Redbirds Stay Perfect, Now 6-0

Sparked by another dazzling mound performance from southpaw Aaron Woods, the Marinette Redbirds remained on top of the Wishigan League race with a 9-1 road win over Menominee Sunday. Woods threw his strikeout pitch past 15 batters while allowing just 2 hits over 7 innings.

Now 6-0 in the 8-team circuit and 10-5 overall, Marinette owns a game lead over second place Felch (6-2) while Crivitz and Gillett share third place with 4-4 readouts.

Speaking of Gillett, the Firecats turned some heads around the circuit after taking both ends of a doubleheader from Crivitz Sunday 2-1 and 6-4.

Elsewhere in league play, Tri-City claimed a 4-3 win over Felch in the opener before falling 10-9 in the nightcap.

League games slated for this week find Marinette hosting Crivitz and Menominee heading to Escanaba on Wednesday.

Saturday’s action finds Kingsford visiting Marinette at 1pm and on Sunday, Tri-City travels to Menominee.

Redbirds Make Most

Of 4 Hits To Earn 9-1

Win Over Menominee

Combining 4 hits with 9 walks sparked the Redbirds to a 9-1 Sunday win over host Menominee. The birds fluttered their wings for 2 runs in the first inning then added 3 run outbursts in the fourth and 8th frames to win going away.

“We got another solid performance from Aaron Woods with 15 strikeouts, two hits allowed and 7 walks,” Redbird coach Nick Brukardt said.

Aaron Woods whiffed the side in the first, second and 7th innings while being nicked for a run in the fifth. Cousin Cody Woods, who hurls from the right side, fanned 3 batters and walked a pair during two scoreless innings of relief work.

Marinette jumped on losing pitcher Brian Bell for a pair of runs in the opening inning. Jordan Powers opened the game with a single, moved to second on a fielder’s choice, stole third before racing home on a single off the bat of Jason Hofer. Rasner eventually made his way across the plate on a sac fly by Dustin Kovar.

Despite not getting a hit, Marinette upped its lead to 5-0 in the fourth. Cody Bezio and Kovar drew walks, while an error on third baseman Cody Uecke enabled Cody Woods to get aboard.

The floodgates stayed open as shortstop Matt Lund booted Cully Falkenberg’s grounder scoring Bezio. Ryan Johnson was hit by a pitch, Powers reached on a fielder’s choice and Rasner drew a bases loaded walk.

Menominee put its lone run on the board in the fifth on a n one out walk to Brett Edlbeck and a single by Nate Hofer.

Marinette answered in the sixth as Rasner walked and raced home following a sacrifice fly by Adam Francour for a 6-1 spread.

The final 3 Redbird runs came in the 8th on just one hit. With one out, Powers and Rasner walked while Jason Hofer drilled a sac fly to right. After Francour walked, Aaron Woods aided his own cause with a two-run single.

Gillett Surprises

Crivitz In Sweep

The Firecats, the newest league team which is comprised of players from Oconto Falls, Coleman and Gillett, pulled off a mid-season surprise with a 2-1 and 6-4 doubleheader sweep at Crivitz.

In the opener, Gillett could only muster up 4 hits, but it proved to be enough to back the two-hit pitching of Luke Yogurst. The Gillett hurler fanned 8, walked two and yielded two hits.

Lucas Markiewicz lashed a pair of singles for Gillett while Tyler Woodke and Mason Mergener added the other hits.

Crivitz grabbed a 1-0 first inning lead on a double by Jordan Hardy and a fielder’s choice from Max Hanson.

Gillett tallied two runs in the fifth on singles by Markiewicz and Mergener followed by an error at second base.

Jeff Baumann was tagged with the loss giving up 2 hits, 2 unearned runs with 6 strikeouts and no walks.

In a see-saw second game, Gillett broke away from a 3-3 fifth inning deadlock to register a 6-4 win.

The Firecats saw Mergener reach on a fielder’s choice and race home on an error in the second inning for a 1-0 lead.

Crivitz came back with 2 runs in the third on bases loaded walks to Kyle Johnston and Alex Zielinski.

Gillett regained the upper hand at 3-2 in the fourth as Tyler Woodke and Mergener singled with Woodke scoring on an error. Mergener raced home to put Gillett up on a fielder’s choice by Derek Ziesmer.

The Wolves used singles by Kyle Johnston and Hardy to knot things up at 3-all in the fifth.

Gillett tallied 3 runs in the seventh with two outs as Alex Ziesmer singled, Yogurst walked, Woodke ripped a double and Mergener added a run scoring single.

Crivitz didn’t go down quietly in its half of the seventh as Jake Johnston drew a bases loaded walk to score Zielinski for that 6-4 final score.

Woodke started for Gillett and allowed 2 runs on one hit with 7 walks, 3 hit batsmen over 2 1/3 innings. Les Hilberg added 2 2/3 innings of 5 strikeout and 4 hit ball before Jared Henne pitched the final two innings.

Baumann suffered the mound loss again, allowing 6 runs (4 earned) on 5 hits with 4 walks and 2 strikeouts.

Home Runs Spark

11-1 Win Over Plover

The Redbirds pounded out 9 hits, including back-to-back home runs by Powers and Rasner in the fourth inning, to spark an 11-1 victory over visiting Plover Friday.

Marinette jammed the plate for 7 runs in the inning then added 3 more in the sixth to win via the rule.

Cody Woods lashed a pair of singles for Marinette while the big blows came from the two smallest hitters, Powers and Rasner.

Powers pounded a 3-run shot in the fourth with Kovar and Cody Woods on base while Rasner followed to nearly the same spot one pitch later.

The end result was a 7-0 lead and control of the game. Other hits in the big uprising were singles by Francour, Kovar and Cody Woods.

In the fifth inning, Aaron Woods drew a leadoff walk and scored following a single and wild pitch.

Taking a 8-1 edge into the sixth, Marinette sent 8 batters to the plate and scored 3 more runs. Bezio and Todd Olsen walked to start the rally, Chad Rasmussen launched a two-run double and Aaron Woods added a RBI single.

Former Menominee Legion and Marinette Redbird standout, John Javenosky, paced Plover (15-6) with 2 hits and scored the only run. Steve Pettit, who played for Marinette Legion, fanned two Redbirds during a scoreless sixth inning relief role.
