Last 2 M-O Teams Booted From Playoffs Its all over as the final gun has sounded on the 2012 football season.
After 10 weeks of action on the gridiron, the last 2 M-O Conference teams got the proverbial boot as Coleman and Suring dropped Level 2 home clashes. The Cougars (6-4) were no match for perennial state power Edgar (10-0) in a Division 6 clash 58-0 Friday night while Suring dropped a 29-13 Division 7 outing to Owen-Withee Saturday.
The post-season beating for Coleman was as bad as the final score indicates. Edgar dominated on both sides of the ball and scored touchdowns on offense, defense and special teams.
Edgar is exactly what we thought they would be. Very well-coached, disciplined, physical, and they take advantage of any turnover given to them. Their record is not a fluke, Coleman coach Jeff Bronson said.
At Suring Saturday afternoon, the 9-1 Eagles saw an early lead melt into a 16 point setback to Owen-Withee, which relied on a punishing ground game to chew up the gridiron flock.
We had a great season, had gone further in the playoffs in the past, but never had 9 wins at Suring, coach Mitch Taylor said.
Coleman Clobbered
By Talented Edgar
What was expected to be a mismatch turned into one as visiting Edgar clobbered Coleman Friday night 58-0. The post-season rout saw Edgar produce points via the run, pass, punt return, kickoff return and an interception.
Anyway you look at it, this game was over early.
We talked all week about Edgar forces you to play a perfect game. Turnover and penalty free. We were not perfect. Offensively we gave up the ball too much giving them short field. Edgar is too good to give them the ball that close to the end zone. We needed to make them drive as least half the field, Bronson said.
To complicate things we did not execute anywhere near their level on special teams. Being not the most explosive team and then giving up a punt and kick return added to our hardships.
Playing on a short field for most of the game, Edgar, which had one state titles in 2009 and 2010, owned a 30-0 halftime cushion before tacking on 21 more points in the third quarter.
The stat sheet isnt reflective on the dominance of the unbeaten Wildcats, owning a 193-100 edge in total yards and 9-7 in first downs. The biggest difference came on turnovers as Coleman lost two fumbles and had a pass interception while Edgar pretty much played a perfect game.
Injuries also took a toll on the Cougars as running backs Mason Mergener and Dexter Karban spent time on the sideline while freshman quarterback Blake Margis took over for Trevor Seewald midway through the second quarter.
Despite netting just 100 yards of offense, Colemans best drive came on the first possession. Getting the ball to open the game, coach Bronson saw his troops move from their own 10 to the Edgar 40 before running into problems. The 10 play effort saw Karban carry five times for 20 yards, including gains of 10, 5 and 5 yards to start the series. After reaching the 40, Coleman lost two yards over the next 3 plays, resulting in a punt.
Getting the ball back at their own 26 following an Edgar punt, Coleman went backwards and saw Seewald fumble the ball following a sack with Marshall Stieber recovering at the 18.
Five plays later William Hannemann blasted over from a yard out for the score. David Kornack, a 65, 245 pound tight end caught the conversion pass for an 8-0 lead (2:20).
With the defense forcing a three and out, Edgar made Coleman pay for the kick as Hannemann caught the ball, raced left then handed off to Connor Handrick on a reverse to complete the 43 yard return (0:25). Hannemann hauled in the two point pass for a 16-0 spread.
The deficit continued to grow in period two as Edgar added two more scores.
After watching kicker Kaleb Wolf miss a 20 yard field goal, the Edgar defense stiffened and forced a punt. Setting up shop at their own 25, Edgar moved 75 yards in 8 plays before Kornack grabbed an 11 yard scoring strike from Tyler Kirsch for a 23-0 edge.
With its backfield numbers starting to dwindle, Coleman put the ball into the hands of Mike Carroll for 3 straight runs and 7 yards. Fourth down led to another punt with Isaac Nowaks boot sailing to the Edgar 47 with 1:35 left in the half.
Racing to beat the halftime clock, Edgar saw Kirsch hit Caden Untiedt for 10 yards, Phil Lemmer for 26 to the 11 before spotting Kornack for the touchdown pass.
Facing that 30-zip halftime deficit, things got worse for Coleman in period three as Edgar registered a trio of scores. Hannemann returned the kickoff 75 yards to paydirt, Nehemiah Werner scooted in from 5 yards while Blake Lehman picked off a pass and scampered 40 yards for points.
The final Edgar score came in the fourth quarter as Jacob Joyce raced 5 yards to the end zone.
I was proud that the team kept fighting all game. It would have been easy to quit playing hard after the injuries and the two quick touchdowns in the 3rd quarter but the team did not. Hard to believe, but once Trevor and Mason were hurt, we got younger on the field. We were pretty close to fielding a JV team to begin with, so for the team to keep working says something about their heart, Bronson remarked.
I am hoping that all the younger players noticed that every game we lost this year we were pushed around physically. If a Coleman football team wants to get past the traditional state powers, Edgar, Springs, Stratford for example, we have to get stronger. Strength is one thing that a player can improve on with time and effort.
Season Ends For Suring
With Level 2 Loss 29-13
The best football season in over 45 years for Suring came to an end Saturday afternoon in a 29-13 Level 2 loss to visiting Owen-Withee.
Hosting their second straight playoff outing, the Eagles took a 7-0 lead before getting wore down by the ground game of the Blackhawks.
How effective was the Blackhawk running game?
Just ask the Suring defense, which couldnt stop the ball carriers. Owen-Withee not only controlled the ball, but the game with a 64-46 edge in offensive plays, 382-262 in yardage and of course, 29-13 on the scoreboard.
Tommy Schuh was the workhorse for Owen-Withee with 29 carries for 211 yards and 4 touchdowns while Bryce Niemei added 21 rushes for 114 yards.
They had a blocking scheme we couldnt figure out until late and once Cody Christensen went out with his injury (broken arm), they attacked where he was at on defense, Taylor said.
Despite the tough injury to Christensen, who is their top receiving target, Suring did manage to take a 7-0 first quarter lead. Starting at their own 33, the Eagles gained just 5 yards on three downs before getting a huge break on fourth down when Owen-Withee was penalized for running into punter Blake Strehlow.
Suring didnt waste the penalty reprieve as quarterback Jay Tienor scored on the next play. Dropping back to pass, Tienor scrambled before racing 58 yards down the sidelines for a touchdown. Strehlow booted the extra point as the Eagles went up 7-0 at the 6:15 mark of period one.
The momentum continued to be on Surings side as senior lineman Sam Schaal recovered a fumble on the ensuing possession and raced to the Owen-Withee 34 just two minutes later.
It looked like more points for Suring. Unfortunately for the Eagles, they wouldnt reach the end zone until the fourth quarter and by that time trailed 29-7.
We were up 7-0 and had all the momentum as Schaal recovered that fumble. That was the play Christensen got hurt on...he forced the fumble, but got his arm awkwardly hit. A score there would have really put things in our favor, but they stopped us, Taylor added.
Being forced to punt, the Eagles got another break when Strehlows boot was downed at the Owen-Withee one yard line.
Starting deep in their own territory, the Blackhawks had one goal in mind..get the ball away from the end zone.
They did. Like an 11 play drive that moved 99 yards for a 7-7 tie.
Along the way Owen-Withee converted a fourth and one at their own 11, before watching Tommy Schuh scoot in from 16 yards out at the 10:44 mark of period two. Devin Szpara kicked the first of 3 PATs to even the score.
Schuh made his way to the end zone again with 1:25 remaining in the half on a 10 yard jaunt. The 5-play march started at the Suring 47 and saw Niemi bust loose for 19 yards on first down. Schuh added a 9 yard jaunt and Niemi carried twice to the 10, setting up the score by Schuh.
After a scoreless third quarter, Owen-Withee put the game away with a pair of teedees in the final 12 minutes following interceptions.
An aerial theft by Dylan Giencke with 2:03 left in period three set up Owen-Withee with a first down at the Suring 26. Five running plays later, Schuh motored in from 11 yards out at the 11:30 mark of period four. Szpara split the uprights on the kick for a 21-7 edge.
Szpara picked off the third Tienor pass on the day, leading to Schuhs fourth score on a 10 yard jaunt (5:53) and a comfortable 29-7 edge.
With the outcome no longer in doubt, Suring added a late score as Tienor hooked up with Dan Sweda on a 22 yard pass.
The talented Tienor was pretty much a one-man show with 8 rushes for 85 yards while hitting on 11 of 27 passes for 148 yards, touchdown and 3 interceptions. Sweda snared 4 receptions for 79 yards, Tyler Fisher 3-49 and Dillon Kempen 3-24.
We competed and played okay, but knowing that we could have done even better if Cody wouldnt have gotten hurt is frustrating, Taylor concluded.
