Powers, Cavaliers Cruise To Pair Of Cage Victories

Already in mid-season form, junior guard Kiefer Powers fired in 58 points to key non-conference wins over Florence 65-53 and Stockbridge 68-56. The high scoring performance by Powers sparked the Cavaliers to a 3-1 start to the 2012 season.

Elsewhere around the conference courts, unbeaten Suring cruised to victories over Wabeno 68-24 and Oconto Falls 64-41 while the Wausaukee Rangers used fullcourt defensive pressure to turn back Goodman-Pembine 54-35.

A pair of three point shots by Schmidt propelled the Cavaliers to a 10-9 lead at the opening horn, before Powers and company battered the Bobcats in period two 25-11.

Enjoying that 35-20 edge, STAA stayed ahead in the second half despite getting outscored 33-30

Austin Herman lead Florence with 13 points.

In the jayvee game, Florence posted a 49-41 victory.

Suring Slams Wabeno

In 68-24 Cage Rout

The one-two punch of Jay Tienor and Blake Strehlow combined for 39 points to lead Suring to a lopsided 68-24 rout of visiting Laona-Wabeno Tuesday.

Tienor popped in 9 buckets and 3 free throws for his 21 point total while Strehlow added a pair of threes to go along with 6 field goals.

The Eagles opened the game on fire, soaring to a 21-3 first quarter led as Strehlow connected for 10 points on 5 field goals while Tienor added 6 points.

Keeping the offensive pedal on high, Suring padded the lead to 41-9 by intermission, highlighted by a combined four 3-pointers from Dan Sweda and Strehlow.

With the outcome no longer in doubt, Suring capped the win with 27-15 second half charge.

Sweda finished with 11 points while Dillon Kempen added 8 for the winners.

Logan Chrisman topped Laona-Wabeno with 8 points.

Heimke Nets 25,

Justin Heimke tallied 20 of his game high 25 points in the first half, but it wasn’t enough as Lena got leveled by Tigerton 60-37.

Lena owned a slim 14-13 edge at the opening break as Heimke poured in 12 points on two 3’s, a pair of twos and 2 charity tosses. The hot shooting Heimke dialed in a pair of treys in period two for 8 more points as the Wildcats stayed on top 24-23.

The second half was a different story. Putting the defensive wraps on Heimke, Tigerton ran off scoring runs of 20-4 in period three and 17-9 over the final 8 minutes to pull away.

Roy O’Harrow was the number two scorer for Lena with 4 points while Matt and Dylan Marquardt netted 3 points each.

Brandon Severtson paced 4 Tigerton cagers in double figures with 16 points while Tyler Marquardt added 15.

Tigerton also won the jayvee game 39-20.

Powers Tallies 28

To Spark Cavvies

Kiefer Powers continued his high scoring binge with a team-high 28 points in a 68-56 home win over Stockbridge Monday night. Powers did most of his damage from behind the 3-point arc, connecting 7 times while adding on a trio of two-point shots.

In a closely contested first half, the Cavaliers grabbed a 12-9 first quarter lead before both teams lit up the scoreboard for 14 points in period three.

Points continued to be tallied in the third frame in a 24-24 standoff that saw the Cavaliers open on a 11-2 run. Stockbridge answered with a 10-2 surge and trailed 50-47 with 8 minutes left.

Midway through the fourth quarter, Powers drilled a trey as the Cavaliers upped the cushion to 64-52 before using the free throw stripe to wrap up the win.

Jake Hilbreth netted 26 points for Stockbridge.

The Cavaliers connected on a dozen 3-point shots while adding 8-12 free throws.

Sweda Swishes In 21

Points To Key Suring

One of the smallest players on the court made a huge impact as 5’8 Dan Sweda twirled the twine for 21 points to spark Suring to a 64-41 road win. Sweda dialed in on 5 treys, including 3 in the opening period.

Dillon Kempen and Jay Tienor added 14 points each while Blake Strehlow chipped in with 10 points.

Alex Young tallied 14 points for Oconto Falls and Tyler Kowalczyk 11.

Patriots Slip

Past Niagara

A 14-5 third quarter scoring edge proved to be the difference as Goodman-Pembine knocked off host Niagara Monday 53-43. The Patriots (1-1) owned a 23-22 halftime lead before gaining some much needed breathing room in the third quarter.

After battling to a one point game at halftime, poor shooting in the third quarter was the difference, Niagara coach Jim Hoogland said.

Alex Whitt, 6’4 and the son of head Paul Whitt, topped Goodman-Pembine with 12 points, 6’7 Brennan Pierquet added 11 points while Randall Bose and Cody Metras chipped in with 8 points each.

Niagara finished with a 17-53 shooting mark (32%).

Goodman-Pembine won the jayvee game 38-20.
