Defending Champion Peshtigo Rolls In M-O Opener 57-16

After putting together back-to-back perfect M-O Conference campaigns, the Peshtigo Bulldogs look like one of the favorites again following a 57-16 whipping of Niagara Tuesday night in the season opener. The key to the lopsided win was defense as Peshtigo allowed just 6 points through three quarters.

Elsewhere around the M-O hardwood courts, Suring, which will battle the Bulldogs for the top spot, clobbered visiting STAA 79-55 as Jay Tienor and Blake Strehlow combined for 57 points, Crivitz rallied past Coleman 55-43 and Gillett leveled Lena 58-23.

The conference will get in another round of boys action Thursday night with a full slate of games.

Bulldogs Too Tough

For Niagara 57-16

Defense and plenty of it.

Peshtigo held the visiting Badgers to one point in the middle frames in claiming a 57-16 win.

Despite some sloppy play, turnovers and missed shots early, the Bulldogs owned a 7-5 spread in the second quarter before 6 straight free throws by Matt Borkovec, Zack Neumann and Jordan Berth sparked them to a 23-5 halftime spread.

The third quarter is where coach Ryan Spaulding saw his troops take control, unloading an 18-1 scoring surge before capping the opening win with a 16-10 run in the fourth quarter.

Junior forward Berth topped a trio of Bulldogs in double figure scoring with 16 points, 8 rebounds, 6 steals and 3 assists; Borkovec added 12 points; Neumann 12 points, 7 rebounds and 3 steals.

Peshtigo made 18 of 49 shots (37%) and turned the ball over just 8 times.

Niagara’s top gun was Jordan Zawada with 10 points and 11 rebounds, Brett Pultz added 3 points and TJ Liebergen 5 rebounds and 3 steals.

The cold shooting Badgers hit on 5 of 33 field goals (15%) and turned the ball over 25 times.

In the jayvee game, Peshtigo claimed a 42-25 win behind 8 points from Marcus Sharkey.

Tienor, Strehlow

Key Suring Rout

Suring used the one-two punch of Jay Tienor and Blake Strehlow to kayo the visiting Cavaliers 79-55.

The reigning player of the year on the M-O courts, Tienor put together a double-double on opening night with 32 points and 13 rebounds while connecting on 14 of 18 shots. Strehlow wasn’t far behind with 25 points (10-18 shooting), 10 rebounds and 4 assists

Suring jumped out to a 23-13 first quarter lead as Tienor burned the STAA defense for 14 points and Strehlow added 6. The Eagles continued to soar in the second frame with a 20-12 surge for a commanding 43-25 halftime lead.

Strehlow netted 9 points and Tienor 8 in a 20-18 third quarter run before the Eagles sealed the win with a 16-12 effort in the final frame.

Dillon Kempen added 9 points and Dan Sweda 8 to the winner’s attack.

Kiefer Powers and Jordan Bardowski topped STAA with 21 points each. Bardowski scored 9 in the first and third quarters while Powers added 9 in the third frame and 8 in the fourth.

Crivitz Rallies Past

Coleman In Opener

After falling behind 21-11 at the end of period one, Crivitz owned the upper hand the rest of the way to knock off Coleman 55-43.

Crivitz was up 30-26 at halftime before outscoring the Cougars 25-17 over the final two frames.

Colton Lange sparked the winners with 24 points, 13 coming in the second half. AJ Garcia and Cody Wolf netted 6 points each and Brad Shearer 5.

Austin Malecki fired in 12 points for Coleman, including 9 in the first half, Jody Styczynski added 11, Brandon Pagel 7 and Jon Salewski 6 points.

Coleman canned six treys in the loss, 3 coming in the first quarter by Styczynski.

Crivitz made it a clean sweep with a 53-39 jayvee win.

Gillett Levels

Lena 58-23

Racing to a 36-9 halftime lead, the Gillett Tigers opened the M-O season with a 58-23 whipping of Lena. The Tigers jumped out to a 21-5 first quarter lead then padded the margin with a 15-4 run in the second frame.

Shane Anderson and Clint Long topped the Tigers with 20 and 18 points.

Lena’s leading scorer was Justin Heimke with 12 points while Roy O’Harrow added 6.

Rangers Run Past

White Lake 84-28

With four players making their way into double figure scoring, the Wausaukee Rangers gave rookie coach John Ranallo a successful debut with an 84-28 pasting of White Lake Tuesday.

Unleashing a fast paced run and gun offense, Wausaukee owned a 44-21 halftime cushion and never looked back.

Leading the Rangers was Zach Orlando with 22 points, Beau DeLaet added 18, Ryan Nystrom 15 and Aaron Schlies 14 points.

Orlando found the mark for 3 of Wausaukee’s six treys, while netting 11 points in the first half.

DeLaet scored 9 points in the opening frame as the Rangers claimed a 26-7 edge. Orlando connected twice from behind the arc in period two and 8 points while DeLaet added 6 for that comfortable 44-21 halftime edge.

A 15-3 spurt in the third quarter was keyed by 4 points each from Orlando, Nystrom and Schlies before Wausaukee wrapped things up with a 25-4 edge over the final 8 minutes. Orlando netted 7 points in the frame, Nystrom and Schlies 6 each.

Kris Gallagher scored 10 for White Lake and Luke Wickersheim 8.
