Pitching Gem Keeps Redbirds In Control

Pitching continues to be the name of the game for the Marinette Redbirds as a nifty 3-hitter twirled by Cody Woods resulted in a 10-0 Wishigan League win over Crivitz Wednesday.

The past couple of weeks southpaw Aaron Woods stole the headlines, this time around it was righthander Cody Woods.

The fireballing Woods set down 8 batters on strikes during a 7-inning complete game win over the Wolves.

The victory keeps the local diamond flock in first place with a 7-0 readout, 1 1/2 games ahead of Felch (6-2).

In the only other two league games played, Menominee came up with a split to sport a 3-4 readout. The Storm topped Escanaba Wednesday 7-1 before falling to Tri-City on Sunday 8-4.

Kingsford was scheduled to travel to Marinette on Saturday, but couldn’t field enough players so the game is being postponed to a later date.

League outings slated for Sunday send Felch to Kingsford and Crivitz over to Gillett.

Perched at 11-5 on the season, the Redbirds will entertain Shawano on Wednesday, July 18 at 7:30pm in a non-league game before taking the weekend off.

Marinette will return to Wishigan League play on Wednesday, July 25 hosting Gillett at 7:30pm and on that same night, Crivitz will take the hike to Menominee.

Strong Pitching Sends

Birds Past Crivitz 10-0

This time around it was Cody Woods that stole the show as the righthander scattered 3 hits over 7 innings to spark the Redbirds to a lopsided 10-0 win over visiting Crivitz. Woods needed 107 pitches (69 strikes) while walking 3 and fanning 8.

“Cody Woods pitched a great game, got ahead of the batters the whole way. Our hitting came around as the bottom of our order finished with 7 hits,” Marinette coach Nick Brukardt said.

Aaron Woods sparked Marinette with 3 hits while Todd Olsen and Ryan Johnson added two safeties each.

Marinette used two hits, a walk and two errors to go up 3-0 in the second inning.

Adam Francour reached on an error and was joined on the sacks by Jordan Rasner with a fielders choice. Following a groundout by Olsen, Aaron Woods and Johnson lined run scoring singles while Jordan Powers got aboard on an error.

In the fourth frame, Marinette punched out 6 hits to score 4 runs and open up a 7-0 spread. Johnson lashed a leadoff single, Powers got on via fielders choice, Cully Falkenberg singled, Jason Hofer ripped a two-run double before Olsen and Aaron Woods capped the inning with singles.

Marinette’s final 3 runs came in the fifth on two hits and another Crivitz fielding miscue. Johnson walked while Powers followed with a single. Following a pair of outs, Francour reached on an error, Rasner walked and Olsen cracked a single.

Cody Woods surrendered two singles to Kory Weed and a sixth inning hit by losing pitcher Jordan Hardy.

Hardy was roughed up for 7 runs (3 earned) on 9 hits over 4 innings before Scott Evosevich and Jeff Baumann added relief help.

Menominee Slips

Past Escanaba 7-1

Cody Uecke tossed a 4-hitter and fanned 7 to spark the Menominee Storm to a 7-1 win over host Escanaba Wednesday. Uecke walked just one batter and gave up an unearned run.

Menominee snapped a scoreless game with 4 runs in the third inning on singles by Justin Borowski and Aron Schroeder along with an error and two-run double off the bat of Taylor Garceau.

The Storm padded its lead to 6-0 in the 7th as Schroeder was beaned while Matt Jacobs and Matt Lund singled.

Borowski opened the inning with a single but was erased at second on a fielders choice by Schroeder. An error, walk and couple of wild pitches plated Schroeder.

Jon Bintner took the loss being separated for 5 runs on 9 hits with one strikeout.

Menominee Doubled

Up By Tri-City 8-4

Registering 6 hits and stranding 14 runners proved to be too much for Menominee to overcome in an 8-4 Wishigan loss to visiting Tri-City Sunday.

The winners jammed the plate for 4 runs in the third inning and 3 more in the fourth to break the game open.

In the third inning, a couple of Menominee errors, walk and singles off the bats of Zack Sorelle and Cody Larson resulted in 4 runs. The same formula was used in the fifth frame, highlighted by a two-run single off the bat of Justin Ludlum.

After being held scoreless for 8 innings, Menominee finally got on the board with 4 runs on 4 walks and a single by Tony Gromala.

Tyler DesJardin earned the mound win throwing 6 shutout innings of 4 hit, 5 walk and 4 strikeout ball.

Brian Bell, the first of 3 hurlers for Menominee, took the loss yielding 8 runs (3 earned) on 6 hits with 6 walks and 6 strikeouts. Brett Edlbeck (2 innings) and Brian Betts finished out the game.

Matt Lund topped Menominee with a pair of singles.
