2012 Middle Inlet Road Work Nearly Complete

Road work scheduled for this summer in the Town of Middle Inlet is getting done so far ahead of schedule that they may even be able to do another project or two this fall, according to Town Chair Richard Wade.

Wade said the Moonshine Hill Road, project, being done as a joint venture with the Town of Stephenson, should be done by Friday, July 27, which is far ahead of schedule. Middle Inlet’s half of the project comes to $120,000, but once it is completed the state will reimburse the towns for half the cost under the state’s Town Road Improvement Discretionary Program (TRID). Wade said if they get the $60,000 reimbursement quickly enough the town board will look at doing one or two additional small road projects before winter sets in.

Sweetheart City Road chip sealing was slated for completion on Wednesday, July 25, and improvements for Pleasant Road and Camp Five Road North are already done.

Sealing of the town hall roof is in progress and should be finished before the end of the week, Wade said.

Fifty new reflective road name signs have been purchased and are being installed, which means that provisions are in place to have the new type signs posted on 80 percent of the town roads by fall. Next spring they will buy signs for the remaining 20 percent and be compliant with the new state sign rules long before deadline, added Wade.

Plans for the Middle Inlet Volunteer Fire Department’s annual picnic on Saturday, Aug. 8 are coming along nicely, Wade said, and thanks to some generous donations many fine prizes will be awarded.

Due to a clause requiring a minimum of 60 days’ notice of an intent to non-renew, the town’s garbage collection contract with Great American Disposal (GAD) has automatically renewed and will remain in force for five years, Wade said.

At a special meeting on Tuesday, June 19 the board had opened bids for curbside trash collection and agreed to accept the lowest price offer, which was from Jim’s Septic Pumping, at $1,550 per year less than the GAD price under their new contract rate, which did provide for a slight price increase.

However, the change in garbage collection companies never happened. Wade said based on advice from the town attorney the motion awarding the contract to Jim’s Septic was rescinded at the next board meeting, which was on Thursday, July 12. Formal action to accept the new 5-year contract with GAD is expected at the next regular meeting of the board, which will be at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 9.

At the July 12 meeting, Supervisor Kenney Van Camp reported two large trees along the east fence of the cemetery were removed.

Supervisor Tony Magerowski reported that the Northwoods Recycling Coalition is soliciting bids for a proposed new building at the Recycling Center site in Crivitz. The Coalition’s next meeting is scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 2.

Wade has been negotiating with Building Inspector Jane Meissner of Nature’s Edge Inspection Agency on the possibility of having her take on the task of issuing building permits for the town. Currently that job is assigned to Clerk/Treasurer Chuck Stanek. Meissner attended a special board meeting on July 17 to discuss transfer of all activities involving issuance of building permits from the town to the Nature’s Edge agency. This would involve some changes to the town ordinance governing building construction and building permits, including those for motor homes and recreational vehicles. Possible new building permit fees were also discussed.

Meissner’s agency was to complete contract wording, coordinated with necessary ordinance amendments. Further discussion and possible action is expected at the Aug. 9 board meeting.

According to financial reports presented by Stanek at the July 12 meeting, total town assets were $292,810, which included $20,574 in fire department savings and cemetery savings of $8,805 plus a $27,000 cemetery CD.
