Robert J. Lauer, Sr. Robert J. Lauer, Sr., age 86, peacefully entered Eternal Life September 9, 2012, at his Elm Grove home, surrounded by his wife and family.
He was preceded in death by his parents Atty. Jerome and Madeline Lauer. A devoted husband, loving father and grandfather, Robert is survived by his wife, Helen (nee Gramling), of 61 years; children Kathryn (Daniel) Caulkins, Susan (William) Childs, Robert (Kathryn) J. Lauer Jr., Joseph Lauer and Mary Elisa Lauer. Grandchildren Rachel, Joseph and David Caulkins; Rebecca, William and Madeline Childs; and Anne, Theresa, Martha, Sarah and Robert J. Lauer III. Also remembered by his sister Mary Ellen (the late Richard) Kessenich and Thomas (Jane) Lauer. Also remembered by many other relatives and friends.
Bob graduated from Marquette University High School in 1943. He enlisted in the U.S. Army and served until 1946, when he joined the family glove manufacturing business. He graduated from Marquette University College of Business Administration in 1959. As president, Bob moved Milwaukee Glove Company from 14th and National to Marinette, WI/Menominee, MI in 1966. He and his family lived in Menominee until their return to Elm Grove in 1997. He is a 1983 graduate of the Harvard Business School Owner-President-Manager Program and served as class secretary.
Primary always was his love of Faith and Family, along with his active participation in civic ventures. He served as lector in his local Holy Spirit Parish and served as president of Marinette Catholic Central High School foundation. He is a member of the Knights of Columbus Bishop Leo J. Brust Council 3702, and Christian Life Community.
Bob's business took him on trips around the world including early forays into China and Pakistan. He was a former director and vice-president of the National Association of Glove Manufacturers. He was a charter member and officer of CIM-SAM (Council of Independent Managers-Society for Advancement of Management), a director of the Marinette Chamber of Commerce and a member of the Kiwanis Club of Elm Grove, Golden K.
Bob was an avid reader and sportsman, maintaining his interests in handball, hiking, fishing and cross country skiing. He took great joy in his annual trips to Isle Royale National Park and the Wisconsin Northwoods.
Bob was an accomplished amateur photographer, an honorary life member and past president of the Photo Pictorialists of Milwaukee and an associate member of the Photographic Society of America. His photographs have appeared in magazines, newspapers and international photographic exhibitions.
Visitation will be held at Becker Ritter Funeral Home, 14075 W. North Avenue. Brookfield, WI on Friday, September 14, 2012, from 4 to 7 PM. The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Mary's Visitation Parish, 1260 Church St., Elm Grove on Saturday, September 15, 2012, at 10:30 AM followed by graveside services at St. Mary's Cemetery, Elm Grove.
