Timberjacks Topped In WSFL Championship Tilt

Making their way to the WSFL championship game for the fifth straight year, the M&M Timberjacks came out on the short end of a 9-7 defensive battle to the Sheboygan County Rebels Saturday afternoon.

The title game loss finishes the Timberjacks at 9-3 while the Rebels capped a perfect 12-0 campaign.

The defenses certainly dominated this 60 minute championship battle as only one touchdown was registered in the game. Instead of making it to the end zone, Sheboygan County relied on the right foot of Lee Rios for a trio of field goals and the win. The last boot by Rios came from 26 yard out with 63 seconds remaining to erase a 7-6 Timberjack lead.

“This is an excellent Rebels team and we went blow for blow with them all day. It was a great game. Somebody has to win and somebody has to lose. Today wasn’t our day, but the character that this team showed is what will endure and will continue to make the T-Jacks contenders for years to come,” Timberjack coach Joe Plautz said. “I told the guys that I couldn’t be prouder of how they laid it on the line, even if we had won.”

Meeting for the third time this season and with the Rebels prevailing in the previous two outings 20-7 and 10-3, Plautz and company knew points would be at a premium. And they were!

The only score of the opening half came in the final minute as Rios drilled a 29 yard field goal for a 3-0 lead. Rios split the uprights again near the 9 minute mark of period three with a 36 yard kick and a 6-0 spread.

After being held in check for most of the game, the Timberjacks finally got rolling in the fourth quarter with a 6 minute scoring drive. Starting at the Rebel 45, the T-jacks put together a 7 play march that was capped on a yard run by Mike Hansen with 5:27 left in the game. An extra point kick by Scott Merzlicker put the T-jacks on top 7-6.

The Rebels responded like a champion and quickly moved downfield to set up Rios for his game winning 26 yard kick with 1:03 left.

Racing the clock, the T-jacks saw tailback Adam Schmit hit Matt LaCanne for 16 yards and Randy Hoheneder for 26 before the clock ran out.

“Last week we laid out the things that we needed to do in order to win. I would say we accomplished about 90% of what we said we needed to do. Our offense didn’t get going until the 4th quarter. We needed to execute better there early on. But our physical effort and heart was there all day. We handled adversity well...didn’t allow them to get into the end zone. We didn’t have a lot of penalties and we didn’t have any turnovers. Sometimes you just come up short,” Plautz added.

Schmit connected on 11 of 15 passes for 117 yards while rushing 13 times for 22 yards. Ryan LaCount gained 9 yards on 5 carries and Hansen 6 of 5 rushes.

Hoheneder was on the receiving end of 5 balls for 36 yards, Joel Wortner 2-44, Ryan Wortner 3-21 and LaCanne 1-16.
