Peshtigo Legion Finishes Regular Season At 8-10

Issue Date: July 18, 2012

It might have only been a so-so season with wins and losses, but the Peshtigo Legion team had plenty of fun during an 8-10 campaign which concluded Tuesday night.

Putting together an impressive 6-4 readout in the North Division, Peshtigo finished in third place behind Marinette (8-1) and Oconto Falls (8-2).

Peshtigo closed out the regular season winning one of three games. The local Legion gang fell to Oconto Falls 5-0 Thursday, topped Northern Door 5-4 at home Monday before falling 7-6 to that same team on the road Tuesday.

Peshtigo will open A tournament play in Marion on July 25.

Peshtigo Bats Silent

Against Nompleggi In

Loss To Oconto Falls

With hard throwing Mike Nompleggi on the mound, the Peshtigo bats were silent in a 5-0 loss to Oconto Falls Thursday.

Nompleggi, who is headed for the UW-Whitewater baseball team in the fall, fanned 10 Peshtigo batters and walked one during a 3-hit complete game performance. He struck out the side in the fourth inning and recorded a pair of whiffs in the first frame.

The only safeties for Peshtigo came on singles by Tyler Marquardt in the first inning, Joey Sparks third and Nick Sparks in the fifth.

Oconto Falls gave Nompleggi all the support he needed in the opening frame...one run on two hits.

John Thompson walked to open the frame, David Drews cracked a single and eventually scored following two fielder’s choice grounders and a single by Cody Nielsen.

In the third inning Oconto Falls used 3 singles to tack on 4 more runs. Thompson reached on an error in leftfield, Drews walked while Jacob Mogged, Nielsen and Cole Krumrei added hits.

Zack Neumann worked 4 innings and allowed 5 runs on 5 hits to absorb the loss. Jordan Berth gave up 2 hits in 2 innings of relief.

Late Rally Sends

Peshtigo Past

Northern Door

Pushing across 4 runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, Peshtigo upended visiting Northern Door Monday 5-4.

Peshtigo was held to one run and 5 hits through 5 innings before putting together that game winning rally.

Coach Geoff Sparks saw his troops take a 1-0 first inning lead as Joey Sparks drew a one out walk, stole second and raced home on a double to right center off the bat of Tyler Marquardt.

The visiting Chiefs took over the scoring pace for the next 4 innings, highlighted by the booming bat of slugging Cody Giesseman. The number three hitter belted a solo homer to left in the fourth inning then added a two-run shot to right center in the fifth for a 4-1 spread.

Heading into the bottom of the sixth, Peshtigo sent 9 batters to the plate and scored 4 runs on five hits to regain the upper hand.

DJ Koronkiewicz and Trevor Bero opened the frame with singles. After Koronkiewicz was caught stealing third, Adam Thill walked and Nick Sparks added a run scoring single. Cody Nielson followed with a two-run triple to left center knotting the score at 4-all.

Peshtigo took the lead one batter later as Brandon Barrette lashed a RBI single to center to plate Nielson. Joey Sparks followed with another single, before the inning ended as Marquardt popped up to third base.

Taking that 5-4 edge into the top of the 7th, reliever Neumann set the side down in order. He got the slugging Giesseman to ground out to short, then used a pair of fly balls to centerfield to end the game.

The final out wasn’t easy as a cemterfielder Joey Sparks crashed into the fence to take a potential double away from Tanner Biwer.

Neumann earned the win with 3 innings of scoreless and hitless relief work. Starter Thill cruised through the first 3 frames before running into the big bat of Giesseman in the fourth and fifth innings.

Marquardt paced Peshtigo with 3 hits while Bero added a pair of safeties.

Peshtigo Tripped Up

By Northern Door 7-6

In another one run game with the Northern Door Chiefs on Tuesday, Peshtigo rallied for 3 runs in the top of the 7th inning before falling 7-6.

Barrette paced the 7-hit attack with a single, double and triple while Nick Sparks punched out a single and double.

A two-run double off the bat of Tanner Biwer put Northern Door up 2-0 in the first frame while an error, single by Cawley Hubner and wild pitch plated winning pitcher Matt Hecht for a 3-0 cushion in the second inning.

Peshtigo closed with 3-2 in the third as Quigley singled, moved to second on a sac bunt by Matt Borkovec before scoring on a two-out single by Marquardt.

The deficit grew to 6-2 in the fourth on singles by Hecht, Griffin Core and Nick Kita while Cody Giesseman added a run scoring double.

Peshtigo continued to battle back as Barrette tripled with one out in the fifth and scored on a fly ball to left field by Joey Sparks.

Down 6-3 heading into the 7th inning, Peshtigo knotted things up. Quigley and James Brabant walked, Barrette ripped a RBI double before two errors tied the score at 6-all.

The momentum from the rally was short-lived as Northern Door pushed across the winning run in its half of the frame. Two errors, single by Zach DeFere and a dropped third strike resulted in the 7-6 loss.
