard Tessier, was driving on Main St. at the time when he heard yelling from the pharmacy parking lot. The Baker vehicle almost struck his car. He then made an emergency 911 call and began following the Baker vehicle. According to the complaint, Tessier followed the vehicle which ultimately drove across the Interstate Bridge into Menominee, Mich. Enroute Baker did not stop for traffic control signals.

In Menominee, according to the complaint, Baker turned around at the intersection of the CVS Pharmacy and McDonald’s and went back onto the Interstate Bridge. A Marinette Police Officer who was on patrol was advised of the robbery and that Tessier was following the Baker vehicle.

The officer observed the speeding Baker vehicle and when it passed him the officer activated the emergency lights and siren on the squad car and began pursuit. A second officer used his squad car to block one lane at the intersection of Main St. and Hall Ave. Baker drove towards the parked squad car and then turned going around the squad car. At the time there were two children with fishing poles that Baker drove by.

According to the complaint, the first officer continued to pursue down Hall Ave. The Baker vehicle was traveling at speeds of 80 miles per hour in a 25 mile per hour zone. Baker continued to the roundabout on Highway 64 and County Road T and drove through across the center portion and continued on Highway 64.

At that time several squad cars were in pursuit with emergency lights and sirens activated. At the time Baker was traveling in excess of 100 miles per hour.

Baker then went over the Peshtigo Bridge on Highway 64 and when he came to Rehms Road, braked, turned left and was unable to negotiate the curve. The vehicle left the road and went into a yard stopping in a garden. He was immediately arrested by the pursuing officers and taken to the county jail.

Inside the vehicle, officer found several bottles marked Adderall with markings put on by the pharmacist which identified them as taken during the robbery.

According to the complaint, Baker admitted the robbery to police and taking the rear license plate off his car. Enroute to Marinette he had been about robbing the pharmacy and did so about one hour later. He had parked in the pharmacy for about 20 minutes before donning the jacket with a hood leaving his leather jacket in the vehicle. He also put the knife in the hooded jacket.

Baker told authorities had had been using pills for about six years when a friend got him hooked on cocaine. He stopped using cocaine. Later he was introduced to Op’s and used OP 80’s which are an oxycontin, a narcotic and had multiple sources to obtain he drug, according to the complaint. Also lately he getting small amounts of liquid methadone which he injected with a needle.
