Late Rally Keeps Redbirds Perfect
Held scoreless for 7 innings, the Marinette Redbirds put together a 3 run rally in the bottom of the 8th to turn back visiting Gillett Wednesday night 3-1.
The come-from-behind victory improves the Redbirds to 9-0 in Wishigan League play and 2 1/2 games ahead of second place Felch (7-3).
The only other game played in the 8-team circuit saw Crivitz take care of host Menominee 9-2.
A full slate of games are scheduled for this week, starting on Wednesday, August 1 when the Redbirds host Menominee at 7:30pm.
Saturdays action finds Marinette traveling to Crivitz for one game at noon while Sunday, August 5 doubleheaders send Menominee to Gillett and Escanaba to Felch.
Tri-City will earn a pair of wins with a doubleheader forfeit from Kingsford, which pulled the plug on the rest of the season.
Woods Fans 19
Tip Gillett 3-1
The Redbirds relied on their winning formula of superb pitching and timely hitting to pull out the Wednesday win over Gillett.
Southpaw Aaron Woods set down 19 Gillett batters on strikes while scattering 5 hits over 9 innings.
Woods struggled out of the gate, giving up one run on 3 hits over the first two innings before settling down. He fanned the side in the second, fifth and sixth innings while recording two strikeouts each in the first, third, fourth and 7th frames. Woods was nicked for just one hit over the final 6 innings.
The Redbirds were quiet at the plate for most of the game as Gillett starter Tyler Woodke gave up 6 hits over 7 scoreless innings.
Marinette finally got its offense untracked in the 8th inning against Woodke as three batters socked out three straight hits to score 3 runs.
Jordan Rasner opened the rally with a double to center then motored home on a run scoring single off the bat of Cully Falkenberg. Up stepped Jason Hofer, who drilled a two-run homer to right for the 3-1 edge.
The birds still werent finished. Adam Francour and Todd Olsen drew walks before Steve Oman and Cody Woods fanned. The final out of the inning saw Francour get gunned down trying to steal third base.
Needing just three outs to close out the win, Woods walked Mason Mergener to open the 9th inning before getting JJ Grischow on strikes, Jordan Hooper and Derek Ziesmer on grounders.
Aaron threw another nice game for us, finishing with 19 strikeouts. We didnt do much offensively until the end, but managed to pull out the win, Redbird coach Nick Brukardt said.
After putting 7 straight goose-eggs on the scoreboard, Woodke ran into trouble in the 7th with the 3 runs. Reliever Henne came on to put out the rally with two walks and a pair of strikeouts.
Hofer paced Marinette with 3 hits...singles in the fourth and sixth innings along with that game winning two-run homer in the 8th.
Jeff Baumann and Scott Evosevich combined for 14 strikeouts as Crivitz cleaned up on Menominee Sunday 9-2.
Baumann worked 3 innings allowing 2 runs on 2 hits with one walk and 6 strikeouts before Evosevich took over. The righthander fanned 8, walked none and yielded 3 hits to earn the mound win.
Jake Johnston sparked the Crivitz offense with 3 hits and 2 RBI, Max Hanson added 2 hits and a RBI, Chuck Bird single, triple and RBI, Evosevich homer, Kyle Johnston double and RBI while Nick Winters lashed two singles, double and drove in 2 runs.
Evosevich put Crivitz on the board with a solo homer in the first inning only to see Menominee answer in its half of the frame. Brett Edlbeck and Cody Uecke walked, losing pitcher Brian Bell lashed a RBI single before Matt Jacobs added a run scoring groundout.
The Wolves took the lead for good in the third inning as Jordan Hardy walked, Kyle Johnston ripped a RBI double and Jake Johnston a run scoring single.
Three more runs were put on the Crivitz side of the board in the fourth inning. Cody Wolf got aboard on a fielders choice, Max Hanson singled and Bird reached on an error.
With the bases loaded, AJ Garcia lofted a sac fly to score Wolf while Winters drilled a two-run double sending Bird and Hanson home.
Singles off the bats of Winters and Jake Johnston produced the final run of the game in the 8th inning.
Edlbeck and Bell topped Menominee with two hits each while Brett Schacht added a single.
Bell worked 5 innings allowing 8 runs (5 earned) on 7 hits with 3 walks and 4 strikeouts. First reliever Billy Betts fanned 4, walked 2 and gave up one run on 3 hits over 3 frames. Matt Lund took the hill for the 9th inning.
