Suring Visits Peshtigo In M-O Hardwood Showdown First place will be at stake when two-time defending M-O Conference champion Peshtigo entertains Suring in a battle of 3-0 teams Thursday night. The winner of this early season showdown will gain sole possession of the lead and get a leg up on the other 8 teams.
“Suring has all five starters back and without Christensen in the lineup, have been able to develop another player off the bench. They have plenty of leadership and athleticism, but we have been fortunate to beat them the last 4 times,” Peshtigo coach Ryan Spaulding said. “They beat our kids in football, so we need to get off to a good start to be successful. It is early in the season, so whoever wins has the edge, but both teams will meet again later on.”
The battle of the top two conference teams will pit Peshtigo’s stingy defense against the high flying Eagle attack. The Bulldogs will rely on the play of talented juniors Jordan Berth and Zach Neumann while Suring will put the ball in the hands of reigning player of the year, Jay Tienor and his 4 senior teammates. The Eagles should get another boost from Christensen, who returned to the starting lineup in a win over Rosholt Monday.
Elsewhere around the conference hardwood courts on Thursday, surprising STAA will look to improve to 3-1 with a trip to Gillett, Wausaukee travels north to Niagara while Lena heads to Crivitz.
Bulldogs Blast
Crivitz Cagers
Building up a commanding 49-23 lead after three periods, Peshtigo stayed unbeaten in the conference hardwood chase with a 60-43 road win over Crivitz.
The Bulldogs used a “double-double” by junior forward Jordan Berth with 16 points and 10 rebounds while senior guard Matt Borkovec added 11 points to the attack.
Zach Neumann chipped in with 7 points and 4 steals while Levi Sanborn, Gunner Kinney and AJ Woller tallied 6 points each.
The Peshtigo defense registered 21 steals in the game with Kinney leading the way at five thefts. Offensively the Bulldogs connected on 22 of 62 shots (35%), including 6-19 on threes.
We had an off night offensively, but our kids did a good job playing defense and came up with the steals. Mentally we were not ready to go and our shots didn’t fall early. I thought Crivitz played very well and were scrappy,” coach Spaulding said.
Colton Lange and AJ Garcia shook free for 15 and 12 points respectively for Crivitz. The Wolverines found the mark on 15-35 field goals (43%), but saw 19 turnovers ruin any chance for a comeback.
After gaining a slim 10-9 edge at the first break, Peshtigo turned up the pressure on both ends of the court to the tune of a 19-5 spurt. Taking that 29-15 lead into the third quarter, Peshtigo unloaded a 20-9 surge to put the game away.
The jayvee game also went Peshtigo’s way 58-26 as Marcus Sharkey pumped in 16 points.
Balanced Scoring
Keys STAA Win
With a trio of cagers making their way into double digit scoring, the Cavaliers clobbered host Coleman Friday 66-34.
Kiefer Powers and Jameson Bardowski fired in 15 points each while Casey Boyle added 11 points. A total of 10 Cavaliers made their way into the scorebook.
STAA took control early, racing to a 15-2 lead at the first break and never looked back. Bardowski tallied 5 points in the period, including a three, while Powers added 4 points.
Continuing their offensive assault, the Cavaliers extended their lead to 40-15 by intermission as Powers drilled in 6 points and Casey Boyle 5.
Over the final two frames, STAA owned a 28-19 scoring edge.
Austin Malecki was the top gun for Coleman with 13 points, 6 in the second quarter and 7 in the fourth. Miguel Fodoua added 6 and Mike Carroll 5 points for Coleman.
Wausaukee Too
Much For Gillett
With their defense forcing Gillett into 32 turnovers, Wausaukee rolled to a 40-27 conference win Friday.
The Rangers led 12-8 at the first break before opening up a 21-11 halftime spread.
After a low scoring third frame, the Rangers capped the win with a 15-11 spurt in the fourth quarter.
Aaron Schlies popped in 12 points for Wausaukee, Ryan Nystrom 8 while Cole Lewandowski and Beau DeLaet tallied 6 points each.
Clint Long topped Gillett with 12 points.

Badgers Bounce
Goodman-Pembine
After building up a 33-28 halftime lead, Niagara held off a second half charge by Goodman-Pembine to claim a 59-55 victory.
Colin Anderson topped the Badgers with 19 points and 9 rebounds, Zach Zychowski added 10 points and Jordan Zawada 9 points and 10 boards.
Brennen Pierquet fired in 22 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for the Patriots, Trent Heath 17 points, including 11 in the fourth quarter while Alex Whitt scored 10.
Suring Defeats
Rosholt 62-40
Jay Tienor paced a trio of players in double figure scoring as Suring routed visiting Rosholt 62-40 Monday night. Tienor pumped in a game high 16 points, Dillon Kempen added 15 and Dan Sweda 11.
The contest marked the return of senior forward Cody Christensen, who suffered a broken wrist during the football playoffs. Getting the starting nod, Christensen scored 5 points in his debut.
With Sweda tossing in 9 points in the opening period, Suring took an early lead at 19-11. Tienor carried the scoring load in period two with a trio of buckets while Creo VanBellinger and Kempen canned treys for a 33-17 halftime cushion.
Looking to extend that margin, Suring unloaded a 22-17 third quarter run as Kempen connected for 7 points, Tienor 6 and Blake Strehlow 5. Both offenses slowed down over the final 8 minutes with the Eagles holding a 7-6 edge.
Josh Studinski topped Rosholt with 12 points.
The jayvee game went to Rosholt 41-24.
Wausaukee Upends
Crandon In Overtime
In a high scoring hardwood affair Monday, the Rangers (6-1) rode a balanced attack to slip past Crandon 69-65.
Aaron Schlies keyed the Wausaukee win with 19 points, including 13 in the fourth quarter and overtime, James Kramer added 16 while Beau DeLaet and Ryan Nystrom chipped in with 11 points each.
With Kramer finding plenty of room inside the Crandon defense for 8 first quarter points, Wausaukee gained the upper hand 15-10. Both teams fired in 14 points in the second frame as Zach Orlando buried a trey and jumper while Kramer tacked on 4 more points for the Rangers.
Getting through the Crandon defense for some easy buckets to open the third period, Wausaukee ran off a 14-9 edge for a 43-33 spread.
But Crandon didn’t backdown. With the game on the line, Crandon turned steals into buckets and managed to get even at 57-all. After Crandon went ahead 61-60 on a floater by Kory Kincaid, Wausaukee used a three point shot from DeLaet to regain the upper hand. With time running out in regulation, Crandon wasted a golden opportunity to win the game when Kincaid missed a layup with :02 left.
Forced into a 4 minute extra session, Wausaukee used 9 points from Schlies to pull out the win. Schlies hit on 5 of 6 free throws while also adding a twisting drive down the lane to put his mates up for good.
Kincaid sparked Crandon (3-2) with 34 points, including 4 shots from behind the arc. The talented backcourt performer scored 8 points in the first quarter, 4 in the second, 3 in third, 12 in the fourth period and all 7 Crandon points in overtime.
Press Sends Niagara
Past Florence 51-30
Building up a 26-8 halftime lead, Niagara rolled past Florence Monday 51-30.
“Our fullcourt pressure created numerous turnovers and held them to 30% shooting from the floor. We need to do a better job taking care of the ball and shooting it,” Niagara coach Jim Hoogland said.
Zach Zychowski topped Niagara with 13 points, Joey Swanson and Jordan Zawada added 10 each while Zach Walker chipped in with 8.
Niagara made 21-58 shots (36%) and held a 36-26 rebounding edge with Walker hauling down 11 boards. The Badger defense registered 21 steals and forced 35 turnovers, but also committed 28 miscues of their own.
Florence finished with a 12-40 shooting mark (30%).
Lena Tripped Up
By White Lake
Putting together their best performance of the season, the Lena Wildcats (0-6) nearly registered victory number one before falling to host White Lake Monday 31-30. Lena was up 9-6 at the first break and 24-21 heading into the fourth quarter.
Down the stretch White Lake saw Kris Gallagher score 10 of his 28 points to key a 10-6 run. Lena gained a 30-29 lead on a late bucket by Roy O’Harrow before Gallagher was fouled and made a free throw with no time left for the victory.
Justin Heimke sparked Lena with 15 points and O’Harrow added 13.
