Redbirds Soar Into First Place Sparked by another superb pitching performance from southpaw Aaron Woods along with a sweep of Gillett Sunday, the Marinette Redbirds soared into first place in the Wishigan League with a 4-0 readout.
Woods was nearly unhittable in a 6-2 win over Felch Wednesday, striking out 20 batters, walking 3 and giving up 3 hits over 9 innings.
The Redbirds, 6-4 overall, kept their hitting shoes on Sunday stopping first year entrant Gillett 5-2 and 11-5 to open up a game lead over second place Crivitz and Felch.
Elsewhere in league play, Felch handed Crivitz its first league loss 6-5 while Escanaba tripped up Tri-City 4-3.
The Kingsford at Menominee clash was not played and might end up being a forfeit as Kingsford only had 6 players available.
Wishigan action this week begins Wednesday with Crivitz heading to Menominee (7pm) and Felch taking the hike to Escanaba.
Marinette travels to Shawano in a non-league outing while on Sunday the Redbirds head to Tri-City (3-2) for a 1pm clash.

As Redbirds Roll 6-2
Southpaw Aaron Woods was back on the mound Wednesday night and recorded his second straight 20 strikeout performance in the Redbirds 6-2 win over Felch. Woods fanned the side in the first, third, sixth and seventh innings.
Marinette made the most of 9 hits and 8 walks to spark the offensive attack. Number three and four swingers, Jason Hofer and Adam Francour, punched out two hits each as did number nine batter Cody Woods.
Aaron Woods was outstanding again. He took a lot of pressure off of our defense with the 20 strikeouts and our offense knew we only had to score a couple of runs to win, Redbird coach Nick Brukardt said. Jason Hofer and Adam Francour had key hits for us in the fourth inning.
The birds pushed across two runs in the second inning as Cody Bezio reached on an error, Todd Olsen and Steve Oman walked before Mitch Kushava and Cody Woods lashed singles.
Hofer singled, stole second and scored on a single by Bezio for a 3-0 lead in the third inning before Marinette tacked on 3 more runs in the fourth.
Sending 9 batters to the plate, Marinette saw Kushava get hit by a pitch, JP Powers and Jordan Rasner walk while Hofer and Francour added RBI singles.
Felch waited until the 9th inning to score as Garth Buddek walked, Mike Miller singled, Barry Holsworth was hit by a pitch, Luke Holsworth added a fielders choice to go along with a wild pitch.

Redbirds Knock
Off Gillett Twice
Overcoming a first game 2-0 third inning deficit, the Redbirds knotted the score in the fifth then pushed across three unearned runs in the sixth to top Gillett 5-2.
Game two was more to Marinettes liking, building up an 11-2 lead before holding off a late Gillett rally.
Gillett had us on the ropes in the first game, but then Cody Bezio settled down after the third inning and finished with a two-hitter. The second game we hit the ball hard and were able to build up a big lead, Brukardt added.
Three walks, an error and a single by leadoff hitter Les Hilberg sparked Gillett to a 2-0 third inning lead in the opener. Hilberg lashed a safety, but was forced out at second base on a grounder off the bat of Mitch Champagne. An error on third sacker Francour followed by walks to Jared Henne, Tyler Woodke (RBI) and Mason Mergener (RBI) plated the runs.
Marinette finally got on the board in the fourth inning when Bezio walked, Aaron and Cody Woods singled while Powers drew a bases loaded free pass.
Jason Hofer singled, stole second, moved to third on Francours single and scored on Bezios groundout for a 2-2 deadlock.
The Redbirds finally grabbed the upper hand in the sixth with 3 unearned runs.
Aaron Woods walked, Powers reached on an error, Cully Falkenberg singled and another miscue by third baseman Alex Ziesmer put Hofer on base. Bezio capped the uprising with a two-out, two-run single.
Looking to put the game away in the 7th, Bezio whiffed Blair Hicks to start the frame, before Hilberg slapped his second single and Champagne walked. No problem as Bezio buckled down and got Ziesmer to groundout and Henne on strikes to end the clash.
In game two, the Redbirds made the most of 8 hits and 9 walks to collect an 11-5 victory. Francour and Aaron Woods (3 RBIs) keyed the offense with 2 hits each while Powers and Francour scored twice each.
Francour opened the second inning with a single and scored on a hit by Woods, while 3 Redbirds crossed the plate in the third. Powers and Hofer drew walks before Francour unloaded a two-run double.
The pesky Powers walked with two outs in the fourth and scored on singles from Falkenberg and Hofer.
Gillett used back-to-back doubles by Tyler Woodke and Luke Yogurst to close within 5-2 in the fourth inning before the birds tallied 3 more runs in the fifth.
Bezio singled, Dustin Kovar walked and Aaron Woods launched a two-run triple. Aaron Woods scored on a groundout by cousin Cody Woods.
One hit, 3 walks and a hit batsman resulted in 3 more runs in the 7th. Jordan Kinney was beaned to start the frame, while Mitch Kushava and Chad Rasmussen walked. Cody Woods singled in one run, Powers drew a bases loaded free pass before Todd Olsen added a sac fly.
Not going down without a fight, Gillett got to relief pitcher Cody Woods for 3 runs in the final frame.
With two outs, Hilberg reached on an infield single, Champagne walked and Alex Ziesmer got aboard on an error. A bases loaded walk to Henne, single from Woodke and another bases loaded pass to Yogurst produced the runs.
Mitch Kushava earned the mound win with 4 innings of 2 run and 2-hit ball. Reliever Cody Woods allowed 2 runs on 2 hits with 3 strikeouts and 4 walks over the final 3 frames.
Former Oconto Falls fastballer, Jared Henne, fanned 10 over 5 innings before giving way to Alex Ziesmer and Woodke.
Crivitz Upended By
Felch For 1st Loss
Mustering up 10 hits wasnt enough as Crivitz suffered its first Wishigan League loss Sunday 6-5 at Felch.
Now 3-4 overall, the Wolves were paced by 3 hits and 2 RBIs from Max Hanson, Kory Weed with a double, single, two runs and 2 RBIs while Jake Johnston added two singles and a pair of RBIs.
The Wolves grabbed a 2-0 first inning lead as losing pitcher Jordan Hardy singled, Weed doubled, Jake Johnston lofted a sac fly and Hanson added a run scoring single.
The lead grew to 4-0 in the fourth inning on singles by Weed, Jake Johnston and Hanson.
Felch scored one run in the fourth and fifth frames then took the lead with 4 runs in the 6th. Barry Holsworth ripped a two-run double while Wade Holsworth and Mike Miller chipped in with sac flies.
Trailing 6-4, Crivitz inched closer in the 8th as Kyle Johnston opened the frame with a single and raced home as Cody Wolfs grounder to third was misplayed.
Hardy yielded 6 runs (5 earned) on 7 hits and 8 walks over 5 1/3 innings. Reliever Cody Wolf fanned 4 and gave up 3 hits over the final 2 2/3 scoreless frames.
Mike Miller opened for Felch and left after 2 1/3 innings allowing 4 runs on 6 hits with one strikeout. Wade Holsworth earned the win, fanning 9, giving up 4 hits and one run over the final 6 2/3 innings.
