Joseph E. Magnuson

Joseph E. Magnuson, 93, a resident of Whispering Oaks Care Center in Peshtigo, passed away there on Thursday, July 5.

Better known as Tamarack Joe, he was born Feb. 13, 1919 in Cook, Minn. to Oscar and Hilma (Peterson) Magnuson. As a boy he loved skiing in the hills of Minnesota and left his home in Cook to enter the United States Army at the age of 23.

A World War II veteran, he served from Oct. 6, 1942 to Sept. 23, 1945. While in the army he served in the European-Asiatic Theater as an anti-aircraft artillery gun crewman. After the war he moved to Elgin, Ill., where he worked in the Streets and Sanitation Department. Prior to his retirement, he settled in Wausaukee and worked in the woods and in saw mills, retiring in 1982 from Mueller's Saw Mill.

Surviving are nieces and nephews, Pat (Gene) Sebero of Porterfield, Gloria (Steve) Kafka of Wausaukee, Laura Vertz (John Frendreis) of Skokie, Ill. George (Karen) Vertz and Vern (Julie) Vertz, all of Wausaukee, David (Barb) Vertz of Crivitz and Stanley (Bev) Vertz of Shawano; cousins, Bonnie (Sam) Pajaei of Cook, Minn., Merry Beth (Jay) Bengry of Neguanee, Mi. and Sharon (Harold) Prewhella of Palmer, Mi.; 23 grandnieces and nephews and numerous great-grandnieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death were his parents; two sisters, Margaret Vertz and Ida Magnuson; nephews, Ronald and William Elmer Vertz and a brother-in-law, Elmer Vertz.

Visitation will be held at Messar Funeral Home, Wausaukee on Friday, July 20 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., with a memorial service to follow at 6 p.m. Full military honors will be provided by the Polomis-Tahlier American Legion Post #150 of Wausaukee. A full military burial service will be at 9 a.m. on Monday, July 23 in Cook, Minn. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made, in his name, to VFW Post 1752, Cook, MN or Polomis-Tahlier American Legion Post #150, Wausaukee, WI.
