New Village Clock Is Lighted, Operational

That’s not as bad as it sounds. Actually, the Coleman Village Board on Tuesday, Sept. 4 heard the latest on the new clock now installed in the northeast quadrant at the intersection of CTH B and CTH CP. The clock is lighted and operational.

Village President Glenn Woulf told the board that so far 12 donors have stepped forward to help with cost of the clock which should total about $12,000. The area in which the clock is located is slated to have benches, planters and a decorative fence added to make it look like a little park area. Woulf said he is looking for people to donate flowers next year and to care for them as well. The memorial plaques are in the process of being made so if anyone else would like to make a gift to the project, contact the Municipal Building.

A new business will soon be locating at 110 Business 141 in Coleman. Mandy Ruechel informed the village she is opening an AFLAC Insurance Office. AFLAC provides supplemental insurance for individuals and groups to help pay benefits that major medical insurance doesn’t cover. Ruechel’s new business location is next to the new clock.

Other items under new business are granting of an operator’s license renewal to Karen Gilbert at the Shell Station, monthly budget transfers, and the reception of a note from the new Greenstone business thanking the village for the plant at their grand opening.

There were no real reports but much discussion on the process for setting next year’s budget requests. All budget sheets must be turned in before the last week of September so that the Budget and Finance Committee can begin the work of putting together the 2013 budget. In that regard, the Budget/Finance Committee set a meeting for an hour prior to the next Village Board meeting, or 6 p.m. on Oct. 1.

The monthly Police report showed there were 22 complaints dealt with in August. There were three adult citations and 2 juvenile citations issued. The dollar amount of the citations came to $1,633.

In August, there were eight adults in court; two just cause hearings; and one case review. Officer Ida Soletske put in 193.25 hours in the month and Court Clerk Katie Torres had a total of 67 hours.

The Coleman Fire Department responded to three calls during August, including one lift assist, one alarm call, and one controlled burn. The calls totaled 3 hours, with 19 total man hours. Total calls for the year thus far is at 55. The Department training in August focused on the proper use of the pumper and tanker.

The village building inspector said in addition to the usual permit issued, five additional contacts were made. Four of the contacts were on West Main Street dealing with woodpiles, weeds, tarps and missing address signage on the buildings. A more substantial contact was made with a West Main Street resident regarding safety issues on a front porch. Most of the problems were corrected immediately by the owners. The fifth contact was regarding some roofing being done on a building without a permit. The owner explained that a small patch job quickly revealed water damage and more extensive repairs. A permit was acquired the next day.

Building permits were issued to Jesse Parker on Maple land for a new garage; Bob Mongin on East Main to remodel the bar; Kevin Mitchell on Sunset Lane for new siding and stone work; James Heyroth on Elm Street for a new driveway and front steps; and Trinity Lutheran Church on N. Louis Avenue for a new rubber roof over an entryway.

The monthly vouchers totaling $39,664.34 were approved. As of Aug. 31, the Village Financials showed the checking account balance at $43,362.12; the Money Market Accounts at $174,958.02 and $242,510.47; and the total cash on-hand at $460,830.61.
