More Road Sign Thefts Reported In Middle Inlet

Middle Inlet--After great effort and expense by the Town of Middle Inlet to erect theft-proof Moonshine Hill Road signs in the past year, it appears that criminal elements have turned their attention to more romantic-themed thefts. Town Chairman Richard Wade reported to the Thursday, Dec. 13 meeting of the Town Board that five Sweetheart City Road signs had been stolen in the last month.

Wade added that the thefts have been reported to the Marinette County Sheriff's Department and that town is still offering a $1,000 reward for information which leads to the arrest and conviction of the perpetrators of this crime. While the people who have committed these thefts may see it as victimless, should the Fire Department or Rescue Squad be delayed in responding to a call because the road sign is missing, a person's life may be at stake.

In other matters, Town Clerk/Treasurer Charles Stanek reported the following balances as of Nov. 30: Money Market $171,901.65; General Checking $500; Cemetery Savings $9,2724.30; Fire Department Savings $31,785.80; Town CD $10,000; Cemetery CD $27,000. Ledger disbursements in November were $47,657.14. A major deposit in the month was the deposit of the final installment of transportation aid from the state.

The Board approved Dec. vouchers totaling $71,505.34.

Wade reported that all of the road projects in 2012 have now been completed and paid for. The new snow plower for the town has begun his work. If residents have complaints, they are reminded to give Wade a call and he will pass the information on. Lastly, Wade noted that the in recent weeks the town has had to pick up 13 tires discarded in ditches. If anyone spots someone dumping tires, they are encouraged to call the Sheriff's Department.

The Fire Department reported on the several calls to which they responded in the month, including accidents, a trailer fire, a rollover accident and an active CO2 sensor.

At a recent training session, it was discovered that the Department's current “Jaws of Life” has a very faulty pump and is showing the effects of age. The department has made some inquiries on new and used models that are available. The prices for new units range from $14,000 to $17,000. Used units, which carry no warrantee, are available for about $6,000.

The Fire Department recommends the purchase of a new one, preferring the $14,000 model. All of the available units were demonstrated by the department. The old unit can be used as a 'trade-in.'

Since the purchase was not listed on the agenda, the Board approved holding a special meeting on Dec. 17 to decide the matter. At that meeting, the Board approved the purchase of a used demo cutter (Model SLC-29), the spreader (Model SL-28), and the pump unit (Model BT-6.5) for a total package price of $9,895. This reflects approximately $4,000 in savings over a completely new package.

Supervisor Anthony Magerowski reported that bids for the Crivitz Recycle Center building have been let out. The bid opening will take place on Jan. 7. The planned building, which is being required by the state, will be unheated, and will cost approximately $40,000.

Under Public Comments, a couple of residents noted areas in which the snow plowing people could improve. Wade said he would pass the areas of concern on to the plower. Wade also reminded residents that if they wished to pick up sand for personal sanding use, the pile is located behind the main Fire Department building.
