Peshtigo Historical Day Parade, Events Sept. 22

Parade Dictator David Zahn announces the line up order for the Peshtigo Historical Day Parade on Saturday, Sept. 22. Lineup starts at 9:30 a.m. at designated locations furnished to participants. The parade will begin at 10:30 a.m. sharp. Over 70 units have signed up as of Sept. 18. There still is room to enter the parade, Zahn said. He can be reached at 715-938-1296.

The order is Military Color Guard, Sheriff Jerry Sauve, Emergency Rescue Squad, Military Units, Steven Drees Foundation, Peshtigo High School Student Council, Peshtigo High School Marching Band, Class of 62 Pickup Truck, Class of 62 Sports Car, Peshtigo Boy Scout Troop 1054, Peshtigo Cub Scouts Pack 4054, Eagle Express, The Store, Autumn Harvest Farm, Peshtigo Lions, Marinette-Peshtigo Girl Scouts, Judge Jim Morrison, WI Supreme Court Justice Patience Roggensack.

Peshtigo Pharmacy, Five Star Martial Arts, Faith Baptist Church, Fantastic Sams, Area Fire Departments, Marinette County Democratic Party, Democratic Candidates, Lee’s Family Foods, NorthReach Healthcare, Tri-County Dog Training, Thrifty Treasures, A1 Key Plumbing, Jerry Marquardt, RJ Gross Bicycles, Majestic Rubies and Red Hatters, Dennis Klubertanz, Roger Hoheneder, Section 7 Project—Trail of Terror, District Attorney Allen Brey, Peshtigo National Bank, BPM Inc., Cherished Child, Kountry Kids 4H, St. John Lutheran School, UW Marinette.

Perfect Paws, St. Thomas Aquinas Academy, Peshtigo Fitness Center, Rennes Group, Angeli’s Foods, Bay Cities Radio, Marinette County Republican Party, Republican Candidates, Crivitz Masonic Daylight Lodge, Hubert Wiedemeier, Al Ermis, Eagle Herald Publishing, Wisconsin Public Service, Mane Event 4H Club & Someplace Special Ranch, Harding Septic and Portables, John Veriha Trucking, Peshtigo High School Dance Team, Marinette County 4H Royalty, Peshtigo Middle School Marching Band.

The 2012 Peshtigo Historical Day events on Saturday, Sept. 22 from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. are announced.

The day begins with the 24th annual Peshtigo Fire Tower Run/Walk at 8 a.m. at Bulldog Stadium near Badger Park. Participants can choose from three different events, a 10K run, 5K run or 5K walk. Entry fee is $15 before Sept. 20 or $20 on the day of the race. Registration will take place from 6:30-7:30 a.m. with both the 10K run and the 5K run/walk start in front of Bulldog Stadium. Volunteers attend the well-marked course, with time splits given at each mile marker. The 10K (6.2 miles) course follows along the Peshtigo River, through wooded trails to paved country roads and returns to the stadium where a lap around the track completes the event. The 5K (3.1 miles) run/walk course also follows along the river, circling back around Badger Park, and finishes inside the stadium.

A new promotion this year is the Green Sneakers Project. Volunteers are asking for help to obtain 1,000 pair of gently used sneakers in their efforts to raise funds for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Green Sneakers will pay up to $.50 a pound for the shoes. With an average pair of shoes weighing in at about 2 pounds, that’s roughly $1 a pair. Eventually the shoes go to a sorting facility where Green Sneakers staff process the collection, keeping them from the local landfill, and making them ready for distribution to people in need. Shoes must be of the gently used variety, though they may contain holes no larger than a dime, must have the soles and backs intact, and must include the laces. Shoes should be tied together to be sure they stay together throughout the sorting process. They can be taken to the Marinette Civic Center or the YMCA in Menominee. Other future locations will be at Marinette High School and there will also be a location at Bulldog Stadium the day of the race.

Every participant who finishes the event will receive a medal and the overall male and female winners in each event will get a custom plaque. The top finishers in each age group of the 5K and 10K races will receive a homemade apple pie, courtesy of Grandma Ginny’s kitchen. Participants will receive a navy blue dri-fit long sleeve shirt. Availability or correct sizes for the shirts cannot be guaranteed for late registrants. Tortoise and Hare Timing Inc. will provide chip timing and immediate results for all race participants. All participants entered in the event will be eligible for over 60 raffle prizes donated by area businesses.

Sponsors are Berth & Rosenthal Funeral Home, Burger King of Marinette, Country Inn & Suites of Marinette, Culligan Bottled Water, George Webb/Eagle Express, UTC Aerospace Systems previously known as Goodrich, Lee’s Family Foods, Marinette Marine Corporation, NorthReach Peshtigo Family Medicine, Peshtigo Times, Rennes Health & Rehab Center, State Farm Insurance-Rick Thill, Agent, Brothers Three, and Waupaca Foundry.

Additional information or flyers can be obtained by visiting the “2012 Peshtigo Fire Tower Run” Facebook event page or by contacting the race director, Douglas Polomis, 715-735-5249.

Units are expected for the parade starting at 10:30 a.m. Units start lining up at 9:30 a.m. with the route beginning on Oconto Avenue, turning onto Green Street by the Fire Museum to Emery Street and ends in front of the Peshtigo Elementary School. Entry forms can be downloaded from the Peshtigo Chamber website or by contacting Zahn.

Due to some technical difficulties, not every past participant in the parade was mailed an application. Those who still wish to enter the parade can find an application at all of the banks in Peshtigo, Lee’s Family Foods, City Hall, or on the Peshtigo Chamber of Commerce website. Applications have also been printed in the Peshtigo Times and Times Saver. The cost for commercial entries remains at $25 and non-profit, school, community, service or political entries are free. Entries will be received up to parade line-up.

Zahn also announced this is his last year organizing the yearly parade and he is willing to work with whoever wishes to take over the responsibility for next year.

Numerous bouncer inflatable rides from Abra Cadabra of Escanaba will be present for children as well as other activities from noon to early evening. There are unlimited rides with wristband purchase. They will bring the Mechanical Bull, Bunge Jumping, and Space Ball for the older group and will be setting up Kiddy Land for those age 4 and under. The prices are $10 bracelets, $5 for a bracelet for the 4 and under group and .50 cents for tickets
