Lady Bucs Roll To Pair Of Victories

The UW Marinette women’s basketball team already has a nickname for its trio of formidable inside players in Nicole Garbrecht, Lindsey Krajewski and Chyanne Schaut, the Three Musketeers.

The three post players each register at the six foot-tall mark and each figure to be factors in the Lady Bucs’ 2012-13 campaign.

Garbrecht, Krajewski and Schaut have already been playing large for Marinette in the opening week of Wisconsin Collegiate Conference competition as the Lady Bucs have utilized their inside presence en route to an early 2-1 mark in conference play, their only loss so far coming against a Waukesha Cougars team that simply overwhelmed the Bucs with their aggressive brand of defense. The tough loss at home last Saturday was book ended by nice wins against Manitowoc Wednesday and then Marshfield on Monday.

Inside Force Keys

Lady Bucs Victory

Over Manitowoc

The UW Marinette basketball roster features three players this season who are six feet tall. It stands to reason that the trio of Nicole Garbrecht, a sophomore, as well as freshmen Lindsey Krajewski and Chyanne Schaut are going to be factors for the Lady Bucs all year long.

The three UW Marinette paint rovers certainly had a little to say about the teams’ 56-49 win over UW Manitowoc in the season opener last Wednesday. The team was paced by Garbrecht’s 21 points and 12 rebounds. Krajewski added 11 points and 11 boards while fellow freshman Schaut chipped in six points and six rebounds.

UW Marinette’s success against Manitowoc wasn’t limited to its post play though. Freshman guard Gina Gwindt picked up seven points to go along wit five assists while Erin Connor, another freshman guard nailed a pair of three-pointers on her way to eight points.

The Lady Bucs grabbed 59 rebounds to Manitowoc’s 41 while hitting on 21 of 68 field goal attempts compared to an 18 of 63 shooting night for the Blue Devils.

Lady Bucs Overwhelmed

By Waukesha Press 71-53

After falling behind early in the second half last Saturday against perennial powerhouse Waukesha, the Marinette women’s basketball team regrouped to cut the Cougars’ lead to just six points at 53-47 after a hard fought bucket down low by Chyanne Schaut, who missed, pulled down her own rebound and went back up for the score.

Unfortunately for Marinette, Schaut’s basket would be as close as the team would get to the lead down the stretch as Waukesha stepped up the defensive intensity by going with a full court press that spelled trouble for the Lady Bucs, who couldn’t do much in the way of scoring over the course of the game’s last eight minutes and ended up losing 71-53.

That’s Waukesha basketball. They come right at you, said UW Marinette head coach Jeff Sunstrom. They run a nice assortment of presses. We had a hard time with recognition. We had to expel so much energy trying to come back that we just ran out of gas at the end. It was tough but it was a learning experience. The good news is that we won’t see ball pressure like that from anyone else in the league.

Sophomore Nicole Garbrecht did all she could to get the Bucs back into it. The UW Marinette center would time and time again come up with clutch baskets in the paint on her way to 16 points to accompany her five boards but it seemed that, for each one of Garbrecht’s turn around 13-footers that fell, the Cougars were able to answer at the other end to keep the home team in their rear view.

Waukesha’s Alyssa Doll played particularly well, scoring 21 points on a shooting performance that included four out of six made from three-point range, five boards and four assists.

Also contributing for the Lady Bucs in defeat were Lindsey Krajewski with 11 points, nine boards to lead all players and two assists; Chyanne Schaut added 10 points, four boards and an assist while Gina Gwindt turned in eight points, three rebounds and four assists.

I thought, at times, we did a good job tonight, said Sunstrom. Their pressure just took us out of everything we wanted to do. We have to work on our back door cuts, getting open so we can rotate the ball. We also need to work on attacking the basket.

Big Night For Krajewski

As Lady Bucs Roll 77-56

Lindsey Krajewski turned in 20 points to go along with a surgical performance on the glass to finish with 17 rebounds as the Lady Bucs turned a lopsided 39-21 halftime lead into a blowout 77-56 final to hand the visiting Marauders of Marshfield their first defeat of the Wisconsin Collegiate Conference schedule.

And Krajewski’s performance wasn’t the only highlight for the Lady Bucs on Monday. Gina Gwindt out on a lights-out scoring display on her way to 19 points. The freshman guard from Coleman drained five of nine from behind the arc with a hot shooting hand. Kelsey Waloway, another freshman guard added 10 points while Krajewski’s counterpart in the paint, Nicole Garbrecht chipped in 11 points and another eight boards.

After aggressive play saw her foul out early in the second half of last Saturday’s game against Waukesha, Melissa Stone redeemed herself with a solid performance that yielded eight points for the winners.

Kelsey Waloway and Melissa Stone played great games, said UW Marinette head coach Jeff Sunstrom said. Our guards stepped up to the challenge. Our offense isn’t where we’d like it to be but we have the talent to get there.
