Maroons Claim 2 Non-League Wins; Drop GNC Opener

In a week of hardwood action that started off with a pair of wins, turned sour Tuesday as the Menominee Maroons dropped their Great Northern Conference opener to Kingsford (1-1) by a score of 61-56.

Poor free throw shooting (4-16) doomed the Maroons, falling to 2-2 on the season and will now head to Marinette Friday for the M&M contest.

After a season opening loss to Peshtigo last week, coach Pete Pericolosi’s troops had things rolling their way with a pair of non-league wins...besting Oconto Falls 75-47 Friday and Superior Central 67-46 Saturday. The double win was sparked by some torrid three point shooting as the Maroons connected on 19 treys in the victories.

Maroons Hit On 12

Treys In 75-47 Win

Over Oconto Falls

Twirling the twine for a dozen three point shots, the Maroons cruised past host Oconto Falls Friday 75-47. Holding the upper hand in every quarter, Menominee raced to a 43-23 halftime cushion before wrapping up the win with a 32-24 charge.

Leading the offensive attack was Jared Rivard with 21 points, Bryan Hines added 17, Travis Champeau and Jared Kleinke 9 points each.

Menominee launched 26 shots from behind the arc, making 12, including 3 each by Rivard and Champeau along with two each from Hines, Devon Harris and Kleinke.

“We shot the ball better, looked a lot quicker than we did against Peshtigo, had our legs under us and outrebounded them,” Pericolosi sad.

Riley Gruetzmacher paced winless Oconto Falls with 13 points.

In the jayvee game Menominee fell 40-37.

Maroons Start Fast

To Bury Superior

Central Sat. 67-46

Putting together a near flawless first half, the Maroons rolled to 67-46 non-league win over visiting Superior Central Saturday. Menominee started quickly and never let up in claiming a 44-13 halftime edge.

“The first half was pretty flawless....used a fullcourt man press, got the lead and didn’t press again, while everyone played,” Pericolosi said. “Superior Central had a big guy inside, but they could never use him as our guards did such a great job defensively.”

The Maroon defense finished with 19 steals and 19 assists.

From the outside, Menominee connected on 7 of 22 three point shots and finished 29-63 for the game (46%).

Hines tallied 22 points in the first half and finished with 25 to lead the Maroons. Champeau added 11, Harris and Zach Budzynski 8 points each.

Top scorer for Superior Central was Matt Verbrigghe with 17.

In the jayvee game, Menominee registered a 43-26 victory.

Free Throw Issues

Hinder Menominee

Free throws can either make or break a team.

Tuesday night it broke the Maroons as they connected on just 4 of 16 charity shots in dropping their GNC opener at Kingsford 61-56.

“It was terrible! We were up by 13 points in the third quarter, but made 2 of 9 free throws in the fourth period and couldn’t hold on,” Pericolosi said.

Another fast start propelled the Maroons to a 22-13 edge at the first break as Jared Rivard and Hines found the mark for a pair of threes each.

Host Kingsford got things straightened out on both ends of the court to run off a pair of 16 point quarters and close within 46-45, including the final 14 points of the third frame. The fourth quarter belonged to the Flivvers by a 16-10 edge to pull out the win.

Jared Rivard and Zach Budzynski tossed in 14 points each for the Maroons while Jeremy Rivard added 12 points and a team high 8 rebounds.

Menominee made 23 of 64 shots (36%) and turned the ball over 11 times.

“The difference was free throws. Kingsford went 7-8 down the stretch and we were 2-9,” Pericolosi said. “Our top shooter Jared Rivard made just 5 of 25 shots and forced a lot.”

The Maroons played without the services of point guard Devon Harris (pulled groin) while Travis Champeau twisted an ankle during the game and Budzynski suffered a knee injury.

Chris Harrington burned the Menominee defense for 25 points, including 11 of 14 free throws. As a team Kingsford hit on 17 of 25 free throws (68%).

Menominee dropped the jayvee game 53-35 as well as the freshmen outing 48-32.
