Bulldogs Burn Blue Devils 58-48
Thursday night the Peshtigo Bulldogs got a reprieve from the mania surrounding their run at a record 45 straight wins in the M-O Conference with a non-league matchup in Oconto with the Blue Devils.
There was no lack of intensity on the part of the Peshtigo squad as the visitors took control at the opening tip-off and went on to win 58-48.
We knew that they (Oconto) are a team that can put points on the board in a hurry, said Peshtigo head coach Ryan Spaulding. So I wanted to keep the intensity up and I thought we did that for most of the game.
The Bulldogs were subjected to a harsh talking to from Spaulding during a timeout in the fourth quarter after the team let a 25-point lead evaporate down to a 10-point advantage. The outcome of game was never really in question during the Oconto run, sparked by tenacious play from Trent Mehlberg, who went on to be the games leading scorer with 19.
But sharp shooting from Mehlberg wasnt enough to overcome the overall effort of the Peshtigo offense. Jordan Berth, one of the conferences leading scorers, turned in 18 for the Bulldogs, followed by 14 from Gunner Kinney and 10 from Zack Neumann.
The Peshtigo cagers played another smart game also as Berth and Neumann both had an effective defensive outing but managed to avoid picking up their first fouls of the contest until late in the fourth quarter.
Its all about being a smart defender, said Spaulding. Understanding where you need to be ahead of time. But then also, when you do get caught in a bad position, to do the best you can without fouling. Make the guy hit a shot. Those two players obviously mean a lot to our team so to keep them out of foul trouble is huge for us.
The Bulldogs were winners of the jayvee contest by a final of 44-41.
