Sadowski Powers Coleman To 7-0 Volleyball Readout

With junior middle blocker Makenzie Sadowski controlling the nets, the Coleman Cougars improved their M-O Conference volleyball readout to 7-0 and one game ahead of second place Peshtigo.

The Cougars needed six games to sweep a home triangular Thursday then overpowered visiting STAA Tuesday to stay unbeaten.

Meanwhile Peshtigo was pushed before earning two wins at the Suring tri-meet and added a 4-set win over host Wausaukee Tuesday to set up a showdown with the league leading Cougars.

Elsewhere on the conference volleyball courts, Niagara sits in third place at 4-2, Wausaukee fourth at 4-3 and Lena fifth with a 3-4 readout.

Sadowski Dominant

As Coleman Wins

Six games was all the Cougars needed to win Thursday’s triangular on their home court.

Coleman made quick work of STAA with a 25-7, 25-10, 25-14 win that saw Raena Chucka notch four blocks and four aces; Abby Bieber with four aces and four digs; Sammy Schaal with eight assists and MaKenzie Sadowski with five kills.

For STAA, Linsey Hannon had 15 digs and four kills while Kristin Sorenson had an ace, seven assists, 11 digs and two kills.

Next, the Cougars dispatched Niagara in three and, just as they had done in its match against STAA, Coleman didn’t allow the competition to get to the 20-point mark in any of the three frames as the scoring went 25-17, 25-16, 25-13.

Sadowski, who played big at the net all night for Coleman led the way with 15 kills and four blocks while Lindsey Kerr had 22 assists and Schaal racked up 7 digs.

Peshtigo Prevails

At Triangular Meet

The Peshtigo volleyball team got two match wins in Thursday’s triangular at Suring. And, while Bulldogs head coach Lynn Kostreva is no doubt happy to pick up the pair of victories, she’s quick to point out an area where her team needs improvement.

“Even though we won both matches, I wasn’t so pleased with the lack of communication,” Kostreva said. “They just don’t talk enough on the court.”

In its first match of the evening, Peshtigo dropped the opening game to Suring 23-25 before winning the second convincingly at 25-14 and the third 25-18.

The fourth game of the match was close but the Eagles came out on top 25-20 to push a final game before falling to the Bulldogs 15-12 in the decider.

Leaders for Peshtigo included Allie Morris with 47 assists and 13 digs to compliment three aces at the line, Taylor Romenesko 22 digs and seven blocks as well as five aces, Shannen Ganter 40 digs to go along with 27 kills and six aces and Hannah Romenesko 23 digs, 16 kills and five aces.

For the Suring, Calley VanBellinger had 31 kills and 17 digs, along with Kelsey School’s 35 assists and 19 digs and Erin Fisher’s 26 digs, three aces and six kills.

Peshtigo defeated Lena 25-11, 23-25, 25-15 and 25-22.

We did play well at the net,” mentions Kostreva when highlighting her team’s strengths on the evening. “The girls covered the floor well also.”

Crivitz Netters Playing

With Heavy Hearts

Clearly, the Crivitz volleyball team that took to its home court for triangular play against the Rangers and the Tigers was not the same squad that traveled to Wausaukee only a week earlier and suffered a quick three-game loss.

The Wolverines, all playing with very heavy hearts and much on their minds as their head coach deals with a personal tragedy and is away from the team, outlasted Gillett in a tough five-game nail biter 25-21, 15-25, 25-22, 20-25, 15-12 before losing to Wausaukee in another closely contested match that went five games 12-25, 25-22, 25-16, 21-25 and 12-15.

“It was close not because we played poorly but because Crivitz played a lot better,” said Wausaukee head coach Tom Pleyte when asked about the difference he saw in the Crivitz team from the August 30th match in Wausaukee and last Thursday’s contest. “The fact that it went five games wasn’t because of our missed serves, it was because they were able to take advantage of things like that due to the fact that they were playing so much better than they were the week before.”

As mentioned previously, the Rangers had seen the Wolverines only seven days and on that night, the visiting Crivitz squad looked quite overwhelmed at times as miscommunication and mishits saw them fall in three straight games.

But on their home floor, with a well of crowd support to draw motivation from, the Wolverines managed to raise their level of play to absorb all Gillett had to offer and come out on top in a back and forth battle in the night’s opener.

The first game went to Crivitz 25-21 but the Tigers came out refocused for game two behind the serve of Kathryn DeJung, who finished the evening with 13 aces. A string of on-target serves from DeJung helped put Gillett out front early 10-5 before the Tigers started started to pull away, thanks largely to strong hitting up front. Crivitz started to get it together again there late in that second game, Vikki Neumann notched two aces in a row to cut into Gillett’s lead to 22-15 but when the Tigers got the ball back, it was Kara Brennan with straight aces to finish off the game 25-15 and tie up the night’s opening match 1-1.

By the third game, both teams had found their rhythm as the score remained even throughout. The Wolverines fell behind midway when an ace from Kelsey Hischke put Gillett up 15-13 but Crivitz came right back on a well placed touch shot from Jen Kempka, a score that seemed to spark the Wolverines while at the same time deflating the Tigers a bit as Gillett lost several of the game’s next points thanks to long serves and unforced errors before losing 25-22.

Crivitz jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in game four thanks to nice serving from Kempka and a block from Star Batten but the Tigers roared back with a big scoring run and by the time Crivitz called the game’s first timeout, their early lead had evaporated and they found themselves on the wrong end of the scoreboard’s read of 12-6.

Following the timeout, it was the Wolverines who began clawing their way back into the lead. An ace from Britany Gorman, a kill by Miranda Beaudry, a block from Batten, an ace from Kempka to get to within three points at 20-17. Crivitz managed to get right back into the game, unfortunately for the Wolverines, the Tigers still had quite a bit of fight left and were able to pull away to take the fourth game 25-20.

The fifth and final game of the opener was just as contested as the rest of the match had been with the two teams trading the lead early on. But an ace from Vikki Neumann to tie things up at 8-8 saw Crivitz take the lead and hold onto it until Kempka, at 14-12 Crivitz, drilled a hard serve that just cleared the net for an ace to give the Wolverines the win over Gillett.

Things didn’t get any easier for the Tigers with Wausaukee up next. The Rangers gave notice of things to come in their opening game of the evening, advancing to a 13-5 lead on quick play and well-placed shots before eventually closing it out 25-19 on a brutal cross-court kill from Lauren Edlbeck.

Gillett tightened things up considerably in the second game as Hischke picked up four straight points with her serve to give the Tigers their first lead against the Rangers at 7-5. Gillett pressed its advantage and forced Wausaukee to call for a break in action down 21-17. From there, the Rangers took control of the game, catching up to Gillett at 23-23 on a run sparked by a big kill from Alyssa Ferrington before eventually squeaking out a 25-23 win for a comfortable 2-0 advantage in the match.

But the near victory in game two proved to be all the Tigers needed to play like predators in game three. They erased an early 4-1 deficit and went on a tear to grab a 15-7 advantage. This onslaught in the third was just too much for the Rangers to overcome and they dropped their first game of the night 25-17.

Just the opposite was the story of game four. A 4-4 deadlock early on got ugly for Gillett when Wausaukee pulled away and then stretched its lead to 19-8 on a kill from Sara Wickman. The Tigers mounted a comeback and got to within striking distance down 20-13 but the arm of Stevie Oldenburg got Wausaukee through the early 20s on the scoreboard where Wickman closed out the match with two straight aces for the 25-13 victory.

The Rangers and the Wolverines then settled in for an exhausting five games. Crivitz continued to prove to Wausaukee that they were not the team of seven days prior as they bounced back from a lopsided 25-12 loss in the opening game of the evening’s final match to claim a 25-22 victory in game two and a statement win in game three at 25-16, one that had to get Wausaukee concerned about their chances for the overall win on the night, before being edged 25-21 in the fourth and 15-12 in the fifth.

“Gillett played us tough also,” said Wausaukee’s Pleyte on the competition his team faced in Thursday’s action. “But the Crivitz match could have gone either way. Completely different team than what we saw a week before.”

Leaders for Wausaukee were Kaylor DeLaet with 37 assists, nine aces, seven kills and a block; Stevie Oldenberg with 23 kills, three blocks, three aces and three assists; Sara Wickman 21 kills, a block, an assist and six aces; Lauren Edlbeck 16 kills, four blocks and two aces.

Leaders for Crivitz include Jen Kempka with 22 assists and two aces; Vikki Neumann 13 kills and four aces and Nikki Zorn six digs.

For Gillett, Mel Meunier had 27 assists to go along with two aces; Kelsey Hischke 14 digs , three kills and five aces; Brianna Lemirande 14 kills and four blocks while Kathryn DeJung two kills, 10 assists and 13 aces.

Sweep Of Cavalettes

The Cougars barely broke a sweat while turning back visiting STAA 25-8, 25-14 and 25-4.

Heather Zeitler topped the winners with 5 spike kills, Sadowski 2 blocks, Abby Bieber 4 digs and 6 aces while Lindsey Kerr chipped in with 9 assists.

Lilly Duffrin tallied 5 kills for STAA, Linsey Hannon 7 digs, Kristin Sorenson 3 digs and 6 assists, Molly Linczeski 4 digs and Riley Schulz 3 aces.

Bulldogs Knock Off

Wausaukee In Four

After splitting the opening two games 25-18 and 17-25, the Bulldogs came up victorious in the final two 25-19 and 25-18.

Hannah Romenesko paced Peshtigo with 13 digs, 11 kills and 4 aces; Nicole Motkowski 17 assists, 6 digs and 4 aces; Taylor Romenesko 11 digs and 7 kills, Allie Morris 15 assists, Shannen Ganter 10 digs and 8 kills.

Kaylor DeLaet collected 18 assists and 4 aces for Wausaukee, Stevie Oldenberg 9 kills, Sara Wickman 8 kills, Crysta Clark 4 kills and 4 aces.

Gillett In Sweep

In a battle of Oconto County teams, Gillett showcased its talents with a 25-19, 26-24 and 25-12 sweep of Lena.

Alex Schmitz sparked Gillett with 10 kills and 4 digs, Kara Brennan 5 kills, Missy Peterson 4 spike kills and 2 digs, Kelsey Hischke 17 digs and 4 aces, Kathryn DeJung 10 assists, Marissa Sherman 5 digs and 6 aces while Mel Meunier chipped in with 12 assists and 2 digs.

Melissa Bushmaker put together a big night for Lena with 5 spike kills, 2 tips and 4 blocks; Liz Salter 4 kills and 6 assists, Jenna Henrichs 4 kills, Kayla VanLanen 4 kills and 2 digs, Holly Blazek 4 assists and Megan Rouer 7 digs.

Suring Sweeps

Crivitz Netters

Calley VanBellinger collected 15 spike kills, 2 blocks and 13 digs to lead Suring to a 27-25, 25-18 and 25-21 sweep of Crivitz.

Stormy Gerndt added 9 kills and 3 digs, Kelsey School 20 assists and 14 digs, Erin Fisher 5 spikes, 6 digs and 3 aces; Breanna Tienor 8 digs, Carley Berg 4 digs and Rachel Sleeter 2 spikes, 2 digs and 2 aces.

Star Batten and Vikki Neumann had 6 spikes kills each for Crivitz, Courtney Kaldenberg 3 spikes, Jen Kempka 3 tips and 18 assists, Britany Gorman and Mirana Beaudry 2 spikes and 3 aces.

Peshtigo Underperforms

At Shawano Invitational

Peshtigo fell victim to inconsistency Saturday at the Shawano Invite, finishing in seventh place out of the eight teams competing.

The Bulldogs won two matches in Shawano, both coming against the Clintonville Truckers at 25-14, 25-22 and 25-18, 25-23. Peshtigo’s losses came against Shawano at 18-25, 16-25; Oconto, the invite’s overall winner, 16-25, 8-25; and then Valders 16-25, 22-25.

Leading the way for Peshtigo on Saturday was Nicole Motkowski's 27 assists, 16 digs, 10 kills and six serving aces, Taylor Romenesko's 17 kills, five aces, five blocks, and 19 digs and Shannen Ganter’s 21 digs, 13 kills and three service aces.

Wausaukee Runs Into

Tough Invite Competition

A long day of volleyball only two nights prior saw the Rangers battle their way through nine games to come out on top in Crivitz for triangular action before coming into Saturday’s tournament action in Algoma where Wausaukee managed to win three games on its way to a tie with Tri-County for third place overall.

“The Algoma tournament allows us to do some things lineup wise,” said Wausaukee head coach Tom Pleyte. “I also think we’ve improved a little bit on how we handle height, figured out a few things we can do.”

The Rangers started Saturday with a 25-115, 25-17 win over Gillett, who they had just defeated in a hard-hitting four game match at Crivitz before running into Algoma, who took top spot on the day with an 8-0 mark, and losing 19-25, 12-25. Wausaukee then dropped two games to Two Rivers 10-25, 23-25 before splitting their pair with Tri-County 25-15, 16-25.

Leaders for Wausaukee were Stevie Oldenburg with 13 kills to go along with two assists, two aces and five blocks; Sara Wickman had 20 kills, six aces and one assist; Charleen Fick had five assists, three kills and three aces while teammate Lauren Edlbeck had 21 kills, two aces and an assist.
