Tough Start To Season For Coleman Grapplers

The Coleman wrestling squad has started its previous two seasons with losses to Oconto Falls. Each of those seasons, despite the early disappointments, culminated in state championships for the Cougars.

Given that history, no one in the full house of a crowd at Coleman Friday was too somber when the Panthers came to town and, for the third year in a row, handed the Cougars a defeat to kick off the season, this time by way of a 47-20 final score.

"They're very good traditionally," said Coleman head coach Kevin Casper of Oconto Falls. "We're a small school, they're Division Two. It's a good omen. But this one was a little more of a beating that I anticipated but we're not quite at full strength right now. We'll still be looking to have a great season though. It's not about where you begin the season, it's about where you end it."

The evening started with Coleman picking up wins at 126 and 132 as Jensyn Schaal and Marc Lansin each won their matches for a 6-0 edge.

But the flood of Oconto Falls scoring began next with a major decision win for the Panthers' Dewey Krueger over Coleman's Jackson Margis. Up next was the 145-pound bout, which featured the contest's first pin as Oconto Falls' Mitchell Friedman got Kevin Lansin on his back in the first frame ((1:22), resulting in the visitors leapfrogging ahead 10-6 on the scoreboard.

The 152 pound bout was perhaps the night's most action-filled match as Coleman's Trevor Seewald did a masterful job early on against Devin Ault before getting himself into big trouble and eventually pinned at 2:22 in the second period .

Up next was Coleman's Mason Mergener against Brick Cole. The veteran Coleman grappler put on a technical show as he and Cole went back and forth for three periods. Mergener nearly got Cole flat on his back numerous times in the bout and eventually went on to outscore his Oconto Falls opponent 23-8 on his way to a technical fall victory. It was Mergener's 100th career win for the talented Cougar.

Other winners for Coleman included Isaac Nowak at 195 pounds, who pinned Austin Lumaye with a crafty bit of wrestling (0:40) while Derick Teteak got a 9-2 decision over Ben Stoinski at 106 pounds.

Forfeits Spark Crivitz

Over Laona-Wabeno

Six forfeits and 3 pins combined to lead Crivitz to a 52-11 win over Laona-Wabeno Thursday.

After double forfeits at 106 and 113, the Wolverines saw Dustin McNamer pin Nacie Calarco at 126 in 5:12, Billy Retza top John Houts in 2:41 at 145 and Joe Rodriguez put Kyle Merschdorf on his back at 220 pounds in 57 seconds.

Coleman Goes 3-2

At Pulaski Invite

Taking on some early season stiff competition, the Coleman Cougars put together a 3-2 record at the Pulaski Red Raider duals on Saturday.

Coleman beat Mosinee 54-18, Oshkosh West 42-21 and Hortonville 39-23 while falling to Pulaski 36-28 and Two Rivers 40-25.

Four Cougars finished with perfect records on the day...Jensyn Schaal (126), Mason Mergener (160), Dexter Karban (170) and Isaac Nowak (220).

Schaal used 3 decisions, pin and forfeit for his day’s work; Mergener two pins, two decisions and a forfeit: Karban 3 decisions and 2 pins while defending state champ Nowak registered two pins, decision and two forfeits.

“We are a young team and did okay with 3 wins. I really thought the match we could have won was against Pulaski...Two Rivers has a nice team. We are a different team this year with a lot of work ahead of us,” coach Kevin Casper said. “Once we get to the weights we want everybody to be at by the middle of the season, we’ll be alright.”

Two Rivers had 5 wrestlers go 5-0 while Pulaski ended up with a pair of perfect marks.

Crivitz Second At

Home Dual Meet

With Dan Tomaszewski (182) and Joe Rodriguez (220) going 5-0 each, the Wolverines claimed the runner-up spot at their own 6-team dual meet Saturday.

Amherst finished with a 5-0 mark followed by Crivitz 4-1, Elcho and Florence 2-3 each and Marinette 1-4.

Crivitz posted wins over Southern Door 33-31, Florence 42-36, Elcho 51-22 and Marinette 66-12 while losing to Amherst 36-27.

Marinette’s lone win came over Southern Door 36-30 and fell to Elcho 34-30, Florence 34-22, Amherst 60-11 and Crivitz 66-12.

Marinette 170 pounder Jaden Boivin finished perfect on the day as did Hunter Pawelski of Southern Door (126), Elcho’s Donovan Houle (138), Danny Jones and Shawn Paulson of Florence (113 and 120), and 4 Amherst grapplers Josh Powers (145), Loran Hermsen (160), Garth Groshek (195) and Nick Emery (285).

Oconto 4th At

Dual Invitational

Tomahawk claimed first place followed by Crandon, Spencer, Oconto, Shiocton and Wabeno.

Elton Kelsey (106) and Brandon Tousey (152) captured first place finishes with 5-0 marks while John Ensing (113), Blake Bostwick (138) and Dustin Linney (285) ended up third.

Crandon had a trio of unbeaten wrestlers in Morgan Krueger, Carter Shampo and Hayden Krueger.

Peshtigo Winless

At Seymour Meet

It was a rough start to the 2012 wrestling campaign for Peshtigo, going winless at the 6-team Seymour Invite Saturday.

Bonduel won the team title at 5-0 followed by Seymour 4-1, Manitowoc Lincoln and Waupun 3-2, Shawano 1-4 and Peshtigo 0-5.

On the day, Peshtigo fell to Bonduel 70-6, Seymour 54-24, Manitowoc 50-24, Waupun 44-33 and Shawano 45-35.

A total of 15 grapplers put together 5-0 readouts on the day, but none of them were from Peshtigo. Champion Bonduel had Austin Siolka at 106, Travis Wollenberg 120, Derek Liebergen 138 and Joey Tauchen 220.

Gillett-Suring Struggles

At Little Chute Invite

Host Little Chute claimed top honors followed by Wrightstown, DePere, Weyauwega-Fremont, West DePere, Appleton West, Gillett-Suring, Clintonville and Lena.

Top finishers for Gillett-Suring were Garret Kohls and Grant Fischer 4th at 113 and 120 respectively, Hunter Egge 5th at 106 and Zach Moede 6th at 126.

Lena-STAA Falls In

Pair Of Dual Matches

Taking on Oconto and Crandon in a dual meet Tuesday, Lena-STAA came out on the short end twice.

In the 57-15 loss to Oconto, the match featured 9 forfeits, a double forfeit and only 4 bouts.

The two wins for Lena-STAA saw Blaik Fischer pin Bailey McNabb in 49 seconds at 182 while Sam Beschta took care of Adam Schultz at 220 with a 6-0 decision. The other two bouts went to Oconto as Brandon Tousey decisioned Dominique Ramirez 3-2 at 160 and Hunter Thomson pinned Dylan Garrigan in 3:28 at 170.

Crandon used 8 forfeits, a double forfeit and two wins on the mats to post a 58-15 victory. Ramirez suffered a 11-0 major decision loss to Hayden Krueger at 160 pounds and Deven Groff pinned Garrigan in 1:56 at 170.

Victories for Lena-STAA had Fischer pin John Dennee at 182 in 2:40 while Beschta posted a 4-0 win over Grant Murray at 220.
