Peshtigo Achieves M-O Perfection

It is pretty tough to top this hardwood feat!

For the third straight year the Peshtigo Bulldogs were perfect in the M-O Conference going 16-0 and stretching their league winning streak to 52 straight games.

Peshtigo completed the perfect season with a 50-29 win over Gillett to claim its third straight championship.

During his 5-year coaching stint in the M-O, Bulldog boss Ryan Spaulding saw his teams enjoy plenty of success going 67-13 in league play and 84-30 overall.

“A lot of hard work has gone into being successful and the kids deserve most of the credit. We had our share of big battles over those five years and fortunately were able to come out on top of them,” Spaulding said. “We have always had high expectations and improved our non-conference schedule to reflect that.”

While Peshtigo dominated the M-O circuit again, Suring had to settle for second place with a 14-2 readout and two games behind the champions. The talented Eagles had no trouble with Wausaukee in the M-O finale soaring to a 71-33 victory.

Niagara finished in third place at 11-5, Wausaukee fourth 10-6 and Crivitz went 8-8 to nail down fifth place. The Wolverines closed out league play with a 61-48 road win over STAA Thursday.

Kiefer Powers of STAA paced the league in scoring with 295 points and a 18.4 average while Justin Heimke of Lena was second at 16.5 points per game.

Peshtigo Tames Tigers

For 52nd Straight Win

The Bulldogs completed their third straight perfect M-O campaign with a 50-29 road win over Gillett Thursday. After a slow start, Peshtigo gradually pulled out to a 16-5 first quarter lead and stretched the margin to 29-14 by intermission.

“We took control of the game towards the end of the first quarter as our offense got rolling and we’re not pressured after that. We started in a man defense and later switched to a matchup zone to take away some of their height advantage,” Spaulding said. “Offensively we had a lot of shots rim in and out, but our guards played well and found the gaps.”

Zach Neumann fired in a game high 20 points to lead Peshtigo, 12 coming in the first half while Jordan Berth added 9 points, including 7-10 free throws.

Gunnar Kinney was the number three scorer with 6, Matt Borkovec added 5 first quarter points and Darius Dohl 4.

“We need Zach and Jordan to get close to their averages and then get other guys to step up in order to be successful in the playoffs. I look at the regular season and playoffs as two different seasons, more challenging and if we play well we should be fine. The key for us is our defense keeps us close in games,” Spaulding added.

Neumann, Berth and Borkovec tallied 5 points each in the opening quarter as Peshtigo pried open a 16-5 lead. Neumann and Borkovec found the mark for triples while Berth hit a bucket and 3 free throws.

The Bulldogs continued to limit the Tigers on the defensive end in period two thanks to a 13-9 run. Neumann added his second 3-pointer and 4 free throws while Kinney slipped through for a pair of layups.

Holding that 29-14 halftime edge, Peshtigo tacked on a 21-15 surge over the final two frames to claim the win. The key spurt came in a 15-8 fourth quarter run as Neumann went 4-4 on free throws while Dohl added a bucket and two charity tosses.

Clint Long paced Gillett with 14 points on 3 buckets and 8 of 9 free throws while Shane Anderson added 7 points.

Peshtigo won the jayvee game 60-16 as Marcus Sharkey tallied 14 points.

Suring Starts Fast To

Rout Rangers 71-33

Getting out of the gate quickly, Suring soared to a 25-10 first quarter lead on its way to a lopsided 71-33 road win over Wausaukee Thursday.

The number two team in the final league standings, Suring put 10 players in the scorebook, including 5 producing 8 points or better.

Leading the way was Cody Christensen with a game high 17 points on 6 baskets and 5-5 free throws, Blake Strehlow 12 points, Dan Sweda 11, Jay Tienor 9 and Dillon Kempen 8.

Suring found the mark on six triples in the game, two each by Sweda, Strehlow and Kempen.

In that opening outburst, the Eagles saw Strehlow tally 7 points on a trey and two buckets while Sweda and Kempen twirled the twine twice each from behind the arc.

The best Wausaukee could offer was 6 points from Aaron Schlies on a pair of buckets and two free throws.

It is hard to believe, but that first quarter was just a warm up for coach Gary Regal’s hardwood flock. Leading by 15 points, the Eagles delivered the knockout punch in period two 13-2. Christensen battered the Wausaukee defense for 6 points while Tienor added 5 to key a 38-12 halftime cushion.

Ryan Nystrom had the lone bucket for the Rangers.

With the outcome no longer in doubt, Suring tacked on a 33-21 second half surge. Christensen netted 7 points in the second half while Caleb Geffe added 4.

Zach Orlando hit on three bombs in the fourth quarter to finish with a team high 9 points. Schlies tallied 8 points, 6 coming in the first quarter, while Nystrom and Beau DeLaet added 6 points each.

Crivitz Knocks

Off Cavaliers

After falling behind 10-4 to start the game, Crivitz regrouped and got 18 points from Dominic Basso off the bench to turn back host STAA Thursday 61-48.

Basso did most of his damage from long range with 4 treys, including 13 in the first half to put Crivitz on top 29-20. Ben Fischer was the number two scorer with 12 points, AJ Garcia added 10 and Colton Lange 7.

The Wolverines took their first lead at 11-10 on a pair of three point shots by Dominic Basso along with two free throws from Cody Wolf.

A switch to a zone defense enabled the Wolverines to put the clamps on STAA scoring ace Kiefer Powers and build up a 14-10 lead at the break. Powers tallied 8 of STAA’s first 10 points.

Period two proved to be more Crivitz by a 15-10 margin. Both teams picked up the scoring pace over the final two frames with Crivitz owning a 32-28 edge.

Powers topped STAA with 15 points, Jameson Bardowski added 13, Mike Schmidt 8 and Chase Brumm 6. Schmidt, Powers and Bardowski drilled two treys each.

In the jayvee game, Crivitz posted a 44-30 victory.

Hansen, Malecki Key

56-42 Coleman Win

With Dominick Hansen and Austin Malecki combining for 35 points, Coleman notched its second league win 56-42 over Lena.

The loss was the 52nd straight in M-O play for the Wildcats.

The host Cougars battled their way to a 26-19 halftime led then sealed the win with a 30-23 charge over the final two frames.

Hansen hit on 4 two-pointers, a pair of threes and 5-6 free throws for his 19 points while Malecki added 4 treys and 16 points.

Brandon Pagel and Blake Margis netted 8 points each while Jon Salewski tallied 4.

Justin Heimke was the big gun for Lena with 24 points on 5 twos, two 3’s and 8-16 free throws. Roy O’Harrow scored 8 points and Joe Jagiello 6.

Malecki connected twice from behind the arc and Hansen once in a 13-11 Coleman opening surge. Hansen added 7 more points in period two, including 4-4 free throws for a 26-19 halftime lead.

Five Cougars produced points in the third frame, a 15-12 spurt, as Coleman opened up a 41-31 lead. Heimke finally got rolling for Lena with 10 points, including a trey.

A 15-11 fourth quarter run kept Coleman in control as Malecki hit for 5 points and Pagel 4. Heimke fired in 9 points over the final 8 minutes.
