Marinette Notches Pair Of Wins During 5-Game Week

Completing a busy 5-game stretch, the Marinette Legion team came up with a pair of wins to improve its season mark to 12-10 and a North Division leading 5-1.

Marinette outslugged host Peshtigo Wednesday 12-7 before topping Wisconsin Rapids Friday 9-1 in a 9-inning affair.

The losses for Marinette began on Saturday with a 10-6 and 6-1 setback to unbeaten Plover to go along with a 5-4 North Division defeat at the hands of Oconto Falls Sunday.

Marinette will return to Pedersen Park on Wednesday, July 4 hosting Menominee in round two of the “M&M” clashes at 1:30pm.

On Thursday, Marinette will entertain highly touted and top ranked Ash-Port at 7:30pm before hitting the road for games at DePere Monday (5:30pm) and White Lake Tuesday (6pm).

Marinette Holds

Off Peshtigo 12-7

Despite stranding 12 runners, Marinette Legion had enough offense to turn back host Peshtigo Wednesday 12-7.

Marinette overcame an early 2-0 deficit to lead 8-2 in the fourth frame then added 3 more runs in the 6th for a 12-2 spread.

It looked like an easy win until Peshtigo rallied for 4 runs in the 7th inning to make things interesting.

“We played decent and the kids never gave up, as evident by the 7th inning rally. Marinette hit the ball hard and left a number of runners on base,” Peshtigo coach Geoff Sparks said.

Max Hipke paced the 14-hit Marinette attack with 3 singles and 4 runs scored, leadoff swinger Aaron Pettit went 3-5 with 2 runs, winning pitcher Mike Mergener 2-4 with 4 RBIs and Trent Mehlberg 2-4 with 2 runs and 3 RBIs.

Joey Sparks slapped out a pair of singles for Peshtigo while Brandon Barrette and Tyler Marquardt crossed the plate twice each.

One swing of Marquardt’s bat put Peshtigo up 2-0 in the first inning. Barrette drew a leadoff walk then headed home as Marquardt launched his two-run shot.

Marinette trimmed the deficit to 2-1 in the second frame when Hipke walked, moved to third following an error, single by Pettit before scoring on Mergener’s fly ball.

Five more Marinette runners crossed the plate in the third inning on 5 hits and a walk. Austin Belonga opened the frame with a walk, Luke Kelly singled then watched Hipke, Mehlberg and Ty Bebo lashed consecutive singles with one out. After Pettit went down on strikes, Mergener added a two-out double for a 6-2 lead.

Marinette was back in the scoring mode in the fourth as Kelly and Hipke singled while Mehlberg laced a two-run double to left.

The lead grew to 9-2 in the fifth when Pettit reached on an error on rightfielder James Brabant and motored home on Mergener’s second double of the game.

Peshtigo answered in its half of the frame with one run on three walks and a hit. Trevor Bero walked to start the inning then was joined on the sacks by Nick Sparks (walk). Both runners moved up on a wild pitch before Bero headed home on a groundout off the bat of Barrette.

Walks to Hipke and Mehlberg along with singles off the bats of Pettit and Scott Eldredge pushed Marinette’s lead to 12-3 heading into the seventh.

Peshtigo wouldn’t go away quietly and put together one last rally. Sending 8 batters to the plate, Peshtigo erupted for 4 runs on 3 walks and 2 hits to score 4 runs.

With reliever Jake McMahon the hill, Matt Borkovec, Barrette and Joey Sparks drew walks. Tyler Marquardt singled in Borkovec while a wild pitch and two-run single by James Brabant plated the final three runs.

Kelly, Marinette Slip

Past Wisconsin Rapids

Luke Kelly fired a 6-hitter over 9 innings as Marinette knocked off Wisconsin Rapids 9-1 Friday night.

Getting ready for the post-season, the teams decided to play a 9-inning affair and Kelly was the star fanning 3 and walking 3. He took a shutout into the 7th inning before giving up a RBI single to Ben Schmid.

Aaron Pettit, Kelly and Jake McMahon slapped out 3 hits each while Scott Eldredge and Nate Kallestad added a pair of safeties.

After Pettit singled and scored on Kelly’s hit in the opening inning, Marinette netted 5 runs in the fourth frame to go up 5-zip. Trent Mehlberg ripped a two-run single, while Pettit, Kelly and Eldredge added run scoring hits.

Marinette Drops

Twinbill To Plover

Taking on one of the elite teams in the state, Marinette dropped both ends of a doubleheader at second ranked Plover Saturday 10-6 and 6-1.

In the opener, Marinette owned a 3-0 lead heading into the bottom of the third and 6-2 moving to the home half of the fifth, before faltering.

Plover pushed across 5 runs in the bottom of the fifth then added 3 insurance runs in the sixth for the 10-6 win.

A RBI double by Eldredge and run scoring groundout off the bat of Belonga put Marinette up 2-0. Three more runs headed home in the fifth on a RBI double by Eldredge, two-run double by Kelly and McMahon’s single.

Austin Belonga took the loss giving up 7 runs (6 earned) on 7 hits with 2 walks and 4 strikeouts.

Game two saw Plover register 5 runs in the first inning on its way to a 6-1 win. Austin Schulfer went 3-4 for the winners with a home run.

Austin Wright, a weekend call-up from the jayvee team, walked 6, yielded 6 hits and 6 runs over 4 innings.

Marinette’s only run came in the sixth when Pettit walked and scored on a two-bagger by Belonga.

Marinette Edged

By Oconto Falls

Going up against hard throwing Mike Nompleggi of Oconto Falls again, Marinette dropped its first division clash Sunday 5-4.

Nompleggi faced Marinette 3 times during the high school season, winning one, while splitting a pair of Legion outings.

Sunday afternoon Nompleggi gave up 3 hits, 4 runs, fanned 8 and walked 9 during a 7 inning affair.

His mound counterpart, Jake McMahon, was nicked for 5 runs on 8 hits with 3 walks and 6 strikeouts.

Singles by Eldredge and Hipke put Marinette up 2-0 in the first inning before host Oconto Falls answered with 3 runs in their half. David Drews, Jacob Mogged and Tyler Magnin lashed singles while Nompleggi aided his own cause with a RBI double.

Ty Bebo walked and scored in the fourth inning for a 3-3 deadlock.

A two-run single by Magnin put Oconto Falls on top for good in the fifth inning 5-3.

Marinette did put together one final rally in the 7th but could only get within 5-4. Mike Mergener and Eldredge walked while Hipke added a two-out RBI single.
