Letter to Editor:

We are proud to write this letter supporting the candidacy for our friend and former attorney, Judge Jim Morrison.

Jim was our attorney for 10 years. We were very impressed with him from our first meeting. He served our family and business in many matters. Jim provided an extremely competent level of service regardless of the verity of legal issues that we presented to him. These included probate, family business matters, real estate issues, employee issues, estate planning, succession planning with our sons, and a number of other issues.

Not only was Jim extremely competent over the wide range of issues, but he was always friendly, practical and sometimes displayed a great sense of humor to lighten the load. He always made sure we understood our options and prompted us to make the decisions that were in our best long-term interests. Somehow through all of this contact, he also became a great friend. How many people can make that claim about their attorney?

The best endorsement we can give to Jim’s character, integrity, competence and compassion is to say we always felt very comfortable in recommending Jim to family, friends and associates. We were always confident he would represent any one of them to the best of his ability.

We lost a great attorney, but we knew Marinette County would be gaining a terrific judge. All his fine attributes as an attorney would champion him as fair but firm, compassionate and the utmost respectful of the law. Judge Jim Morrison is already a great asset to our county court system. Please join us to give Marinette County the opportunity to experience a judge like Jim Morrison for a full term. I don’t think you will be disappointed.

Voting for Judge Morrison

When I met Judge Morrison, I had retained him as my lawyer for a very complicated, difficult and unusual custody case. I needed a hardworking, no nonsense, intelligent, capable lawyer that wouldn’t back down. I needed someone to fight for me and the future of my children. I found that lawyer in him. Judge Morrison never gave up for two long years. He never once tried to make a quick deal. He and his amazing paralegal worked hard for the best interests of my children. I also found something more in Judge Morrison than just a very capable lawyer. I found a man who really cared about the people he represented and their futures. He understands that it’s not just about what his client has to go through but also what their family has to go through.

He has been there for all the tears and emotional upset that people experience when they have to go through the court system to deal with divorce, loss and custody issues. He was not the first lawyer I have ever retained to represent me, but he was the first lawyer I had that walked out of that courtroom with me and not with the opposing lawyer. He took the time to explain to me what we were going to be up against and what was going to happen. I believe this is why Judge Morrison will continue to make an excellent judge. He listens, he understands and he will explain it to you. I think Judge Morrison is an asset to our community. He doesn’t mess around and he doesn’t waste people’s time and money. He gets to the point and gets things done. He knows the law very well and also understands that people’s futures are in his hands, and doesn’t take that lightly. I also believe that Judge Morrison is more than capable in dealing with any case that comes before him, no matter how complicated it is. I’m fully confident that he judges every case, fairly and just. Judge Morrison has my vote and and I hope he has yours as well. My children, my family and I are thankful for Judge Morrison every day. He is truly a good man, and a great man for the job.

My sister and I were going through a rough time in our lives, a time when I needed help more than ever. When I met Judge Morrison at the the time he was our lawyer. I thought he would look at my sister and I as just another client, but once I got to explain to him the severity of our situation, I felt that he understood what we were going through and that he would help us no matter what. He truly cared about helping us, and he stuck with us through thick and thin. He did more than help us when he got us out of a horrible situation.

I am forever thankful to Judge Morrison for what he did for my sister and me, and am thankful to him that I can pursue a life I never would have gotten to have without him. I am currently doing very well in school and sports, and best of all I’m living with people who love me. I believe that Judge Morrison will continue to make a good judge because he listens and understands people’s situations and knows to do the right thing. I knew he would be just as good a judge as he is a man and I believe he always will be. If we were old enough to vote, we would be voting for Judge Morrison.

I think Judge Morrison makes a great judge because of the way he helped my brother and me. He was kind and caring about our situation. I felt like he knew what we were going through. If it wasn’t for Judge Morrison I wouldn’t be the person I am today. Now I have great grades, plenty of rest, a dog, and a wonderful warm house, and I never have to worry about if I’m going to have food to eat or worry about if I am going to be taken care of.

I know he is a great judge, and he will always be a great judge. He changed my life, and my brother’s life. Whenever we needed to talk to him, he was there to listen to us and help us if he could.

Subject: Judge Jim Morrison

I am sure that Jim has always considered me a liberal as I consider him a conservative. I was an educator for over 30 years. I have often worked with Jim on different committees which involved thoughtful discussions about education and the young people in our community. I find that our values and concerns are neither left nor right. Jim is interested in doing what is best for these people at an early age before they come into his courtroom in an adversary position. We need more judges working with the teachers, staff and parents if we are to improve our educational system and help our children.

I think Judge Morrison will continue to make an excellent judge if reelected to the Marinette County Circuit Court in April.

Re: Town of Stephenson Road Crew

Last week there was a Letter to the Editor of the Peshtigo Times referencing this subject by Supervisor Tom La Susa. I only had to check the first figures he quoted to find that he did not do a very good job of researching this subject. His first statistic was that Marinette County, who he is comparing the Town to, plows 340 miles of roads.

I talked to the County Road Commissioner, and he told me they plow 334 miles of county roads, plus 150 miles of state roads for a total of 484 miles of roads. It was stated that the Town of Stephenson has 220 miles of roads to plow ( the last I knew it was 207 miles but I’ll give him that). If the county has 15 trucks ( didn’t verify this) and the Town has 6 trucks, that is 32 miles/truck for the county and about 35 miles/truck for the Town.

The big difference is the County is held to a much higher standard than the Town because they are contracted with the Wisconsin Department of Transportation for the state roads. The state and county roads are more heavily traveled and must be scraped and salted much heavier than Town roads. They are also wider in many cases and have to have several passes to clear the entire width (particularly US41 and US141 and such roads as 64 and 8). This adds up to many more miles for the County trucks.

A few years back the Town sent out a questionnaire to the citizens for the “comprehensive planning” program. One question asked if the residents thought the Town should make changes with respect to how the roads were treated in the winter. The answer came back with overwhelming support for doing if just like it was being done. Now if THAT has changed in more recent times, I would suggest it is because the “road superintendent” is not getting the job done or the Town board is not giving the roads the oversight they need from management.

There are many reasons why the Town should not hire any more full time road crew worker. Anyone hired will join the union and the Town Board loses all control of that employee. Everything has to be arbitrated with the union. With full time employees, much of the snow plowing is done on overtime because we have to have the roads cleared for the school buses and many storms hit on weekends. Full-time employees get 40 hours in, plus overtime for coming in early, working late, or coming in on weekends. Part-time employees should get paid for the hours put in.

The biggest reason for NOT hiring any more full-time employees is, if we get enough full-time employees to plow the roads in the winter, we have to find “busy” work for them to do in the SUMMER. In the past the town has used them to build and repair roads. This is NOT profitable to the Town. The Town does not have the proper equipment to build and repair roads PROPERLY. Equipment such as big trucks, water truck, vibratory roller and excavator to name a few. Plus the Town needs COMPETENT operators for the equipment not just truck drivers.

We are better off to bid the road work out to contractors who will bring in the proper equipment and operators. The road superintendent and the Town Board should oversee the contractors work, I have gone around to road work that the Town crew has done and I have seen many shortcuts taken because they can and no one is overseeing them. I also have seen jobs where contractors took short cuts because the road superintendent didn’t over see the work.

I hope that you can tell from this letter that I am promoting a smaller government along with a smarter government with the people in charge doing their job.

As anyone knows, finding the right attorney for a long custody battle is never easy. The day we went to meet Judge Morrison there was no doubt in our minds that the was the right man for the battle. This was not going to be an easy task. We needed someone who was intelligent, dedicated, hardworking, and one that would not back down. After meeting with him we knew he was the attorney for us and we immediately retained him. He started working on our case and fought hard for over a year. When we would get discouraged and wanted to give up, it was him who kept us moving forward. Judge Morrison was not just our attorney but also a man who cared deeply about our case and the welfare of my child.

Judge Morrison is very professional, honest and fair. If we had any questions, he took the time to explain it. If we did not agree with something brought up or we wanted something he knew was not realistic, he wasn’t afraid to let us know. Judge Morrison is a straight shooter. He doesn’t mess around and gets right to the point (whether it is what you want to hear or not). Judge Morrison is very caring and compassionate. He understands his clients and is there with you until the end.

Judge Morrison has experience in all areas of law. We believe that he will continue to be an extraordinary judge with honesty, firmness and fairness at all times. We are confident that each individual that comes before him in court will be treated in that way. He would be an asset to Marinette County.
