KC Crivitz Council Awards Scholarships

The Crivitz Knight of Columbus Council 4671 offered two $450 scholarships to Lacy Kroll in the Crivitz School District and Corban Mosher in the Wausaukee School district. They were asked to write an essay on “What Patriotism Means to me”. Several students from each applied. In reading the essays the judges said they could tell the students that took the time to apply for the scholarship had a true understanding of what patriotism is. With the Fourth of July approaching we would like to share the two winning essays with you.

Corban Mosher wrote:

“Patriotism is a core part of what it means to be an American and for me it is also a lifestyle. My father has been in the Army and the National Guard for nearly his entire life, and I have seen him leave the country multiple times to fight for mine and every Americans right to live in a free country. I have known since I was little of the freedoms I am privileged with and the sacrifice that it takes to be able to enjoy them. I have heard my father mention friends that have sacrificed their lives and often when memorials of lost Wisconsin troops are on TV they contain familiar men.

“Having patriotism is what signifies us as proud citizens who respect what others have sacrificed on our behalf. It is also more than this though. Having patriotism shows that I believe in the ideals our country was founded on. I believe that all men and women are created equal and all humanity deserves the same inalienable rights. I firmly stand in the belief that everyone is allowed to be different and to live freely; whereas, in many other countries there is no choice in what to believe or how to live. I am very proud and grateful for this and patriotism is the embodiment of that gratitude.”

Lacey Kroll in her essay stated:

“Patriotism means a lot to me because I feel it is very important to have pride in your country. We should all be proud to be from America because this country has come so far from where it began because of all the great people we have had working for it. I respect all of the great presidential leaders, but I have great gratitude for the people in uniform. It amazes me that these men and women are so brave as to put their life on the line to defend where they come from and the people there. That, to me, is the ultimate form of patriotism, because they show enough pride and love for their country, that they would risk their own life to be able to make a difference for it.

“Of course not everyone is cut out to be in the military. People can be very patriotic in other ways, even if it is as simple as saluting the flag and showing respect and gratitude towards veterans. I feel patriotism is very important to teach to young children as they are growing up, not only in school, but in the home. It is very important to teach children of their heritage, and the real meaning behind those Independence Day Parades with all the flashy floats and free candy. Teaching this helps children see the importance of such events and why they should feel so fortunate to be there celebrating it.

“With both of my grandfathers having been veterans, I was taught the true meaning of patriotism from a young age. I am very pound to have come from such a noble background and hope that I too, can find my way to help my country, even if it is as simple as writing solders overseas or sending care packages, which I have done, or volunteering to help any fellow American who is in need. I feel anyone can show patriotism by lending a helping hand to make this country a better place for everyone to live in.”
