Klegin Tosses In 56 Points As Marinette Earns Hardwood Split
With senior guard Derek Klegin totaling 56 points in two games, the Marinette Marines came up with a split in Bay Conference hardwood action.
Now 7-10 on the season, Marinette whipped Denmark for the second time this season 52-32 as Klegin netted 26 points before coming up short 68-54 to league leading West DePere Tuesday.
In the loss to the talented Phantoms (15-1, 10-0), Klegin shook free for 30 points.
Marinette will host Oconto Falls Friday before traveling across the bridge for round two of the M&M cage clashes Monday in Menominee.
Marines Beat Denmark
To End 5-Game Skid
After coming up short in the past five games, the Marines returned to the winning track with a 52-32 road win over Denmark. The Bay win, the second over Denmark on the season, saw Marinette take control in the second half with a 27-12 scoring edge.
Derek Klegin tallied a game high 26 points for the Marines, Marcus Maguire added 17 and Nathan Kallestad 5.
Ryan Havlovitz netted 9 points for Denmark.
The Marines made it a rare triple win with victories in the jayvee game 49-41 and frosh affair 42-40 in overtime.

In Loss To Phantoms
Despite another big performance by Klegin, the Marines fell to first place West DePere Tuesday 68-54.
Marinette trailed 40-18 at halftime before staging a 36-28 rally over the final two frames.
Klegin did most of his scoring damage in the fourth quarter with 17 of the Marines final 19 points. Marinette did manage to close within 5 points, but couldnt complete the comeback bid.
Austin Wright added 9 points for Marinette, Maguire 7 and Nathan Kallestad 6.
Chandler Diekvoss topped West DePere with 22 points and Jesse Owns added 13.
Marinette lost in the jayvee game 57-35 as well as the freshman outing 68-54.
