Clarence L. Ceres

Clarence L. Ceres, 91, of Stephenson, Mi. passed away on Saturday, June 30 at the Luther Home.

Born on July 27, 1920 in Blue Island, Ill. to the late Edward and Gertrude (Rose) Ceres, on Sept. 27, 1940 he married the former Elizabeth Burrell in Harvey, Ill. She preceded him in death on July 24, 1993.

On Jan. 8, 1943 he was inducted into the United States Army Air Force where he served in the Pacific Theatre during World War II as a B-29 gunner, receiving numerous medals including the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Purple Heart. He worked as an estimator for Whiting Corporation in Harvey, Ill. His greatest joys were bowling in the winter and golfing in the summer. A member of the Hazel Crest United Methodist Church in Hazel Crest, Ill., he also belonged to the Oak Forest Masonic Lodge #832 of Oak Forest, lll. and Masonic Lodge #269 in Menominee, where he served as Worshipful Master and Mason of the Year in 2001. He was a member of the Scottish Rite of Free Masonry, member of the Shrine, Knights Templar and Order of the Eastern Star. He was also a member of the Military Order of the Purple Heart, D.A.V. of Menominee and Mid County VFW Post #5966. He moved to The Town of Lake 16 years ago and became known to many as “the man with the big red dog”.

Survivors include a daughter, Cheryl Hargrove of Stephenson, Mi.; two granddaughters; five great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; a sister, Betty (William) Young of St. Louis, Mo.; a brother, Edward (Marion) Ceres of Danville, Ill. and close friends, Keith Casselbury, Melissa and Sean Heimbach and Roland and Harriet Demeuse.

Along with his parents and his wife, Elizabeth, he was preceded in death by a brother, James Ceres and his in-laws, William and Elizabeth Burrell.

Family and friends may call at Anderson Diehm Funeral Home, Stephenson, Mi. on Thursday, July 5 from 3 p.m. until time of military rites at 4 p.m. with Masonic service and funeral service to follow. Rev. Jim Mathews will officiate and burial will be in Bethesda Cemetery, Daggett, Mi. In lieu of other forms of sympathy the family requests donations be made to the Menominee Animal Shelter in his name.
